I'm 1 for 1 so far. Rumours for Qatar look to leave me at 50% though

Looking (hopefully) better for Australia, they didn't want two English speaking countries in a row. KiwiChick12010-12-03 04:41:08

Australia had the best bid of the 2022 group, and second best of the entire group.

Qatar had the worst bid in the history of professional sports tournament event hosting.

That being said, I wish Qatar all the best and hope they prove me wrong

I actually can't believe it. How can Qatar host a World Cup?! Stupid slimy Bin Hamman and corrupt ExCo members.

I hoped for Russia and Australia so disappointed that Qatar won the latter.  People should check out the 442 forum - absolute lolfest.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if corruption occurred but the way some of the people on that forum are talking it's almost as if they witnessed the corruption with their own eyes.

Qatar just seems ridiculous, a combined bid by the emirates (say Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, and Kuwait) would make far more sense and be significantly more interesting to attend as a spectator.

BREAKING NEWS! - Chatham Islands secede from New Zealand and form an independent republic! Provisional government have announced their first orders of business as being "picking a flag, a national anthem, and bidding for the 2026 FIFA World Cup"

I'm not shocked as such, just really disappointed, not so much by the fact that Aussie didn't win, but because Qatar did. It's a sad day for FIFA and for football if all these corruption rumours are true.
The 442 guys are pretty much all Aussies and they just can't believe it.

2018 : Gas; and
2022 : Oil.

Well done to both fossil fuel resources for their excellent bids.

Geological surveys have found billions worth of mineral deposits in the Sarr Chasm, an underwater trench located near the main island.

Picked them both. Amazing to see the reaction in England after being eliminated first round!

And England only got two votes in the first round. Bahahahahahahahahaha.

If you were reading the media here leading up to the vote you would have sworn England were overwhelming favourites (and indeed they were at Betfair).

Interesting that Qatar are going to deconstruct many of the stadia after the World Cup and then use the parts to build stadiums in developing countries. Wouldn't be surprised to see Tottenham put their hand up for some scraps, the area could certainly do with some regeneration.

They are truly spectacular!!

My biggest issue with these voting systems is that there is clearly an unlying issue ($) because countries like Japan had 3 votes in round one, and then once Aus was gone, they went down to 2 votes in the second round and were eliminated?

How could they lose votes after one round? Surely the people with their hearts set out to vote for the Japs wouldn't change their mind after one round. I smell a cash rat...

Qatar getting this has been a true bolter. There were strong rumours that the Ruskies and Yanks had this locked in. Guess not.

Interesting that the average high in Qatar is well above 40 degrees celcius through June and July. I guess they'll be playing the games in the dead of night then.

Easy, Aussie had a number of second preference votes, while Bin Hamman had a number of first preference votes locked in from South America, so could afford to vote for Japan (or have someone else on your side do it) to push them through ahead of Aussie, then switch back to Qatar. Also probably locks up the Japanese vote, as they will be thankful to not be shamed by being the first one out.

Once FIFA came out with saying OFC could only vote if Temari resigned I knew that Aussie had no show as FIFA didn't want them to win it.

They're building air conditioned stadiums.

It will be interesting seeing how they get around the 1 stadium per city thing that I thought was the rule - isn't Doha the only city?

You can drink inside the stadiums and designated fan zones. You just can't act like a lager lout in public, pissing on lamp posts and other such acts of debauchery.

Half the stadiums are in Doha. I don't think FIFA will care.

Three for me, and two for them.

From Wiki:

The country has undergone a period of liberalization and modernisation during the reign of the current Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, who came to power in 1995. The laws of Qatar tolerate alcohol to a certain extent. However, the few bars and nightclubs in Qatar operate only in expensive hotels and clubs, much Distribution Company, the only importer and retailer for alcohol in Qatar. Under Qatar's Sharia, it is illegal to show alcohol or be drunk in public.

Qatar, I love those signs as you go into the malls, 'no singles loitering', i.e. no looking at the girls going up the escalator and then there's family day (Friday) at the city centre, single men not allowed at all.   Despite that, a very lovely place, try heading up to the hills, very picturesque stuff.

I suspect we will then play off against the 4 placed side instead of 5th in Asia???

Everything I read before the vote suggested Qatar was the favourite for 2022.
