In fact, they're so scared that they started the Confeds Cup game against us with their reserve line-up. And when that didn't quite work in the first half, they made a couple of subs and a small tactical switch, and casually arse raped us for 45 minutes.

Somehow I don't think they'd be quaking in their boots.

He's not saying the Mexicans would be scared of us, he's just saying that we would be better placed to be competitive as opposed to the shambles of 2013. Any fool can see that.

Sure they weren't at full strength, but we got under their skin and they didn't like it. They were hardly at full strength on paper in 2013 either - playing only domestic players based on their coach's club team, but still spanked us.

The defending by the AWs at the start of that Japan in 2024 was comical. Then from my memory Emblem's young team, did come back and Wood scored 2 really nice goals.

However the Japanese undoubtedly eased off after being 4-0 up in about 15 minutes. They also made 4 changes at halftime, so that would have disrupted their flow. It really was just a training run for them, as they were preparing for Brazil 2014. They had a few more good chances though, and it could have easily been say 6-2 or 6-3.

Expect a much much tighter game Friday night, esp with Reid at the back

main thing that stands out for me is a coherent, positive game plan from the AWs (who were undone by a green back four who made some shocking early errors)

After not firing a shot against Russia they were out to make a statement. Also fed up with Mexicans injury faking from previous games. I'd rather see AWs bring some niggle/mongrel within limits, and mixed with skill. Let the opposition know they are there, rather than meekly being bystanders. If they don't turn with some attitude against 5th SA side, and try put them off their game they will get fudgeed over. Fine balance of course, any red cards would be terminal.

Agree to a point - but they benefited from Nippon not taking the game that seriously after being 4-0 up within 15 mins. Still was some promising signs yes at the attacking end.

In reality the only bitching and moaning you really hear about Hudson is on this forum and from a select few. I've never heard the same level of vitriol out in the real world. All reports we hear from players are that Hudson is a good coach and they all seem to respect him [I know the critics will say that the players will obviously say that] you'd expect some leaks from the camp if they thought he was a cock.

Exactly. Hudson can never get a break - if he does something one way he gets hurled abuse, if he does it the other he gets hurled abuse. Theres no doubt the All Whites quality and depth has improved IMO.

Its almost laughable how knowledgeable some of the people on this forum think they are. There could be many reasons why Gleeson and Boyd don't get a look in; like heck Boyd had personal, childish issues at the Nix and Gleeson got a drink driving conviction. Its called professionalism. Had Ingham turned up fit he would've stayed, instead he was unprofessional. Maybe these are the personalities Hudson doesn't want in his team, which is completely understandable. This is a national team, one who is potentially facing Argentina in a month. A certain level of professionalism is 100% needed. If you think Hudson shouldn't exclude players who are unfit then you must be having a laugh. Feel free to criticise but not to the extent that the playoff becomes treaded and fearful, as you have done already, but make it optimistic and hopeful. Also when Reid and Thomas, two of our three top players, come out and say how much Hudson has improved the squad and culture then you have to respect that and show support. Rather than constantly being negative and appearing as little children whining cause they didn't get their toys.

This is my point. A couple people think there too big for their boots because their "heavily invested in football" and let everyone know in an online forum. As soon as someone says something in a positive light about Hudson or the team it gets shot down.

I think it's a sentiment that's widespread throughout the country's football community.

Yes Hudsons 'exaggerations' re team performance can be annoying. Feel he does that as a mixture of talking himself up for prospective future employers, but also in a bid to fill his players with self belief that they can match it with the bigger teams. A bit of hyperbole from your coach doesn't go astray when you are a A League plodder about to face off against Messi or Sanchez or whoever.

Overall AWs are in a far better position than same stage in 2013. That's mixture of work done by Emblem, Hudson and his team, plus guys like Wood and Thomas being on the ascent with their club careers.

Get behind the team.

I wasn't talking about anyone in general. More that, people who spend time on forums, tend to follow quite closely whatever the topic of that forum is. More likely to listen to interviews and read articles etc. So it wouldn't be surprisingly if the views of those people differ from more casual followers.

04 Oct 23:22

Criticising Hudson does not mean that you are not 100% behind the team. However......

Coaches stand and fall by their results. In Hudsons era with the AW,s, the team has only won ONE game against non PI sides....thats ONE win. Plus against non PI sides the loss percentage is 66%. Most coaches at any level would have been sacked with a 66% loss percentage.

I don't really care about Hudsons choice of tactics or players...its his call. He will live or die on his calls. But talk about the AW's progressing are bollocks. We were very very poor for nearly all of the recent Europe tour(apart from half an hour against Mexico B).....managing only one goal.....despite having an EPL striker and two wingers at good Dutch Div 1 sides.

We should be doing a lot better.

04 Oct 23:23

Why would you hate a football coaching regime. What a waste of energy.

Yes agree AWs were not that great on Europe tour incl Confeds Cup. However saying we should do better because we have an EPL player and two wingers in Everdisvie  (spp) is completely pointless.

It pays no respect at all to opposition. Nth Ireland team were littered with EPL and Championship players. Let's not even start on names of clubs Portugal team come from. Sure we have 4-5 guys playing at a quality level in Europe, but we have far more players playing in lower quality leagues, and it's not futsal World Cup qualifying!

... more seriously, the question of "is Anfony the kind of person I would piss on if he were on fire" is different from the question " is Anfony doing enough with the AWs". You can say NO to question 1 but YES, MORE OR LESS to question 2.

Winston Reid being interview by NZF's media attache, definitely where I'm expecting a realistic assessment of where the team is at.

My favourite sauce for the good oil on Hudson, was bloke on here who attended a Mother's group morning tea, that incl a player's wife!!

Hope I have that right. Word was that AH was rated by the players. NZF spin doctors would be doing well to infiltrate a Mother's group.

All accounts suggest in terms of training pitch and the team environment he has brought a new level of professionalism. No one quibbles with that. But that's not the entirety of his role.

I think this was me, but the facts got a little muddled. I work with a wag, and she tells me her husbands opinions (among other things) at morning tea time!

S/he speaks a lot more highly of Hudson than he ever did of Merrick.

So if I say that I know Hudsons dog and he says that Hudson is a good bloke because I happen to have taken the ball and thrown it once at a beach one time with the dog, is that proof that its a good source?

Without anyone wanting to commit their actual name to anything on these forums, everything is pretty much hearsay because there is no proof. For the example, how can you take Nelfoos as gospel when no one knows who he is, where he works or who he works with? I'm not calling him a liar but its not concrete. For all I know Austin11 could be Bill Tuiloma! I have no idea. I think I have seen a couple of posters that do post under their name and then a smattering that don't hide there names (most of moderators)

Just because someone says something and that they know someone, does not make it gospel.

That's fair, and its perfectly reasonable to be skeptical. My profile is linked to my twitter, so depending on the strength of your google-fu you can probably find out where I work and who else works here, but I'm not willing to do that heavy lifting for anyone else.

If someone does figure it out I'm sure she would prefer to remain anonymous so please don't trumpet who it is all over the forums, or else I might lose my source!

Additionally, anything I am being told is only getting on the forums 3rd hand, so take ebverything with a grain of salt. I never asked anyone to take my word as gospel.

Sort it out. If Winston didn't truly rate Anfony, he would have another "surprise ankle injury" every time a game came around, like Ryan Nelsen for so many years. The assumption that anyone who says something which you disagree with is lying is how you get a partisan bubble.

38 new posts on this thread over a day and only one for the Japanese game.

I can only assume by some of the comments that Hudsons wiki project has now been completed.

Now he and his NZ football employees have suddenly overnight started improving his profile on this website by spreading misinformation.

If Hudson was in a country that cared about its football team he would have been chewed up long ago. He's been half arsed. Some terrible results, and some decent returns outside serious tournament games. We haven't  been eliminated from the WC yet.

But let's not pretend that he's as of yet done anything worthy of kudos. And he's talked a lot of crap. The Japan game is going to be a good test.
