Australia had the best bid of the 2022 group, and second best of the entire group.
Qatar just seems ridiculous, a combined bid by the emirates (say Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, and Kuwait) would make far more sense and be significantly more interesting to attend as a spectator.
BREAKING NEWS! - Chatham Islands secede from New Zealand and form an independent republic! Provisional government have announced their first orders of business as being "picking a flag, a national anthem, and bidding for the 2026 FIFA World Cup"
The 442 guys are pretty much all Aussies and they just can't believe it.

I didn't see that one coming.

Yes we can!
Just one problem.Where do we get the billions of dollars needed?

If you were reading the media here leading up to the vote you would have sworn England were overwhelming favourites (and indeed they were at Betfair).

Three for me, and two for them.

Three for me, and two for them.

They are truly spectacular!!
My biggest issue with these voting systems is that there is clearly an unlying issue ($) because countries like Japan had 3 votes in round one, and then once Aus was gone, they went down to 2 votes in the second round and were eliminated?
How could they lose votes after one round? Surely the people with their hearts set out to vote for the Japs wouldn't change their mind after one round. I smell a cash rat...

Easy, Aussie had a number of second preference votes, while Bin Hamman had a number of first preference votes locked in from South America, so could afford to vote for Japan (or have someone else on your side do it) to push them through ahead of Aussie, then switch back to Qatar. Also probably locks up the Japanese vote, as they will be thankful to not be shamed by being the first one out.
Once FIFA came out with saying OFC could only vote if Temari resigned I knew that Aussie had no show as FIFA didn't want them to win it.
They're building air conditioned stadiums.
Three for me, and two for them.
With no booze
You can drink inside the stadiums and designated fan zones. You just can't act like a lager lout in public, pissing on lamp posts and other such acts of debauchery.
[QUOTE=aitkenmike]It will be interesting seeing how they get around the 1 stadium per city thing that I thought was the rule - isn't Doha the only city?
Half the stadiums are in Doha. I don't think FIFA will care.

From Wiki:
The country has undergone a period of liberalization and modernisation during the reign of the current Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, who came to power in 1995. The laws of Qatar tolerate alcohol to a certain extent. However, the few bars and nightclubs in Qatar operate only in expensive hotels and clubs, much Distribution Company, the only importer and retailer for alcohol in Qatar. Under Qatar's Sharia, it is illegal to show alcohol or be drunk in public.
Qatar, I love those signs as you go into the malls, 'no singles loitering', i.e. no looking at the girls going up the escalator and then there's family day (Friday) at the city centre, single men not allowed at all. Despite that, a very lovely place, try heading up to the hills, very picturesque stuff.
Everything I read before the vote suggested Qatar was the favourite for 2022.
