How does Alex Paulsen finish first equal for first place for young player of the year, and 6th equal with someone else for overall best player with Irankunda beneath him?

I don't make the rules. 😂

Almost feels like a bit of a throwaway award this year anyway - No pomp, no ceremony. I know there is no money floating around to do this thing, but it's just cheapened what should be a great night for players and their families/friends etc.

Different methodology of voting for them.

In the Johnny Warren Medal, votes are cast after each game (on a 3-2-1 basis) by four experts: a former professional player, a technical expert (including Socceroos coaches), the match officials from that game, and finally a senior member of the Australian football media.

Young Footballer of the Year is drawn from the monthly nominees voted on by technical experts and the media, with the overall winner selected by them and a fan vote.

Fair enough, that makes sense. Of course even if it was the same methodology for both it's still possible for it to have gone the way it did. I'm just outraged on behalf of our man is all.

At least they didn't disrespect him as much as they did Libby!

Proud moment for Kosta yesterday no doubt captaining his country for the first time, and topping it off with a goal. Only his 5th in 55 AWs matches. 4 against OFC teams.

I was swearing at him 2 years, when he was sent off against Costa Rica (a hugely frustrating game all round), and like many thought his AWs career was over. But full credit to him he's had a great resurgence the last 12 months or so.

Can he keep it going for 24 more months to the 2026 WC, when he will be 36. Lots of competition, won't be easy.

Forgot to post this at the time, but with his first round goal Kosta joined Krishna as the only players to have scored in 6 different seasons for the Nix.
He's also now the 4th equal all time goal scorer for the Nix with 23 (tied with Brockie and Brown).
Long live the BarbaRenaissance
Annual finals disappointment enthusiast.

ngl Barbarouses is kinda underappreciated online. Everyone celebrates his goal and gives some praise but then just moves on, but what he's been doing is pretty incredible. Under Chief he's accumulated 19 goals and 5 assists. Not many get to say they had a resurgence at 33/34. Without him we'd definately be worse off this season and last

Barbarouses has been great the last 2 seasons, no doubt.
He still looks quick, and covers a lot of distance during a game.

Kosta is our top player so far this season. His skills and work rate is unmatched. He seems also very animated on the field, looks like a true leader. He’s a legend and I really wish he wins another toilet seat or a grand final 😂

trigger warning:

contains David Ball and Oskar Van Hattum passing the ball before we score…at less two pre-assists there from Ball to counter the story being told that his influence was dropping off. Only because there were so many other creative players taking his place. Not the case this season…

All last season I was on that train - most goals we scored involved Ball for the assist or the pass before the assist. He was well involved in our build up play.

9 more goals to overtake Fornaroli and he goes 3rd all time ALM scorers.

Smeltz on 78 or 92 ALM goals?

Also one of, if not, the best player redemption stories in Phoenix history.

Kosta is the special guest.  Can anyone refresh my memory as to what the hell was wrong at the club the time he cut two years off his second stint with us?

That was the season Ernie resigned and the one before Kalezic came in. I don’t have any insight on how the club was being run at the time but from the outside it seemed a bit of a tumultuous time with some weird decisions made.

It was around the nixout stuff where the Nix potentially didn't have a future and I think the pressure to perform to get #metrics probably was felt by everyone.

I remember there was a fan on here that posted a video of him laying into Kosta after a game so (some) fans were turning on the team as well.

Wasnt the excuse at the time to do with family reasons as opposed to being Nix related.

NZ's whom little David Beckham (1998) redemption story.

Lets hope him, Payne plus Rufer are in a happy place, and finish the season strongly with the Nix.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360627130/world-cup-playoff-goal-eases-pain-all-white-kosta-barbarouses-red-card-last-time-around

“I think about it most nights, to be honest,” Barbarouses said of his red card in 2022 as he sat alongside coach Darren Bazeley after the match. “No joke – it crosses my mind at some point, quite frequently.”

“Whether my red card affected the overall outcome of the game, I, deep down, feel like it might have.

“I've been carrying that for a while, so to be able to sort of put that to the side well and truly now, I think I'll sort of feel a lot better about the whole situation.”

.......“It's
something that me and Tim do pretty much every day at training,” he said.

“We practise that all the time at club level and now it comes off at international level.

It's all about his (Payne's) first touch. If his first touch is opened up, and he gets to look up, I'm on my bike, and I know he's got the quality to deliver.

“From there I’ve just seen the keeper coming. I saw, obviously, from the bench that he's pretty aggressive coming off his line, so I just needed to get the chip on target, and I was fine.”

A few $100ks better. The math of 40% of $18mill ÷ gameday squad plus subs & reserves is quite interesting/mindblowing.

I assume the players share it on a pro rata played games basis?

Likely Jesse Randall & Liam Gillion have got out their calculators and are very happy. The Woodsman won't care so much.

nope, your sending off didn't cost us the game Kosta. What kost us the game was a fairly shocking VAR ref decision. Had the ref applied some commonsense the goal would have stood and I pick NZ would have continued on to triumph over what was a pretty average CR side. That decision rankings alongside the likes of underarm chappell and blind dick french Morrison v McDermott LBW. Hope we draw CR in world cup and can beat them. Would be great if that VAR ref is officiating and he can get egg on his face. But no, not bitter about it

"Barbarouses confirmed he and the Phoenix both have the option to extend his contract beyond the end of this season, but said whether they would was still to be decided, with the club nearing the end of a poor campaign after a stunning run to the semifinals last season."

Never heard of this happening before. Both parties able to extend the deal for another year unilaterally. Great news that the Nix can keep Kosta if they want to. Auckland or any other team can't take him away from us, unless we let him go

I have been unconvinced at times by Kosta, his touch and pass can be poor.

But he has been a revelation with his ability to get it right just when the Nix and the All Whites need him to in the last few years.

Kudos for Mondays goal particularly

The best form, so good to see. He has probably edged ahead of Waineo now. Still plenty of time between now and the naming of the squad though.
