Does Canadian football pay reasonable coin? I wouldn’t have thought so.

Enough to scratch a living I'm guessing. Number of fringe/ex ALM guys play in the CPL. Incl ex Nixer Gael Sandoval who was there last season. So yeah Foley FC would likely pay more, but a Bevan may just not play that much.

Bevan on the pine, 1st leg CONCACAF Champions League league tie Cavalry against Orlando City.

Jesse Daley (ex Roar) starts for Cavalry & Lleyton Brooks (ex VUC) joins Bevan on the bench.

MLS outfit Orlando too good. Winning 3-0. Orlando also better prepared coming in off a number of friendlies in Florida. Bevan on at 59 mins (2-0).

FYI - Salas's parent club in Costa Rica, Deportivo Saprissa lost their 1st leg at home 2-3 to Philadelphia Union.

Oh and the new MLS season started today, Beckham's Barcelona Old Boys X1 (aka Inter Miami) beat Real Salt Lake 2-0. Messi & Suarez an assist each. Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets also started.

Finished a 3-1 win for Orlando, for a 6-1 win on aggregate. Nice for Bevan to score.
CPL doesn't start until the snow thaws in mid April.

Tyler Boyd scored last week for his new MLS team Nashville in a 3-0 win over Moca from Dominican Republic in the Champions League as well. Another ex Nixer Calvin Harris with a goal for the Rapids in the MLS on the weekend.

Bevan the 2nd Kiwi apparently to score in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Like alot of ex AWs of his era that went through US College system, Oughton's made a life Stateside. These days a player agent. Maybe same player agency as Ryan Nelsen??

I still think Bevan will be a decent pick up for Auckland. Even in that goal - a tap in, you could see him working hard to find space positionally with his run.

Tend to agree, though he got a bit lucky in that 2 Orlando defenders missed the incoming cross. Seems Auckland will use marquee visa spots on a striker & winger. So any Kiwis would likely just be backups. But hell Bling FC would have to pay more than the CPL.

Outside bet for AWs in March. Wood under an injury cloud. Champness not playing. Mata or Greive not doing much.

You might just be on to something here.

Taken from the CPL website.
'News of Shaw’s signing comes during a week where Cavalry also revealed that Golden Boot winner Myer Bevan has taken an indefinite leave of absence from the club for personal reasons. He has remained in his native New Zealand as the club gets set to open its season on Saturday in Hamilton against rivals Forge.'

And a link from the Calgary Herald reporting on Bevan's absence.

I hate it when people cite personal reasons.

I wonder if he has a deal, or thinks he can win one by linking back up with Auckland.

But it could be genuine as well, like the death of a close family member. Alex Greive sadly lost his dad at a too young age, about a year ago, so left St Mirren mid season for a time.

But if Bevan is in talks with Auckland, they are obviously private discussions for now, so yeah out of respect to the 2 clubs, you could go with the 'personal reasons' slant.

His second kid was born not too long before those two CONCACAF games back in Canada and America. And as far as I can tell his partner hasn't travelled to Canada and looks firmly set up back here in NZ. I'd say that will be a part of the reason.

Cavalry won't be willing either to let their gun striker go for free, so (purely speculation here too) if he does get a release, you can bet some money is going to be changing hands.

From Flying Kiwis.

Where in the world is Myer Bevan? Well, he’s back in New Zealand apparently. He was due to report back to Cavalry FC after a holiday in between the start of the new CPL season and the Concacaf Champions Cup first round matches back in February – during which he scored his team’s first ever goal in the competition (though they were eliminated 6-1 by Orlando FC over two legs). But it seems he has not done so, instead choosing to stay back in the homeland for what Calgary Herald reported as a decision “based on family matters”.

Cavalry GM/head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr: “[Myer] returned back to New Zealand following our Concacaf fixtures and has not reported back to join the team since. What we know is there’s personal reasons for his decision to remain in New Zealand. So beyond that, we’re trying to figure everything else out. He’s still a contracted Cavalry FC player but we’re placing him on the inactive roster for now.

There’s no rift between us. I can’t really go into his reasons yet because we don’t fully understand them all. I can say it is that it’s personal reasons why he’s chosen not to return with the club. I think once we understand what the full ramifications are, we can then make a further announcement.”

Bevan was Cavalry’s top scorer last season, tying for CPL Golden Boot. He also has a three-year-old daughter and he and his wife recently welcomed their second child. That article confirms that there are no health issues there with him or his family... perhaps that CPL money just wasn’t gonna cut it with an extra mouth to feed.

The Calgary Herald article implies that he’s stepping away from football, though there is a professional team about to emerge in Auckland so that’s an alternative possibility. Either way, fair enough. Gotta do what you’ve gotta do.

Well, to be fair, if it's for family reasons or no longer playing football then that could be fair enough if you squint your eyes enough.

But if it's to link up with Auckland then no, that's not a good look. That'd be dishonourng your contract and effectively going on strike.

So hoping it's more paragraph 1 than paragraph 2.

Could be a combination. Wife (if a Kiwi) saying I want to be near my family support network, as she manages being a mum to two infants & not one. As any parent will you, that can be tough without some help.

Then Auckland FC have a chat to Bevan, and maybe (with luck) they work out a deal. And yeah presumably the CPL doesn't pay much. I'm Mr Foley can pay Cavalry a transfer fee if this is what transpires - but really we have no idea what's the situation

I'd be very keen to see how he'd go at ALM level. To me he's the sort of guy who's career could have gone better if went through say the structured Weenix Academy. I think that would have made him a better player than doing that Nike Academy thing, and then relying on agents & some luck to find gigs around USL, Sweden, South Africa & Canada - interspersed with NZ National League stuff.  That's a harder road.

No idea if this is his wife, but seems a few years ago he was dating a Kiwi model.

I don't think we'll be seeing him turn out for Cavalry FC again. He's not even listed in their playing roster on their website anymore.

https://cavalryfc.canpl.ca/roster/CAV/2024

The mystery deepens...

For those wanting to know as well - The CPL salary cap for 2024 is $1,112,500 CAD (about $1,350,000 NZD) across I think they have something like a 24-25 man roster. You'd hope he'd be commanding six figures given the golden boot and the multi year deal, but I don't think the money cuts it if his young family are all the way back here in NZ.

Glossed over that one. 😅

You'd think they'd still have some mention or link to his profile on their website though, or at least have a separate column regarding his inactive status.

Canadian Championship.
Cavalry host MLS's Vancouver Whitecaps.
No Bevan for Cavalry and no Herdman for the Whitecaps.

19 year old Aussie defender Giuseppe Bovalina (ex Adelaide) on the bench for Vancouver. Lleyton Brooks (ex VUC) & Jesse Daley (ex Roar) starting for Cavalry.

Meanwhile, Cavalry have finally put a full stop on the Myer Bevan situation with a short-sharp statement which you’d imagine clears the pathway for Bevan to play for Auckland City next week in the National League:

In March 2024, Myer Bevan informed Cavalry FC that he would not be returning to the team for the 2024 Canadian Premier League season. Cavalry FC has since granted permission to Bevan to play amateur football in New Zealand where he is residing with his partner and their two young children.”

It's Wiki so take it with a grain of salt, but Cambodian club Boeung Ket FC have Bevan listed in their squad.

Moses Dyer's exploits in the CPL would certainly put Kiwi strikers on the radar there.

Louis Zabala and Cyrus Dehmie (both ex Brisbane Roar) play for Boeung Ket.
Also an English guy and a Scot there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeung_Ket_F.C.

Boeung Ket are currently 4th and Dyer's Phnom Penh Crown are 3rd.

And Moses Dyer may soon have some compatriot rivalry over in Cambodia because here’s a sneaky rumour for you: sources over there reckon that fourth placed Boeung Ket, whom PPC are playing in their next match, are soon to announce Myer Bevan as their new striker. They’ve recently added Aussie-Ivorian Cyrus Dehmie from Sydney Olympic so it’s possible he’s been signed instead of Bevan, although they did say there will be further additions ahead of the second half of the season.

Time will tell if this one comes true. Bevan struggled for goals in the latest NZ National League but he still won the championship with Auckland City and you’d have to think he’d bang a few away at this level.

I’m surprised he wasn’t picked up by either the Nix or AFC, I thought he was quite handy, was doing well at cavalry before walking out. Admittedly although I know he played for Auckland city I don’t know if he was doing good, had/has he dropped right off or at 27 are clubs thinking to old?

Bevan didn't do much at Auckland City when he returned from Canada.
If AFC let Max Mata go they were never going to sign Myer B.

Be interesting to see how Bevan (age 28) goes in Cambodia compared to Dyer (also 28). Their club teams seem pretty comparable in strength.

You'd say Moses looks a better chance of being closer to an ALM call up. But the rumoured $NZD170K salary in Cambodia with it's very low living expenses might be the better money gig.

Even though he left Cavalry due to 'personal reasons' a little while back, the Canadian club basically held on to his contract rights until whenever the contract ended - From memory I think he even signed an exetension to stay on until the end of the 2024 season.

In reality no one was going to pay Cavalry to buy him out, but since that period has now ended he's free to go wherever.

Bevan has already made his debut the other night off the bench in a 1-0 loss to, you guessed it, Moses Dyer's Phnom Penh Crown.

By the way, those two (Dyer & Bevan) aren’t the only kiwis in the Cambodian league. There’s also 21yo Ashnarvy Mustapha, formerly of Christchurch United, who’s been over there playing as a local thanks to his split heritage. He’s made four appearances for Kompong Dewa... although has missed the last five games so might be injured.
