Big smiles for Uncle Tony, as Rapids go on to win 2-0.

Still sounds like Rapids struck it a bit lucky with Toronto travelling back from Mexico, and rotating their squad after becoming just the third team in MLS history to reach the Concacaf Champions League final following a historic semifinal victory over Club America from Liga MX.

Excerpt from Flying Kiwis

"Huddo picked all three of his NZers to start for the second game in a row and, as seems to be a theme this week, there was an early goal to enjoy. Kip Colvey stabbed in a quality low cross from the right but couldn’t find a teammate, only for the clearance to land at Jack Price’s feet and he slotted it low from the edge of the area. Fine strike. Dominique Badji almost doubled it after 23 mins and again in the 25th but both his shots were saved. Kip Covley fed a nice ball to him for the second.

Good to see Colvey getting involved on attack down that right but defensively he looked fragile and he’s yet to win over the home fans. Early days but Hudson wasn’t having it either and replaced him in the first half, 39 minutes into it. Hometown lad Dillon Serna came in for him. Hudson called it “a tactical change” after the game so it wasn’t a recurrence of the injury he’d dealt with before the season."

Coach Hudson makes it a Kiwi starting trifecta. Colvey back in run on side with Wynne and Smith, as Colorado travel to Kansas.

Makes sense, even though the Switchbacks (Colorado Springs) have no official relationship with the Rapids (Denver), ie not a feeder side like many USL teams - as keeps Colvey in the same state.

Unlike Wynne, Colvey has struggled to break into Rapids first team under Hudson. This despite apparently being Rapids fittest player in the pre season. Got subbed at HT in one MLS game, and really not sighted since.

Is a pity as I thought he did a good job, for AWs verus Peru in those 2 playoff games.

Switchbacks (8th Western Conference) play Simon Elliott's Sacramento (4th) this weekend.

Colorado Springs finish their USL season with a 2-2 draw. Currently 11th on the Western Conference table (though a few other teams could overtake them with wins on the weekend), they finish outside the playoffs.

Colvey hasn't played since late August and no idea what he is up to.

I presume Rapids will cut him at end of the MLS season.

Even with his ex AWs coach in charge, and Rapids leaking goals he got few games.

I remember Rudan saying he was of some interest, but would need to trial first. However those comments by the Nix coach, may have just been talk along the lines of 'we are exploring all options to sign more Kiwis' - when really he wasn't serious.

this was Rudan on Colvey:

"Kip is an interesting player, attached to an MLS club in Colorado. There was a possibility he was going to be offered to us on loan. So you do all your homework and ask why is that?

"Then you look at some of the games and see he's good in some areas and lacking in other areas, so I'm then taking a leap of faith to offer a contract to someone that I don't really know all that much about, but it's not someone I can have a look at and bring into the environment."

Surely there is plenty of TV footage of him? And plenty of AWs he can talk too. He signed Kopa without seeing him in person (yes, I know that isn't a great argument for loaning Colvey sight unseen)

That seems like code for not good enough. If Tratt wasn't, Colvey can't have been either imo. Thinking about the Monty loan etc.

Amazing to retire at 24, but good on him for making his own call and going into study to have a career in something else.

I'm an optimistic pessimist.
I'm positive things will go wrong.

I guess Tim Brown retiring early was The Herbert Effect.

Good on him. Isn’t one of the pluses of kids going the US College, that they get an education as a backup, if pro football doesn’t work out.

Medical jobs in the US pay very good money, with their heavily privatised system. So he’s looked 4 years into the future, and compared the wages and job security on offer verus the uncertainty of pro football. He can buy a nice yacht and holiday home in the Sounds in 10 years.

Neither San Jose or Rapids worked out for him. Probably hit home when he got subbed at HT in one of the early season MLS games. Sounds like was getting a hard time from some Colorado fans, who saw him as not up to it, and from memory he was back then getting picked ahead of a young local kid.

Average debt after 4 year medical school in the US$ 179k. I guess Kip has some savings.

Av wages physician’s assistant in the USA $US105k/yr.

So not huge. I presume big difference between public and private systems.

Maybe an ex pro footballer will be driven to be a better than average student.

Wonder if he ever talked to Simon Elliott. From memory Elliott’s wife is a doctor in the US. Colvey played for Sacramento in the USL last season- before Elliott became coach.
