On the ad: I reckon cliche but it doesn't offend/bother me.

For myself, its just the usual pattern that nz advertisers do, and Im wondering if the NZRFU maybe paying for

rugby references in these ads?  Look at tvnz news, they seem to throw in a union reference into non rugby stories

when its not even needed.

Went with State last week.  Was probably ripped off.  But at least they're not anti-football rugbyhead mongs.

Sure its just a commerical, but advertisers here have a history in their ads of taking cheap shots at sports that anit

union, while praising rugby union, (no matter what product) they're advertising.

Remember that government ad to get people to pay child support, they showed a kid who couldnt play soccer, because his

parents didnt pay the fees, NZsoccer complained. They will use other sports in a negative way, but they wont do this with Union.

As an opposing point, this ad would be front page of the Herald and Stuff with outrage if the guy had said:

"Play Rugby? Don't be foolish, he was not a homo. He played football"

What a stupid example, that's just a blatant homophobic slur. You could insert any two sports in to that sentence and people would be equally outraged.

It annoys me but only a little. Having said that, isn't all sports fandom just people getting worked up about something which is effectively meaningless? Or more specifically, isn't all the meaning that there is in sport something that exists only insofar as you let it exist? Plenty of people don't like any sports and would say that the amount of time and money and energy we all put into something which ultimately has no tangible impact on the quality of our lives is petty and stupid too.

I say that if I get the chance to be indignant about the rugby v football thing then I'll damn well get indignant about it, if only because indignation is kinda fun.

All I know is that if you like soccer, then you're one of the bad ones...an un-New Zealander even...

haha, as I said before the reason i complained is because its not a one off.

Government run ads, always seem to use football in a negative way, eg: The 

dad who wont pay childsupport,  so his kid isnt allowed to play soccer, Another  dad who speeds and puts his kid life at

risk after soccer practice, but when they  use Union in a drink driving ad, its a postive, "If you

drink and DONT drive, your a bloody legend"

Businesses in ads  do this too, AMP werent the first. 

This ad really is crap and deserves everything it gets from "Banzai" in his humorous lampoons above - I see it as a fossil of the old "you have to like rugby to be a real Kiwi" mentality.
