ok, blackburn have cancelled ryan nelsen's contract
he is now a free agent and can sign for any club outside the transfer window
here's all of football365's comments on their transfer blog regarding nelsen;
"Cripes. Sky's Graeme Bailey reckons the mystery defender Harry was talking about was Ryan Nelsen."
"And Harry confirms the Nelsen thing, which seems utterly barking."
"He's (redknapp) just got transfer window Tourette's, hasn't he?"
"Just in case you were thinking 'Isn't Ryan Nelsen injured?' we can answer for you. Yes. Yes he is. He hasn't played since August 20."
"Bassong has gone to Wolves on loan, apparently. No word on whether Ryan Nelsen (remember - out since August with a knee injury) has come in to 'replace' him."
"One does wonder about Tottenham's transfer policy. They've let Bassong and Pienaar go in the last hour of the transfer window, and apparently don't have anyone lined up to replace them."
last one a bit harsh lol

so his contract is cancelled, does that mean he doesn't have to abide by transfer window rules now as well? im not sure around the rules but i thought if a player is a free agent then they can sign year round?
even if it doesnt happen, these shenanigans dont bode well for the nix - if a highly placed EPL side is still interested when he's 34/injured, then he's a long way away from coming home :(

miles away i'd say
at 34 he should be far from finished, provided he can keep the injuries at bay, which is a big 'if'
re: transfer window, yip, he is free to move to whoever, whenever. window rules don't apply

I know it would be too hard for you to type those words so I've done that for you!
No need for thanks.

he is now a free agent and can sign for any club outside the transfer window
If his contract was cancelled in the previous transfer window (up to 2300 31st Jan)
He is a free agent and can move to any club in this new window
If his contract was or is cancelled in the new window he is a free agent but can`t be signed by another club (English) until the beginning of next season.

that american article had a quote from the agent saying 'we settled the blackburn contract'
the term 'settled' suggests the rumour may be true, what a day for Ryan, lump sum plus new contract at a better club, happy days eh

You never know, he is a free agent so if spurs decide they don't want him or he fails a fitness test, he might decide to end his career in nz. It would be a massive pay cut though.

Probably a massive pay cut going to Spurs too.

there's an international clearance to get through, i hear
i'm wondering if there is risk associated with transferring and thus having to re-apply?
anyone know the answer to this?

so its a 6 month deal with a further year option
i would guess he'll be on pittance for 6 months with a decent whack on offer next season if he proves himself

When I first heard the news, I was honestly baffled. But now it all makes sense.
If Blackburn can't count on him to play for the rest of the season (either because of the injury or the conflict within the club), it makes no sense to keep paying him. So a mutually agreed release is a perfectly reasonable solution.
For the Spurs, it's nothing more than a punt that costs them next to nothing. They get a player who has a solid record in the Premiership, but who's aging and has had an injury problem recently. So you give him a deal until the end of the season and see how it goes - if it works, great, if it doesn't, nothing really lost.
And for Ryan, if he makes it, he has a shot at the Champions League next season for the first time in his career, and if doesn't, it doesn't. At least he gets the opportunity.

Because I'm procastinating on some other stuff I have to do, I just had a little internet hunt to see what was being said about this. Interestingly,
the Independent is reporting it as confirmed. Doesn't quote a source or anything though.

He will need to re-apply for his work permit. NZ's low ranking means it will most likely go to appeal, but should get granted based on his past experience.

that US link a page or two back with quotes from his agent has the deal done as well, i think this is now a formality
