Thing is Reid, Wood and Thomas, with Marco and Kosta perhaps knocking on the door, make this a generation with whom we should be achieving things.
Hudson's legacy may be with players like Musa, Lewis, Tuiloma and others that he seems to have helped to get gigs. Oh and especially the Ingham's and Dyer.
Herbert's team had a confidence and desire, and with players like Nelsen, Sigmund, Brown, Fallon and others didn't apologise for playing football in NZ. And Smeltz, Reid, Elliot, Wood, Leo, McG and ok ok Lochie too made sure the end results weren't too bad either.
We've got some quality, but have we got the spirit and determination as a team? I think that could come from players like Musa, Themi, Tuiloma and so on. We need that depth of determination. Musa has stuck at his job in the USA and is making some progress.
'Achieve' what exactly? About the only measurable achievements we can currently expect from the AWs are winning OFC Nations Cup, and qualifying for intercontinental playoffs. Hudson has managed both - the former without Reid and Thomas, and with a large dollop of luck.
To me it's a myth that we currently have a 'golden generation'. Reid is proven top drawer class, plus Wood and Thomas may get there. However too many of the other AWs players come from weak leagues (by an international standard) like USL and A League. Sure we have a lot more players in Europe and as pros in general, compared to even 10 years ago - but so now do most nations - given the continued cosmopolitan nature of the big leagues.
Japan for example until recently had nearly all their players in the J League, now they have a large presence in the European big leagues. We may have got stronger, but so has everyone else. As a wild guess only Reid, Wood and Thomas would go close to making the Blue Samurai squad.
A creditable fighting showing in the two SA playoff games and I'll give Hudson a pass mark, based as much on him giving a few young players a go, and increasing the overall player depth. The next coach will inherit a pretty sound setup, compared to the post Mexico mess of 2013.
