Bolton are currently in League 1 - 3rd tier in England so not really much of a step up

Big step up.  Scottish Premiership players constantly end up in England's League Two and many struggle to make it successfully.  My club "The Argyle" have a number of ex Scottish prems in L2 for this exact reason.

That's rubbish - most Scots players end up in the Championship, this season there are 23 in the Premier League, 30 in the Championship, 21 in League 1 & 15 in League 2.

The reason your team "The Argyle" has a few is probably more to do with the fact your manager is Scottish

Didn't feature on the pitch or the subs bench for Bolton's match v Burnley this morning, so presume his trial hasn't gone well

Not disagreing with that but they are the pick of the bunch, you've mentioned there from the top of the Scottish Prem. A number of them also worked their way up from the lower English Leagues after heading south of the border. Have a look at the numbers in Leagues One and Two.

If he came home to New Zealand and was a star in the ASB Premiership he would get back in the All Whites. Clayton Lewis and Moses Dyer prove this. So clearly he'd rather be a personal trainer than come back to the national league ...what does that tell you

That he has roots in the community where he effectively has grown up and doesn't want to uproot and come back here?

Isn't he going out with that lovely kiwi lass who plays for Everton?

We need a second NZ franchise in the A League...

I don't know if it would make too much of a difference, but I do wonder what would have happened if Payne stayed in NZ within a setup like the NIX?

Unfortunately sad fact is very few people who show promise at age group level go on to make a success of being a fulltime pro.

I believe that it is a new bird, and no longer Everton Ladies player Laura Merrin

Bang on. NZF and Auck City should have this in their 5 year plan. They should have a bid ready when the next TV deal comes up. I know I've heard Auck City talk about it but haven't any more than that.

It would increase our players in a professional set up by 25% overnight.

The best way of thinking about it is NZF must be duplicating resources and cost that would be required by a new franchise. So they should be able to underwrite this cost as they're already spending it. Think of the money they are spending on development and replicating the academy set ups. Maybe NZF go - ok let's divert some of those dollars into a Auckland franchise and take costs out of their federation and talent centres and rely on the clubs to do it. Obviously am thinking out loud but it's the principle - NZF know their finances better than anyone. But one way to grow is to look at synergies and there should be heaps here...

Payne or Howieson

I never rated Howieson... touch was too poor.

Payne I thought looked good as an attacker at youth level, but seemed lost as a DM, tried playing the hard man role and forgot how to play.

So he's only a year older than Ridenton and Rufer and a couple of years younger than Fenton. Absolutely no reason why he couldn't make a come back in his career and push for a new pro-contract.

Didn't realise how young he was. Wish him all the best.

Know he's back in NZ for Team Wellington, but how's he been going?

He's not been a standout at all. There are players playing for the Weenix who are making heaps more of an impact on matches than Howieson is.

I'm not entirely sure. It may be because there are other players around him influencing games more than he is, kind of how Wee Mac seems to go missing entirely in games when he's still actually doing stuff.

I'd expect him to have been able to boss the WeeNix kids around the field though and he wasn't able to do that, so maybe it does come down to the overall quality of the SSP given the WeeNix are about the median team of the league.

The big difference with the Weenix this season is that they haven't been bossed around by other teams that they had been in the last 2 seasons

Cam Howieson has been OK, but as you say he hasn't been a standout

Off to Vanuatu with the AWs, a short break, then AFC pre season training starting out at Albany in July apparently.

So they must plan to have announced all their rumoured 15 current signings by then
