Seems to be some contradictions in there:

1) Talks about out incredible depth...but talks about Fallon being picked for his off-field ability. So clearly not enough depth to pick an entire 23 players based on their ability.

2) Talks about Peru being massive favourites and how the gulf is massive, but then says we don't see ourselves as underdogs.

Peru media reporting the 'it will be devastating for Peru' comments as headline stuff.

He's not taking a spot in the team. The 23rd man is never going to play and we have plenty of strikers.

Fallon makes more sense to me than Ingham, Colvey and Smeltz.

Which is exactly why he said.

Don't know why everyone is taking Hudson's recent media comments so seriously. Just mind games, 95% of which isn't aimed at the NZ public.

Players don't generally slag off their current coach to the media right before a massive game. This is just PR guff.

Also, good job Hudson introduced GPS and heart rate monitoring to the set up but that's an indictment of how backward we were, not a sign Hudson is a wonder coach. Any coach brought in to replace Ricki would have done the same thing.

The All Whites are also much better funded too. Remember Ricki was a part time coach, rumoured to be on about 50,000 per year. He mostly had one assistant coach, not three.

So you're saying #Martinin?

Hudson is a man ahead of his time. First he picked Moses Dyer and Alex Rufer when Rufer couldn't even make the bench for the Nix reserves and now he goes and includes a player who is basically semi retired for motivational purposes. This could catch on. At the next World Cup, I can see England including Bobby Charlton, Argentina will have Maradona and Brazil will include Pele in their 23 man squad.

07 Nov 06:39

Has anyone here attended / watched a training session?

How well are they run, what is the communication like... how taxing is it? With the All Whites training in Wellington now is a great time to go watch the man actually coach and manage. I watched Ricki and the All Whites in Dubai prior to the Bahrain game... and all he did was talk to his assistant about how hot it is and drink water while the players played small sided games for an hour before finishing with a shooting exercise practiced at every youth level, pass - lay off - smack the crap out of it.

Rory putting a wee elbow in on NZF here?

Doesn't sound like anyone gets along with Andy Martin.  He is a blight on the organisation.

He is but atleast Peter Taylor isn't going to be coaching following Hudson, well atleast I hope not!

This play-off will determine if Hudson is a tactical genius or just all talk as most here say he is (including myself). He has possibly the most talented group of players that are injury-free which is a luxury most AW coaches never had. The Peruvian coach has more experience with his team and tactics after a long qualifying process against some of the best teams in the world so it's clear who the tactical favorites are.

08 Nov 08:20

Any one know what actually happened to Taylor?

08 Nov 08:35

Smeltz looks like he has had a bit of work done on his Thailand trip. I wonder if Botox was part of the contract...

I think credit had to be given to Anthony Hudson for the performance and result yesterday. We were miles anyway of 4 years ago.

I thought we were well structured, had a clear gameplan and executed well for the most part. One game away from the World Cup, and yesterday gave me belief we can do it

I've bagged the shark out of Hudson but I have to say he did one hell of a job getting us to this point. I still think he's made plenty of mistakes in his reign but he's come right just as it matters most. Ever since we knew OFC would play CONMEBOL I've been predicting that we would get trounced so to go into the second leg still very much alive is amazing for me.

12 Nov 01:53

Yeah I agree. I gave him rope early on but it ran out and I honestly through with the players he was picking, we would get hammered come this tie based on the depth he was trying to create (Dyer, Brotherton, Patterson etc) The team yesterday were in the game for parts of it which was not expected. We looked very structured, organised and hard to break down. I didn’t recall anyone getting caught out of position and we maybe had to scramble 3/4 times which is less than we have previous against opposition of this type. Peru look technically good but I think Hudson can proudly feather that game in his cap. I guess the only negative I would say is that why could he not have been like this the whole time he has been here?

I give him credit for the tactics and the overall performance for this game. I thought 90% of the other games where pretty bad.

Something that I noticed towards the end of the game was when  play was stopped and Reid was on the sideline having a drink, Hudson was behind him talking to him, and  Reid completely ignored him.

Or maybe he was just listening to him? The playing group like Hudson.

My 10 cents - I still think he is a self-serving wanker but our players are awesome and I love football in NZ. Hard to play as team when we have so little time together but that guy just gives me the s hits. Could be just me but...

Rory is really the coach

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

12 Nov 08:54

We did brilliantly - not only did our best player not start, but Reid and Smith were both coming in off injuries and short of an extended run. There were more things against us than for us and we came up trumps.

Hudson got pretty much everything right last night. He has said during his entire time as coach that this has been what he has been working towards and it showed.

Even if we lose we can move forward with confidence in the players even if the coaching set up changes.

If so, then CHRIST is really the coach

I'm not his biggest fan, but I would actually use his own words here - in the press conference after the game he said "we haven't achieved anything yet" which I liked

If we qualify on Thursday then yes give him all the credit he will deserve, but lets wait till then before we do

The way he played the Chris Wood situation with the closed trainings and bringing him out for the Friday press conference (Wood wasn't obliged to be there, he brought him out as if to say "this guy is our key player tomorrow) was a masterstroke.

Maybe, come to think of it, Hudson is a machiavellian genius and the last three years, Moses Dyer, shark tactics against the Islands, Winston always being injured, the feud with Smith, calling up Fallon, ignoring Brockie, is a giant ruse and he's going to show his hand on Thursday and we'll blow Peru away!

Completely agree with this. Everyone was anticipating Wood to start, not even the slightest rumour throughout the week suggested otherwise. For sure he caught Peru off guard, he caught us off guard and that was massive. The confusion going through Gareca's head just over an hour out must of been huge because no doubt Wood was the main topic of their team discussions and planning in the lead up.

Also hilarious looking back at the disgruntled media's comments about Hudson and NZF not allowing media at their sessions. Justified?

13 Nov 04:50

Wood not starting reminded me of Dipak Patel opening the bowling and Greatbatch's pinch hitting. And if we've got the jump on them tactically once, then they have to be wondering what else we might have up our sleeves
