Aqui, vamos. Espanol 1.0 with Finn Surman.

Quick count is 13 Spanish speaking (central/sth american) guys in Portland's 1st team squad. Plus 1 each from Portugal & Brazil.

Native English speakers in the minority. So yeah will help Surman to learn at least some basic Espanol.

Portland truck on, unbeaten in 5 games now. A 4-2 win in Kansas. Was 2-2 at HT.
Full game Surman. Flashscore gives him a solid 7.3 rating.

He seems to be doing bloody well so far. Keeping a very experienced CB like Župarić on the bench.

And in the highlights below, oh so close to scoring 2nd phase from a corner. But him being there leads to SKC defender putting the ball in his own net for the oggie. Seems destined to be denied scoring goals by OGs (remembering that VUC game in the wet)

Niche Cache. Good vibes.

Phil Neville: “He has owned it. For us he’s still a kid, a baby, he’s in his first season. He’s been outstanding so far this season and every little test that’s been put in front of him, he’s risen to the challenge and this is another test for him. Playing against maybe Giroud, a World Cup winner, obviously got Bouanga in there. They’ve got great attacking talent and it’s another test he’s got to rise to.

The kid just never wants to stop learning. Him and Liam Ridgewell and Ian Smith had a meeting yesterday in my office because there was not much space anywhere else and they were literally in there for an hour. They want to learn, they want to review, they want to see the opposition they’re playing against. I think with players like that who have that growth mentality, they definitively have a big future.”

Surman was indeed up against Olivier Giroud as Portland hosted LAFC in what ended up being a bonkers game of football. LAFC thought they’d scored after 75 seconds when Denis Bouanga ran through but he was called back for offside. Instead Portland scored an early penalty via Felipe Mora and then were 2-0 up after 42 mins when Santiago Moreno struck. In between, Bouanga had another goal disallowed for offside... but Olivier Giroud scored from a direct free kick, in off the crossbar, to make it 2-1 at half-time. Ryan Hollingshead hit the post for LAFC before Bouanga later set up David Martinez for a 64th min tap-in. Mora restored Portland’s lead on 66’, only for Bouanga to score from the penalty spot right at the end for a 3-3 draw. Portland still nearly won it when they hit the post from a free kick but nah bro, didn’t happen for them.

LAFC seemed capable of tearing through the Timbers midfield at will so Surman was constantly getting turned around having to deal with the pace of Bouanga and the physicality of Giroud. About as tough a test as he’s faced in MLS so far. Plenty to learn from that bout but once again he emerged with reputation unscathed. Still blocked a couple shots. Still made a couple interceptions. Still leads the entire MLS for defensive clearances. You get the feeling it won’t be long before he scores a goal either... Portland are definitely keen on getting his heading ability up there at set piece time. The Timbers are currently on a six-game unbeaten streak.

That’s impressive stuff for your first few games of your first season.

Another start for Surman (RCB). Portland would go 2nd in the Western Conference with a win.

Edit - Timbers up 1-0 at HT.

Plenty of goals in this one.

Portland go 3-0 up by 63 mins. The Galaxy quickly claw 2 goals back to have it 3-2 at 67 mins. But a 4th goal Timbers goal in the 78th min seems to have killed off the game.

36 yr old Japanese defender Maya Yoshida off the pine for Galaxy. Yoshida
7 EPL seasons with Southampton plus 126 caps for Japan. Many alongside Sakai. Matched up against Wood at the Tokyo Olympics in our QF, as an o/a centre back.

Edit - finishes as a 4-2 win for Portland who go 2nd in the West. Full game Surman. Flashscore gives him a 6.6. Unsurpisingly the attacking players topped the ratings.

Liam Ridgewell, Timbers assistant coach: “I think [Finn Surman]’s improving on the ball. Me and him had a 25-minute conversation after training today about being on the ball and where he needs to pass it and where he needs to go. And he’s developing now… He’s exciting. He’s young and he’s hungry and he’s looking to go on to bigger and better things as well. That’s only a good thing for us.”

If he can keep this up, then I give him 2 years in the MLS, before a European club comes in for him.

Since his move to Oregon, I don't think I've read a single negative piece/take about him. Kids on that Tyler Bindon type trajectory.

Now just needs to back it up with a few solid seasons in the US, and the world is his oyster.

The Timbers have conceded 7 goals in their last 3 MLS games (2W & 1D), so it ain't all unicorns & rainbows. Portland are just scoring more themselves. And usually it's his CB partner who is erring.

He's had a very impressive start to the season, and keeping some experienced Portland CBs on the bench. Most importantly Neville loves him. I wouldn't be shocked if the Timbers sold him to a Championship club January 2026 window.

Should see some good add ons/solidarity payments triggered for the Nix, the next few years.

Gone by the end of the year... or, Portland will hold out in the hope he has a whale of a World Cup and adds a couple million to his price tag.

No many starting 21 yr olds CBs in the MLS.

Was always going to have a big part this season when Neville protected him in the draft. Dont think he needs multiple seasons in the MLS before moving on.
He strikes me as the sort of guy who takes things in his stride without to much hassle.
A bloody top bloke as well which makes it even better.

Oh dear, Timbers and Surman already down 3-0 away to San Jose before the 30 minute mark.

Timbers get one back.

4-1. Bit of a rude awakening! Must be fairly hot, if they’re playing away.

Surman gets a rest.
Veteran defenders Župarić (age 33) and McGraw (27) get a run. Hopefully neither of them have a blinder.

Edit - Timbers trail 2-1 into the 2nd half. McGraw with their goal.

Edit - Portland came back with 2 late goals to win 3-2

One bad game for the club out of a couple of months and a bunch of plaudits worth surely doesn’t get held too much against him.

Yipe Portland up to 2nd in the West.
Boxy's Minny 2nd, and Vancouver who have Finn Linder in their reserve team are 1st.

Full game Surman. Flashscore gave him a 7.4, mid range amongst the Timbers players.

Colombian Moreno with a wonder goal very early in the game. And that was the winner. Fittingly he walks into the stands to briefly hug what looks like his mama!

Surman benched?

Probably rested, like Boxy has been today for Minnesota.

By MLS standards it's a heavy schedule for clubs at the moment. A succession of midweek US Open Cup & MLS games. Timbers with 8 games this month.

Add in all the airline travel, and I'd guess Finn is getting a rest in Utah. Maybe he'll catch up with fellow Cantab Macey Fraser for a soda.

Surman rides the pine in a 0-0 draw. Making it a trifecta of NZ CBs doing the same today in the MLS.

Timbers went with a back 4 today, rather than 3 CBs.

20 yr old Ariath Piol (ex Macarthur) started for RSL. Whilst 24 yr old Lachlan Brook (ex WSW/Adelaide) was on their bench. Piol one goal in 9 MLS games to date.

Finished 1-1. Interesting that Surman's starting CB partner, Kamal Miller who was on a yellow, got subbed off for Župarić at HT.

Tensions a bit high in the big derby, and Miller at risk of a 2nd yellow?

Surman a couple of shaky moments first half, including Seattle scorer shooting between his legs for the goal, but also one of those great trademark lunging last min blocks as well. Flashscore gave him a high 7.5 - joint 2nd best in the starting 11.

Timbers are 4th in the West. Boxy's Minny are 2nd.
