For the strength of the side we put out. We should have done much better. Great start but we didn't kick on. Still we are through. Good to see both theo and Ozick back amongst it

16 teams left, 4 wins to retain the cup with only United & Liverpool possible strong contenders left. We gotta chase this like last year!

Absolutely. Would be beyond awesome to retain the cup. Should be top priority now IMO.

the more i hear about paulista, the less i am impressed. im worried that this is a signing we are making because we need to make a signing, rather than being a quality player who will make us stonger. And we seem all happy and fine with his paper work, however from the outside looking in, it doesnt look like we would have a shark show in hell of getting him a visa. Odd one this. It is clear that we need reinforcements, but im not sold on this kid...

3 Min Video:

Appears to be a bit like Koscielny, good in the air and quick.

Whoscored.com: http://www.whoscored.com/Players/76810/

He's averaged 7.14 this season, here's how our current defenders in the squad rank:

Debuchy - 7.30

Kosc - 7.25

Monreal - 7.15

Gibbs - 7.04

Chambers - 7.03

Bellerin - 7.01

Per - 6.96

It's not exactly science but I wouldn't write him off yet.

Will Real Madrid signing Silva & Odeegard could we see a last minute deal for Khedira or Illaramendi?

Let's hope we don't take them lightly. They're not a bad side.

Good draw, although clearly they are a decent side so we'll have to be on our game.

Henry reckons Paulista is a special talent.

That's enough for me ;)

Articles are appearing on the newsnow feed saying the work permit application has been successful. Arsene working his magic!

Stoked we've finally got a CB. Jury out on him at this stage obviously but we needed a body there badly, and we've got one.

Henry was saying that so the Visa would get approved lol

Eboue has been released by Galatasary, should we start #bringbackourboue?

That's almost ban worthy.

Paulista should be getting close:

I see there's talk that the media part (photoshoot, interview) has been done so it's just waiting on the editing guys. You know how slow the Arsenal IT guys seem to be though with signings often not confirmed for days after everywhere else says they are. This is how I imagine the arsenal.com IT guys:

And finally confirmed. Have to say I'm a little sceptical of Brazilian defenders but he sounds decent and plays where we desperately need someone. Welcome to the club and good luck.

does this dampen Arsene's enthusiasm for our Winston (soon to be anyones come summer)?

I don't think so. We're now officially up to 3 CB's, 2 full backs who can cover CB, and a 19 y/o utility who can play across the back line and is 'destined' for CDM.

Vs Tottenham with 10 defenders......

With Paulista over the line apparently we're eyeing up a 13.5m bid of Valencia's 19 Y/O left back, while we're also eyeing up the struggling for form Suarez.

Given Suarez hasn't completed a full season and Barcelona can't buy any players due to their ban I hardly think it would be a goer.

While I do like the idea of having someone younger to compete with Gibbs in the next season or two I think Monreal's battle with Gibbs for a starting spot isn't over any time soon. Or perhaps it's to replace Gibbs and his glass ankles!

I think our defence is sorted now in the short to mid term.

Kosc, Sack, Paulista and Chambers = 4 CBs

Debuchy, Bellerin, Monreal and Gibbs = 4 FBs

Plus Jenkinson on loan who I'm guessing will be sold.

Looks like Welbeck & the Ox are definitely out for the weekend, and Sanchez is a late call. Given it's against an out of sorts Villa and we're at home I'd suggest we rest Sanchez.

I would predict:

                   Ospina

Bellerin   Per   Kosc   Monreal

                   Coquellin

Walcott Ramsey Cazorla  Ozil

                  Giroud

Bench: Rosicky, Gibbs, Paulista, Szcy, Flamini, Chambers, Akpom

Injured: Sanchez, The Ox, Welbeck, Wilshere, Arteta, Gnabry, Debuchy, Diaby*

*Presuming Diaby is injured as per usual.

hope Rosicky plays

Ozil to have a blinder for sure

It's a good problem to have an in form Rosicky & Cazorla with a returning from injury Ramsey & Ozil battling over 3 spots.

Great game...could have even nabbed a few more.

Walcott , Ozil , Carzola and Ospina were quality.

Bring on Spuds next week!

True but geez, who do you leave out? To think that the Ox, Jack and Welbeck are out as well. Some nice selection problems when they come back into contention.

Welbeck no show for me given the other options

Coq

Ox - Ramsey - Carzola - Ozil

Giroud

Remains my preferred front 6

Jack can come in for Ramsey, Walcott wide or front, Rosicky to.

A plethora of good choices.
