100%  this, especially if someone other than you can access the unpublished stories on your site.

With the FFA's track record I wouldn't tempt fate though.

This x1000. I don't know the kitman (apparently he is nufcs mate) but you would think that you would keep it on a word doc off the internet until such time as you are prepared to publish. Its like getting ready for a night out and strapping a rubber on before you leave the house. You just do not do that.

Is it Rusty's fault though? Sounds like it's FFA's fault for ignoring the fact that the news hasn't been confirmed by either club yet.

Almost certainly not the rust man's fault. But a full time media manager wouldn't hurt - poor bloke has to do 2+ jobs and fit in writing releases with doing the laundry.

With such a cock up like this, could one say that they are airing their dirty laundry?

This seems common practice with the A-League sides - well especially the nix. Often the publish date in an online article is dated like 2 hours or days before it actually was visible on the site.

If you want to get a scoop on a #NixAnnouncement a few mins before the announcement, go to the nix news story page and hit refresh a few times untill they switch it to public but before they tweet the link

There's no way that press release would have got written without having at least in-principle agreement from them.

Surely?

Apparently its not confirmed.

Phoenix communications manager Russell Gray says the story was pre-written about a week ago and was ready to go when McGlinchey's deal was confirmed.

However, it hadn't yet been confirmed and it appeared someone had seen the story, thought it was a good one and put it up on the website, where it was picked up by media.

Gray said the situation was "very, very tricky" as negotiations were still underway with the involved clubs and he could not say when it was expected to be confirmed.

If it's the same FFA intern that sent the charity kit design to Fox Sports 2 months ahead of it's official release, I hope they never ever get a job in sports administration again.

The only way it could derail it is if CCM see the way their fans reacted to the news and decide that they don't want that to happen for real. It would be a shit reason to keep a player at the club, but at the end of the day this is going to come down to whether McGlinchey can secure a release from CCM or not, which is what we all knew a few weeks back.

The reasons why they are releasing him are still probably there, so I'm still hopeful.

Not our fault. Fact. Were we brave to trust the FFA, yes.

Is this going to derail anything: unknown. My sauces tell me the deal is genuinely not done, it's still a discussion. Whether he wants to come here or not is still very much up in the air.

The quote Rusty wrote for him can't be read to mean that it's effectively a done deal.

Yesterday this was on Herald, 3News & Stuff as it had been "confirmed" on the A-League website, once that original source was removed it can be considered not completed.

Well then if this deal is genuinely not done and still a discussion like you say then why make up a quote the guy has not said? That'll make McGlinchey angry cause he never said that and also Russel look like an amateur.

People say this is not our fault, ok sure, but then why make up a press release about a guy with quote he obviously has not said when he is still in discussion to come here. That, is absolutely amateur and the Phoenix take 100% fault for. I don't see anyone writing a future press release about an earthquake that has not happened with quotes attributed to the government that have not been said....

Just on the quote bit comms people often write these up and then get the approval of the person they're quoting. Just because someone is worth quoting doesn't mean they know how to say a worthy quote. Likely that McGlinchey would have seen this before it was published and had the chance to change his quote.

Ok so if McGlinchey has seen this and green lighted those quotes then talks must be a lot further along than what Smithy's source says it is.

I'm not calling anyone a liar or anything like that at all. I'm just saying this absolutely stinks of amateurism that would have been avoided had the release not been drafted. You can't attribute quotes to a guy that's not signed unless he has said them and if he has, then the signing is pretty much a done deal. Contrast that with CCMs stance where they are saying 'over our dead bodies'. Yes this intern fucked up but if was not written in the first place when its still at a discussion phase, then there is nothing to post...

I just shake my head and think to myself that even the Phoenix can find the shambolic angle in everything.

I have no problem with the release being drafted, my problem is with the amateurish decision to post it "unpublished" to somewhere that someone other than you can see it (Being FFA)...UGH!

I know. Odd.

I loved the quotes though - even managed to slip in the old "unlucky with injuries" line...

If Michael McGlinchey was yet to approve those quotes then essentially that press release has the status of Rusty Gray's Phoenix Fan Fiction.

Love it - I wonder if he's got any other good stuff stashed away in a drawer.

Lionel Messi signs for the Phoenix due to his infatuation with pop starlet Lorde?

Ernie Merrick leaves the Nix to become the new Doctor Who?

David Dome dies in a mysterious accident in the Nix office kitchen and is replaced by Russell Gray?

The possibilities are endless.

It did make me wonder how many other press releases have been drafted but never published. It would give us a real insight in to all the players we've nearly signed but not gotten over the line, and which have remained a secret. Remember when Ricki used to give stupid little clues on players he was talking to that never eventuated? I bet old Russ drafted up a few quotes from them as well.

That just makes you sound old JV. This is completely standard comms practice these days.

Right now there are literally millions of similar drafts being worked on in Content Management Systems around the world.

FFA's fault. End of.

Permalink Permalink

From my dealings with comms in my job, its pretty common for them to write quotes that are attributed to people who haven't necessarily said them. That person then generally gives the all clear after seeing the draft. I've also seen many draft press releases that, for one reason or another, haven't been published.

Permalink Permalink

The thing is however that the Nix have been talking to WeeMac for weeks now - so if they drafted the press release and posted it unpublished it must be close to done.

Permalink Permalink

I often write press releases for myself and other people. Not unusual to make up a fantastic quote for someone else to say, usual practise to ask if it is ok. In an environment where press releases are an everyday event, you are only too happy if someone comes up with a quote for you - saves you having to come up with one yourself. As for the unpublished side of this - I'm presuming that the Nix website is hosted by FFA in one of those generic - all clubs in the league have the same basic template etc and that the FFA have normal access to it.

Perhaps there is now a lesson in this too. Don't draft up press releases until there is fact.
