To be fair, IF the reported add ons are all but guaranteed to eventuate, it's a good deal for the club. 4 million NZD.

Holy shark!  What are the add ons?  Like play a certain number of games and we get more?

Im guessing, but youd expect something like a number of games, plus maybe even a number of clean sheets, could even be bonuses paid if he gets an international call up - all things are on the table, it just depends on how good the negotiators are.

Queenslander 3x a year.

I wonder about the international call up one. Isn’t it often a bone of contention releasing players for internationals? Particularly useless friendlies?

One thing I’m interested in is what sort of salary a guy like him would likely be signing onto. I’ve always wonfered but you don’t see much data about it other than the top players. I mean it’s fair enough. You’d think footballers would want that private especially if there’s a high chance of long lost relatives coming out of the woodwork needing cash.

Spying on the Bournemouth forum, they seem slightly hopeful about him. They're mainly just complaining that their current keepers aren't good enough lol
01 Jun 00:18 · edited 01 Jun 00:19 · History
Obviously sometimes the source can be a little off, but looking at the usual websites for premiership salaries, the top two keepers look to be earning around 50k and 20k respectively, which sounds about right for a club of this size in the premiership.

Obviously Alex will be a bit below that but assuming he’s on 10000 pounds a week, that’s decent coin for a young guy

Auckland will rise once more

01 Jun 00:24
To echo what most have said here, for such a young guy who was clearly doing enough to be on the radar of some very big clubs the money does seem a little shy. Hopefully the add ons are realistic and there's a good sell on clause in there.
Huge for Alex though, just have to hope the discussion has been had about where they seem him fitting in because the last thing you want is to see him watching from the sidelines.
Good luck to the lad

Spending a year on the pine at an EPL for a season at age 21, wouldn't be a bad thing. Going to world class training seassions each day, being around top players, travelling to some of the world's most famous stadiums every 2nd week.

But yeah I'd keep an eye on any annoucements out of Hibs re what keepers they sign or don't. He ain't coming back to the ALM with Auckland FC. Makes zero sense, and as others have said Nix probably put a clause in the contract to stop it from happening anyway.

23 yr old Gauci signed for Villa in January, then sat on the bench for 5 EPL games. Be interesting to see if he goes out on loan somewhere next.

would they count, considering he only played for those clubs because of the MoU between them and the Nix?

Onehunga/AU will be stoked, big payday in line for them

I doubt the Nix would care much about Paulsen turning out for Auckland FC if they could secure a $4,000,000 transfer. It's big money for a small A-league team. Would be crazy to reject it.

Well done to Paulsen, btw. Incredibly well deserved. I will not 'boo' him if he turns out for Auckland in a loan spell.

I didn’t realise we got so much for Cacace. Is that the transfer to St Truiden alone or does that include payment from their subsequent sale to Empoli?

Just the transfer to Sint Truiden. He went to Empoli for €3m but I’m not sure how much of that we got.

How likely is it that Paulsen makes appearances or even bench appearances for Bournemouth during his three year contract? Because surely he will need to make a significant number of them for the add-ons to be paid.

The add ons could be anything. From something as simple as 1 League appearance or the ridiculous like Bournemouth winning the Premier League that season (Blackburn Rovers got stung by putting that in Phil Jones' move to Man United).

Maybe, I’m not sure what they were doing with their club contract arrangements then. Maybe the nix had it covered

Paulsen is on a high. An EPL club at age 21. Now you going to tell him he has to continue to play in the ALM, and for a club he has no attachment to. Way to burst his bubble.

He's off to Hibs (watch if they sign any new keepers next few weeks), or a few months at Bournemouth soaking in the whole Premier League being in the UK thing, and then a loan deal to a club somewhere lower in the English football pyramid.

Or who knows maybe like Gauci at Villa, within a short time he's Cherries reserve keeper on the bench for EPL games! We are just guessing.

Hopefully he's still good to go for the Olympics. Suspect he'll be fine, but Bayern stopped Singh playing in Tokyo.

01 Jun 07:37
Maybe as well with the fee not being that high we have a good sell on clause. A good example of that is the Ecuador club that made 22 mil from the Caciedo transfer to Chelsea. If Paulsen ever becomes starting quality for Bournemouth and plays well the transfer value for prem proven players gets super inflated. So we could down the line be getting a hefty sum.
01 Jun 08:11
Paulsen could go straight in as #3 in the Cherries GK pecking order.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/football/wellington-phoenix/wellington-phoenix-goalkeeper-alex-paulsen-moving-to-english-premier-league-club-bournemouth/5OIBVWFOINA2BAWU22IU4EWY34/

One scenario could see Paulsen complete pre-season with the Cherries before they decide if they want to send him on loan to continue his development or stay within their environment.

Brazilian Neto was their main custodian last season, with 32 EPL appearances, with young Irishman Mark Travers (four games) and Romanian Andrei Radu (two matches) also being used.

Radu has since returned to parent club Inter Milan while another keeper, former West Ham and Middlesborough stopper Darren Randolph, is also out of contract.

The other thing is that the Foley group also get a close look at any players out of the Nix academy and the rest of NZ, ahead of other Northern hemisphere clubs.
And with Paulsen we’ve seen the results. No messing around.

I genuinely think Alex is the best of the three at the point of leaving the Nix for pastures green.

Given his transfer is the most recent, he should have commanded the highest transfer value, especially given monetary inflation caused by COVID following Libby's move to Belgium.

It’s not real….

Three for me, and two for them.

Bournemouth are heading to LA on the 15th of July for a two week training camp and two preseason games (opponents not yet named).

Does this conflict with any All Whites commitments? As obviously Alex should be on this trip

OFC Nations Cup is 15th - 30th June.
Football Olympics 24th July - 10th August.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/articles/cy9xd73gq5eo#:~:text=Bournemouth%20will%20be%20heading%20to,League%20Soccer%20team%20LA%20Galaxy.

I wouldn't think Cherries would stop Paulsen from going to the Olympics, but Bayern did with Singh in 2021 (Tokyo).

Wouldn't be great PR move re Foley's reputation with NZ football fans, if Alex was unavailable for France. Not that he likely gets much involved with those sorts of micro decisions at Bournemouth

isnt there a rule in place which says the loaned players salary comes out of your cap? If that's still then premier League wages would hurt.
02 Jun 06:43 · edited 02 Jun 06:45 · History
A league memo in April 2016 explicitly cited a review of Caceres’ transfer as the reason for an update to the Player Contract Regulations, introducing a rule that meant loans between sister clubs back to the A-League would not be allowed for two transfer windows after the initial move.
https://aleagues.com.au/news/a-league-transfers-news-sydney-fc-melbourne-city-tickets-details-latest-caceres/

So unless things have changed, the Caceres rule should still be in place. But is Auckland classified as a Sister club?

There was also rules with regards to how loans are included in the cap, after Tom Rogic/Victory rorted the cap. Can't recall them exactly atm.

If he goes to Bournemouth for that amount it's a steal by them. In a day when very average EPL players go for $20 Million +, a $1 Million deal is lunch change. Sorry But I think it sucks.

In my scenario, he should choose to stay here for 1 more season to show consistency. We know he has the ability for sure. But another season would not hurt a 21 year old Goalkeeper. That there is a big chance Bournemouth might loan him back to Auckland - their buddy club - irks. They could have done a deal like Irankunda. Loaned him back to the Nix.

Alex is a very mature feet firmly on the ground person, with a desire to always improve. I am really rapt for him.

As for the contract, the Nix should slip in a 20% future transfer clause, because I hardly think that Bournemouth is where he will see out his career. The BIG fish will notice him and he will command a very big transfer fee.  They could also slip in the "He cant play against us clause" into the transfer agreement too. Stopping other A League teams playing him against us should he be loaned out to any of them.

Just a few thoughts.
