Jason Hick's Melbourne Knights stave off relegation with a 3-2 win in the play off. According to someone on Twitter that watched the second half of the stream, he was controlling the midfield well for the Knights.

Gonna chuck this in here cuz he isn't on a senior deal yet but Joe Champness has been getting a bit of game time with the Jets in pre-season. NZ born but has played for Aussie at youth level.

Another couple of goals in the Jets pre-season game last night.

And scored the winner again the Nix today as well.

Since he had NZ citizenship at the time of his Aus yoof call-up one assumes he is eligible...

I wonder if Hudson will get on the phone any time soon?

Don't really have any chance to look at him before the play offs, but it could be a massive carrot to play against the 5th placed SA team and potentially have a foot in the door for NZ..

Not saying he's good enough - I've never seen him play. Just wondering if Hudson will do another Ingham.

EDIT: Foot - not good!

He is one to watch out for sure. Just a pity he didn't break thru last season when we could dangle the u20's WC in front of him to change to NZ, there is always the Olympics in a couple years if Aussie doesn't make it.

I've never seen this guy play, but he seems to very much be a player the AWs have a million of? Or is he more of a striker than a wide attacker/attacking midfielder?

I honestly have no idea, all I know is that he is eligible and on the verge of breaking the Jets squad. He is just someone people should look out for, in case he does continue his pre-season form into the A-League season.

He's a wide forward.

Merrick must have a high opinion of him as he's signed a full squad contract for the 2018/19 & 2019/20 seasons

Anyone have any idea what de Jong's plans are? Had a stellar season in NSW NPL but that is not currently a pathway to A league. Netherlands?

Heard he has signed to play back in the National league but not in ChCh as last season

I wish A league teams would have a good at De Jong, sounds like a good player.

Must be worth a look. Consistent quality now for Canty United and in NSW NPL.

Would he have a Dutch passport? That would open up Europe. Fred was born in NZ.

Now that he has made his A-League debut (and scored), is it worth giving Champness his own thread?

What's the quality of football like in comparison? Similar? A bit better?

The money is the same wherever he plays as he is still on the NIX roster, just on the injured list.

I assume this can only come down to the quality of the league, or alternatively, he didn't see himself getting game time at Wellington?

Might be a reflection of the timing of his injury. I don't think he's back to fitness yet. VPL runs Feb to August so would lead better into his return to the Nix.

Will he return to the Nix though or will a deal be done to cut him free.  I'm not sure he's A League quality anymore, nor had been in his last couple of Nix seasons.

Was having a look thru NPL sides, these are the Kiwis I recognise. Maybe Wibblebutt has a better list?

Brock Messenger - Brisbane Strikers
Oliver Duncan - Brisbane Roar Youth
Emlyn Wellsmore - Brisbane Roar Youth
Zac Speedy - Gold Coast United

Michael Eagar - Port Melbourne Sharks
Jason Hicks - Bentleigh Greens
Louis Fenton - Melbourne Knights
Luka Prelevic - Pascoe Vale
Jeffrey Fleming - Avondale
Mitch Cooper - Green Gully

Andre De Jong - Hakoah Sydney City East

Mitch Cooper isn't eligible for NZ (he played for Australia U17 at 2011 WC & wasn't eligible for NZ at the time), but here's some others I know of:

Hayden McHenery - Western Pride

Shane Viitakangas - Bulleen Lions

Charlie Devereux - Adelaide United Youth

Lewis Miccio - CCM Youth

Godwin Darkwa - Sorrento

Jack Salter - Sorrento

There's probably more..

Given he has been playing in Aussie continuously since at least 2010 how could he have become eligible for NZ since that time?
