I have been to both Bahrain and Dubai and have happily got drunk.  Hell, I even managed to touch my wife on one occassion (on the arm).

The weather can get very hot (one time I was in Dubai in May and it was 48 degrees by the pool, and 47 degrees in the hotel sauna) but there is plenty of air conditioning so it is possible to stay out of that heat all day while getting around and about.  Hotels are great, people are friendly and the fact that you will be able to go to 2 games in a day will be brilliant - worst case scenario is that you will get to a game and then be able to watch the other ones on that day (I missed loads of the WC in SA due to being on buses all day).

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

So much wrong in that post.
Buff, which parts of Zinni's thread are wrong?
He spelt Qatar wrong, it's about 10 times bigger than Stewart Island, it's a desert so obviously there is going to be plenty of arid land, you can get a pint there in a number of places you just can't act like a complete drunken tit in public, tourists don't have the same dress restrictions as locals. Basically he lumped Qatar with the rest of the Middle East, in a similar way to how a lot of patronizing tossers lumped South Africa with the entire African continent.
I read the thread quickly so did not pick up on the spelling. I think you will find the dress restrictions do apply and no affection to be shown in public.(even if it is your wife) I don't think it is patronizing to lump Qatar in with the rest of the Middle East, because a lot of them ARE like that.I agree that not having larger louts around are a plus. They are different, but that is not a criticism, it is just a fact. The main thing is that football is the winner.

Saying one country is representative of Middle Eastern culture is like saying France (or any other European country) is representative of Europe.

It is just shows ignorance of the diversity of culture (i.e. language, religion, traditions, arts etc)across the Middle East region.

If having the WC in Qatar helps in dispelling some of the prejudices that exist and enlightening some in the West to the cultural richness of the region then it is a wise decision.

Disclaimer; I'm not accusing any of the quoted, or any otherposters of ignorance -my passion for the region comes from having lived and worked there for a number of years.

I know where you are coming from. I also hope that this WC can bring the two people closer.
Perhaps the mis use of the word Middle Eastern was not what I meant. I was refering to the Arabian Peninsula.
The people all speak Arabic, most of them are Sunni Muslims but their culture is very similar
I have not been to Qatar, but have been to Yemen,Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq, and the only people of those that I would call Arabs are the Yemeni.

Damn, no 6 hour bus trips. Have to drink in the hotel because you can't drink in public and there are sod all pubs etc.
Crap shabeen scene too, in all likelihood.

I just watched the BBC Panorama programme Fifa's Dirty Secrets and that outlines payments made to Fifa officials.

You'd think that the awarding of the finals to the countries with the worst technical bids would raise some questions, especially when Panorama has outlined pretty clear evidence of corruption in the process.

Maybe this will act as the catalyst for a change in Fifa, but not holding my breath.

Where's our friend Bahrain? I would like to hear his perspective on the World Cup being awarded to neighboring Qatar.

Got a message from an Egyptian-American friend on Facebook last night. He offered me 700 barrels of oil in exchange for the 2026 World Cup...

Good article re: Qatar from the Guardian, I think it dispells a lot of the myths being spread at the moment. I'm warming to the idea of a trip to the MIddle East in 2022 myself, yes it would have been nice to have it in Oz, but we'll get over it.

I think of note is the Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index ranking Qatar as less corrupt than both the UK and the US...

One of more concerning things about giving the WC to Russia & Qatar is something called the Press Freedom Index complied by reporters without borders.
The PFI ranked the NZ,UK and Oz in the top 20
Qatar 120 and Russia 140.
FIFA has given their two World Cups to countries in which the press is muzzled, most powerless, and least able to question their masters.

Gutted Australia didn't get the 2022. But sh*t happens. Really pissed off about Reynalds ban, seems to be pretty gray in what happened.

Russia will be interesting, Will be good to see what happens and what they can develop. I would like to go to 2018 world cup, so it better be up to scratch.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

I think if anything can be taken from the whole voting debacle is Fifa's disdain for free press - just look at the criticism aimed at The Times, despite Fifa taken action against executives as a result of the paper. Oh, and its acceptance of racism and football violence (Russian football is rife with both and Qatar doesn't acknowledge Israel).

Actually Qatar has acknowledged Israel since early 2009. Once again someone has gotten their facts muddled.

Yeah, I just read that, my apologies. I agree there are misconceptions about the country, but a number of concerns are legitimate. I think if they pull it off, it will an incredible event. There are a lot of hurdles, as the risk assessments showed. I have more concerns with the Russian one to be honest.

There is already talk of changing the WC in Qatar to January because June/July are too hot. That could be interesting.
Funny how the Asian Cup in Qatar is next month.

Doesn't dispel any of the allegations made on Panorama  as far as I can tell.

I doubt there will be any problems in Russia if it is a mafia run country like some experts have said. They will make sure no trouble happens. The old Chechens might be a worry though.

I just downloaded and watched it too, that journo (Andrew Jennings) is a bit of a prat, but i have read his books, a couple on the Olympics and his excellent one on FIFA, and he has a way of getting key information.

There will be no change as there will no desire for FIFA to do anything, the only way something could happen is if half of them vote for change, and can you imagine that!

Also the only way they can be held accountable for fraud etc is if the country the reside in takes action, and Switzerland where they are based has an official contract with them saying they won;t do that

They are clearly as corrupt as can be, but when you lead a life style like that - why change?

Jack Warner has been found guilty of being a ticket tout and made to pay a $1m payment to charity, but he wasn't suspended, thrown of FIFA exec or any thing of the like....

So now Fifa come out and say that Qatar may not host all the games, sounds like a bit of buyers remorse.

On the plus side whow knew that our Aussies friends loved us so much, what could have been (They will be blaming us for losing them the WC now  ):

"In an interview with sports daily L'Equipe on Thursday, Blatter said Australia's 2022 World Cup bid proposed some matches in New Zealand. He added that "it could be the same in Qatar and that some matches could take place in nearby countries," although he did not say where."

Just read the Guardian article.....thats amazing. If Oz had got the Cup some games might have come to NZ. Now I am more gutted Australia missed out. World cup games in NZ....only in your wildest dreams, but it would have been fantastic.

Now Blatter is saying that Qatar might some games to other countries.....sounds like he is making up the rules as he goes.

It would be a great idea though. Qatar is the most BORING country I have ever visited. There are much more interesting places in the Middle East. Games in Cairo or Damascus or even Beruit would be excellent for the fans.

I think you are right about Blatter making it up as he goes. I don't believe him re the Oz bid and games for NZ.
I read all the bids on line and nowhere did Qatar or Australia mention playing games outside their countries.

Australia giving matches to NZ was mentioned early into the bidding process, but never got past consideration IIRC.

Well that where you are wrong Buff. It is only my opinion that it is the same. As for being ignorant, I think you might take the cake for that.

Neither of you should be stereotyping. Here are some hard facts about Swiss people:

They like yodelling
They produce cheese, chocolate and cuckoo clocks
They hide stolen Jewish gold from WWII in their bank vaults
They like blowing 30 foot vuvuzelas on mountain sides
