I have huge admiration for Smeltz as a footballer but he must be dumber than a sack of wet mice!!!! FFS.....what do you expect if you go to China? Duh! try billions of Chinese people speaking Chinese, eating Chinese food and living in Chinese houses!

I think that's a bit harsh.  It's very very difficult to perform on the pitch if you and your family aren't happy off it.  I say wait until we hear the full story.  Not sure why he signed there in the first place though (aside from the obvious - cash)

yeah altough I doubt such big clubs would be so slow after a great WC performance in trying to secure a player. I mean, c'mon, scoring vs Italy and playing 3 good games, surely means you will get some attention. If you're a decent club you'll get in touch straight away.

How could they take him on trial when after the world cup all the players were on holiday?

If Fallon and Killen can play Championship level then Smeltzy could easily slot into a Champ side. I'll bet his agent is mega annoyed....he won't get his cut out of the transfer deal to China now that Shane has walked.....mind you he could get a nice payday if Smeltz goes to England.

Would you employ someone who just ups and leaves without a bye your leave because his missus said she doesn't like the place? You could spend the same money and buy a simila rplayer that wants to be there. I wouldn't touch Smeltz with a barge pole now.

As much as I hate them I would prefer him to sign with Sydney or Melbourne. I want Smeltz at the biggest club possible where he will still play reguarly. He's too good for the Gold Coast. I think he's got one more good year and if he can't pick up a contract in a decent league then that will be it. And being in a championship winning team would help his creditals.

I doubt that Shane will be going anywhere near the UK. There is a real good article in the Guardian football section about post WC transfers. Basically is says the days of someone coming out of nowhere and being signed after a good WC are over. The main reason is that there are so many football scouts around the globe working to find players and also so many agents offering players, that there are almost no "unknown players" left.

TWO-time A-League Golden Boot Shane Smeltz has confirmed he will make his return for Gold Coast United in Sunday's pre-season friendly against North Queensland Fury at Carrara Stadium after the disintegration of his short-lived move to Chinese outfit Shandong Luneng.

''I am happy to be back involved and just looking ahead to doing what I do best, which is score goals,'' he said.

United CEO Clive Mensink insisted: ''There is no dispute with Shandong.  'We have retained Shane's international transfer certificate and we don't believe there are any ongoing issues. We have the support of the FFA in this.''

you are all commenting on 'assumptions'.......none of this stuff is factual. Smeltz must have smellt a rat, nobody in their right mind would walk away from a 'big payday'. Think about it. He said there were issues, none of us were there. it will all come out in the wash, stop the bagging, he was great for the Phoenix and IS great for NZ Football, he helped put us on the map!!
