Yes, we can be proud but also disappointed we didn't do better and should have. We have more at our disposal than some of the minnows who have surprised everyone. This I feel sits with NZF who should take some responsibility. When will we learn? You cannot blame the size of the population for lack of talent etc. Why then are we top in Rugby, Cycling, Rowing, Snowboarding etc this I feel goes back to how the governing board is managed. Bad managers produce bad/inefficient teams!!!

Rubbish. Do you own a passport? The last 3 sports are all a bit elitist, in that you pretty much need to be raised in a 1st world country, often needing wealthy parents to just participate. Hence there ain't no black African track cyclists, OIympic rowers or snowboarders. Rugby less so.

Football is the true world game, that can be played anywhere from a dusty street with rags rolled into a ball, to Old Trafford. Of course your population is a major factor, in how deep your player pool will be. But yes not the only factor as the likes of Uruguay, Iceland, Croatia have shown now & again.

Nigeria has a population of 224M. If even 0.01% of them played competitive football, that's still likely greater than the number of registered footballers in NZ. It's no surprise they are a team quickly on the rise in the Women's game.

I've spent a few months in Colombia at various times the last 5 odd years. They are football mad & there are 50M of them. There will be thousands of young fiesty girls now running around the barrios knocking over boys trying to be the next Linda Caicedo. Power to them.

Sure but when we didn't score a goal in 180 minutes against two teams we probably should have, then I'm not sure it's the keeper's fault. You could equally say Esson kept us ahead vs Norway with that superb tip on to the bar late on.

Oh I'm not blaming us getting dropped out on Esson and gave her heaps of credit in that first game.

Just every time I watch the replay of that goal it sucks extra bad.  We scored 1 goal in 3 games and conceded 1 goal in 3 games.  Between those 2 I am much more impressed by 1 stat.

as much as I'd love to think that football will over take rugby as the national sport I just don't see it happening. Rugby is just way too engrained and even with support waining it's not landing on football's side.

He was being sarcastic. NZF get some things wrong, they get some things right. But it's absurd to compare their success or failings to the administrators of niche sports like rowing, (indoor track) cycling & snowboarding. Pointless comparisons.

Would be interesting to see if the next squad was named building for the next World Cup that was under 30s. Or a version of this with 3 over age players like the men’s tournament is- u23 I think plus 3 overage players. Then after that look at integrating those who take their chances into the mix as we build for the Olympics next year. Doesn’t matter about results in the mean time, and they would probably be a stronger squad than that selected when covid restrictions were in place.

Having read through the last few pages here, some of us have been called out for being very pessimistic. I read that as caring more for our national teams and sport then NZF seems to at times.

When I fly to NZ, Canada, India, Russia, Latvia etc from the UK to watch our national teams play and then see NZF hire Jitka and Baze at the expense of better options, I wonder how much they really care about our teams, the game and it's fans.

Same applies to the mess they have made of the national League, sending domestic football backwards, again.

Totally agree, it is very disheartening. We saw what happened with the men’s U20 WC and again with the women now. NZF lacks vision or any plan, none that I has seen or read about and only looks to take the easy options. They should be taking the lead and not insulting us with these appointments, and yes there will be talk about not having money etc but as I said before we have managed it with other sports so why not football?

The genuinely need to disband it and form a new federation in wellington, it’s not working in Auckland. Too many incompetents. This isn’t a dig at Auckland, very much NZF. A fresh start.

Well there are changes, we have seen changes in how the whole thing is set up and organised, we have seen changes in structure, we have seen changes in regional structure and governance.
So what are peoples suggestions when multiple systems, methods etc over multiple decades with many many different sets of staff and leadership have us where we are now.  All I ever see are things such as NZF needs to go or the people there need to be replaced or the organisation needs to move city. However never any clear and coherent information about what is actually wrong and what can fix things. Remember this has been going on for more than 50 years, same basic complaint every year.

NZF is just the easy bogeyman when the truth is our country is an absolute minnow in the footballing world. A hard pill to swallow considering we big ourselves up so much off success in obscure colonial sports.

We may not have the Messi's of this world but we do have the talent in NZ. How we use that talent is the issue. We need people with the vision like Declan did with Ole' a few years ago to move NZ to the next level. Many of the minnow countries in this WC did not hire the multi million dollar coaches and they are competing with the top teams.

Teams through to the Last 16 at the WWC to date.
Switzerland, Spain, Japan, Norway, Netherlands, United States, England, Nigeria, Australia & Denmark

No minnows amongst that lot. Nigeria whipped us 3-0 back in April. Clearly on the rise & a better team than us.

Did NZ not lose to the Philippines? Are they a power house? Look at South Africa, Morocco, Zambia etc.  I was not talking about those who have qualified but those minnow teams who have performed well against top teams.

Yes but they have as a rule, done no better than the Ferns (1W, 1D, 1L GD 0), who missed out on the Last 16 on GD. NZ in a football sense (mens & womens) are a minnow.

Having said that I'd take a proven successful women's football coach like Stajčić in a heartbeat. Interesting to know what his salary was with the Philippines.

NZF have a track record of hiring the wrong person for the internation jobs, and screwing over the better candidates - just look at the way the men's coach process was "handled". As far as NZF and the nix being ingrained, that is a relatively recent rhing. In the previous 15 years NZF were almost intentionally unaware of the nix. Now however they seem to be keen to get involved in partnerships which result in better training facilities and better pathways for future players.

I dont recall ever saying NZF have appointed the best coaches for NZ teams although I thought Des Buckingham was first class and should have been given the job ahead of Danny Hay. I am not sure I understand your point about the Phoenix.
My point is that every year for the last 50 years of my recollections there has always been the same things said about the organisation of NZF but nobody ever really has a complete and coherent thought on how to fix it. Its always vague references to various things and 50 years of incompetence aimed at them despite 50 years of multiple regimes, staff, leaders, structures and directions. Just the same generalisations etc.  if its 50 years of different leaders, regimes, structures and staff being so hopeless I would suggest the NZ football community has a systemic issue. We are the problem.

Linked to the vacant Glory job.

Lets see how Klimkova goes with the Ferns at the Olympics, and is she prepared to ditch some of the older players. I think alot of them will want to hang in another 12 months until Paris. Not the most ugly/unexciting city to ever host an Olympiad.

and in 50 years have NZF taken any leaps and bounds. I will be the first to acknowledge I do not have all the answers but surely you would start with appointing the best coaches, setting some mandates for clubs to follow led by your national coaches. The central league quality has degrade over the last 2 years and we will see how the National league shapes up. It is not surprising many of our young talent tends to go to the US or Europe etc. We need to improve our local game or we will have nobody coming through, hence the same rut.

I hate to defend NZF at anytime, but what these ex-players seem to be asking for is not within NZF's control. AS discussed int he article, NZF get allocated a certain number of tickets by FIFA to give to dignitaries etc. If there wasnt enough freebies to give out to ex-players then good on them for buying there own.

I think we need more creativity in the midfield as well...I guess younger players coming through like Whinham and Pijnenburg may fill that space.  I just feel that overall it's an opportunity wasted...maybe some players should have been involved more.  It will interesting to see who is in the team for the Olympics next year because there is another chance to do something.

Yes, it was an opportunity to give some youngsters some experience as they will have no fear and would have run their legs off

And the men's version is Bazeley. Whilst I appreciate that the NZF need to cut their cloth accordingly, Really? Bazeley & Klimkova is the best they could come up with? In the latter case, I bet she bit their hand trying to grab that contract. Not even Fergusson could get a 6 year one at United. 6 years is unbelievable. I wouldn't mind except she proved beyond any doubt her lack of tactical awareness, no plan B and when given the opportunity to "blood" some of the young and up coming stars, she stuck with the "older" ones instead.

I said a few days ago the Swiss and Norwegians were poor and the round of 16 proved it. I'm sure the Ferns could have done better then the Swiss against Spain, conceding less goals although I very much doubt we'd have had any shots on goal.

Given that the Ferns are a shoe-in for every WWC which FIFA are now paying big dollars for and our men should be from the next WC, surely NZF should now be able to afford decent men's and women's coaches and not need to barrel scrap like they've done with Baze and Jitka.

Given that the Ferns are a shoe-in for every WWC which FIFA are now paying big dollars for and our men should be from the next WC, surely NZF should now be able to afford decent men's and women's coaches and not need to barrel scrap like they've done with Baze and Jitka.
