But to where? If they are not breaking in at Championship teams, the only way for them to go is lower levels....

Would that be so bad... to drop a level down if it means regular playing time?

Well I guess playing is better than not playing but whats the difference in Championship and Div 1/2?

Both of them should be doing that now.  No senior game time at all looks bad.  Plenty of L1 & 2 teams have youth loans from Championship Clubs, plus there are many playing in the Conference.  Really needs to be playing somewhere and not just the youth league which from what I saw at Watford the other day is no better then Northern League footie.

Looks like team is going to get promoted, so what next for him? a loan deal? sometthing needs to happen to get some real game time.

This is the question. He is, like Payne, spinning wheels. He needs something a bit more substantial. He has had a good base to start from but he needs to launch himself from that. It wont happen player reserves

I think the nix should look at him. He is in a posi which we are not strong, he is young and I think has shown some good potsnetial with the all whites. I can't see him getting any first team action with burley and even when he dropped down to league one on loan last season, he didn't see any time.

would be a great signing for us, but do hope he can break into the first team

Nix have Ifill's & possibly Huysegems' wages available from next seasons salary cap. We could try to lure them both Payne and Howieson back with decent paychecks.

I think Ifill will still  be here next season.  I also do not think you'll need to offer that much to either of them as I think they will be willing to get their careers moving forward; a similar situation to Alan Pearce and Jeremy Christie about 11/12 years ago as their time with Barnsley was coming to an end.

Burnley could well get promoted back into the EPL.  The side is playing well and Cam will have few chances this season and none at all next season in the first team I'd say.

Also my English colleges at British Airways (Watford, QPR and Middlesbrough fans) were teasing me that NZ is so bad that we are playing academy players who aren't even bench warmers in the lower divisions.  I didn't have much of a comeback to that as I kind of grudgingly agree.

I've asked David Dome and Chris Greenacre about the possibility of signing Howieson and Payne - both were aware of their situations (both out of contract end of season I think) but made noises about it being up to Ernie and whether or not they wanted to give up on England just yet

Bearing in mind they both play in central midfield and that we have muscat, lia and Reira already I think one of the two would be sufficient. The question is if you had a choice who would it be? I prefer Howieson myself

I'd prefer Payne. I think he's more versatile and would be a better backup at DM for Riera than Howieson or anyone in our squad currently. But I'll admit that all I've seen of both of them are games for NZ so not much really at all

Isn't Howieson more of a front third player whereas Payne sits deeper?

You would think given their ages they would more be head to head with Ridenton and Rufer in our squad rather than Lia/Muscat/Riera.

Dont really know what age has to do with it. They are head to head with people playing the same/similar positions, not the same age.

If you look at the youngest All Whites, they are: Bill Tuiloma, Storm Roux, Cam Howieson, Marco Rojas, Ryan Thomas, Chris Wood, Tim Payne and Tyler Boyd.

The Phoenix should be trying to sign any of these guys if available, and obviously the likes of Rojas, Thomas, Wood and Tuiloma aren't.

That's a great question. I think Payne has been moved further back the pitch from the front 3rd. That would show versatility. Is he successful in being versatile? Not sure.

I'm not sure if I prefer one over the other. Have not seen enough nor have enough information to make and informed choice.

Payne would fit into our midfield rather well, as I think he could play all the roles (Riera, Lia, Kenny) pretty well. Howieson maybe could play the Kenny role?

there is the distinct possibility that Chris Wood, Cameron and even Tommy Smith will be in the premiership next season - for even the scrappiest chance surely it would be better to stay at a club in the EPL???

As I understand it his deal with Burnley finishes at the end of the season. I guess he will know very soon if he has a future with them.

To explain my point further... Riera/Muscat/Lia start because they are more experienced and game-wise. I'd hazard a guess that Ridenton/Rufer probably have technically better feet than all of them, but aren't yet up to starting day in day out in the A League. Hence I'd also guess that if signed, Payne/Howieson would be competing with Ridenton/Rufer (and perhaps Hicks) for squad spots until they're able to usurp one of the experienced trio.

That's kinda how I thought it would be. I wonder how they are skill wise head to head. My gut tells me that Payne is the better player based only on AW cameos.

I'd pick Howieson, I just think Payne was better liked by Ricki.

Also, he plays deeper where we are weaker and Howieson plays further up where we are stronger.

Howieson was our best player at the u20 wc. He also played as a DM (we played with 2) then and looked a lot sharper than Payne.

IIRC Payne did a pretty good job of being a DM at the Olympics. Hasn't he also played as an AM and a winger before? (although maybe not for the AWs)

He's part of the Development Squad not the First Team Squad so I doubt he's going to get any time playing EPL unless they have a lot of injuries.

Stretching it a bit.  Played 2nd half v Accrington in late July when Clarets played a completely different team in each half and lots of development squad players.  Did not feature in the first team squad in the 'big' pre-season games against Celta Vigo & Verona.  Nor, in earlier friendlies against Preston & Blackpool (after Accrington).  Has a squad number, but unlikely to be featuring much, if at all, in first team this year.

Correct (well, 2 & 1/2).  But not featured in any of the last 4 friendlies (which have had much more first team focus).  I know and follow the club closely.  There are a few supporters that would like to see Cam given more of a chance, and the club believes he has potential - hence giving him an extension, rather than sending him to the scrap-heap.  However, realistically his first team chances are limited this season. A loan would be a good move.
