Toss New Zealand, who chose to bat first
Series England led the 3-match series 1-0
Player of the match MS Panesar (England)
In truth, New Zealand didn't help themselves. Catches were spilled, overthrows gifted and the fielding was not nearly as alert

Queenslander 3x a year.
But we'll learn - fast I hope.
Three for me, and two for them.
If we'd been hammered within 2 and a half days I'd have taken it much more readily.

May 27, 2008
New Zealand have been dealt another injury blow after Jesse Ryder, their hard-hitting opening batsman, was ruled out of the one-day series against England. He has failed to recover from severing his tendon when he put his hand through a toilet window in Christchurch.
Ryder made a big impression against England in February when his 196 runs at 49 - at a strike-rate of 91 - were a key part of New Zealand's series victory. It was while he was celebrating the win that he injured himself, and he later gave a remorseful press conference.
Daniel Flynn's fearful facial injury when he had a tooth knocked out batting in the second cricket test for New Zealand against England could have been avoided had he worn his helmet properly.
This is the belief of Cricket Express director Michael Mead who felt Flynn did not have his chin strap fastened properly, and the grille was on the wrong setting too close to his face.
"If the helmet is being worn properly then this sort of thing should not have happened," Mead said from the company's Auckland headquarters.
"I have seen the high resolution pictures of the ball forcing the grille into Flynn's face. While it should have flexed as it did, it should not have been worn close enough to do damage. It also appears the strap was not attached correctly with the helmet not sitting properly on his head."
Flynn had a tooth knocked out on impact and had another removed later. He was struck when attempting to hook a ball from England pace bowler James Anderson. Flynn retired hurt on four in the first innings and did not play again in the match, leaving the Black Caps a specialist batsman down in the test it lost by six wickets.
Mead said players often took little notice of the correct settings for wearing helmets, with the grille having several levels that could be adjusted.
"They just think wearing a helmet makes them all right."
He wants to see more attention paid by players to wearing protective gear properly.
He said at least Flynn had kept his eye on the ball when other batsman in recent days, like Jacob Oram and West Indies player Shivna-rine Chanderpaul, had not.
"A lot of players these days turn their head away from the ball because they think they are protected by the helmet," Mead said.
Chanderpaul in the first test against Australia at Jamaica this week was struck on the back of the head when turning away against speedster Brett Lee and appeared to have been briefly knocked unconscious.
Chanderpaul returned to his feet after being struck to make a courageous 118.
Mead said doing things such as exposing the back of the head where Chanderpaul was hit can lead to neurosurgical issues.
Mead said the Albion helmet used by the Black Caps was regarded as one of the best in the world.
The helmet is also used by Australia.
New Zealand Cricket changed to using it after the Missouri helmet worn by Michael Papps cracked when he was hit and concussed by Lee in a one-day international at Auckland in 2004-05.

Queenslander 3x a year.
You'll see plenty of him over the next 10+ years... unless the turbanators get him... ????
Thought Mill's first spell in the morning session was outstanding, especially that over when he removed Cook, then beat Vaugh with 3 consecutive deliveries. Unplayable.
Need to mop up the tail quickly tonight and get off to a good start without losing early wickets.
Queenslander 3x a year.
He misses a straight ball pitching on length at normal pace for test cricket that hits middle and off, and that's not a bad shot?

The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!

and i know it is very easy to be wise post the fact but i was real iffy about playing flynn in this game. if he fails again in the second innings his confidence will be absolutely shot, i was a fan of playing fulton/marshall ahead of him and saying look mate have the one day series to get your confidence back. well bat you at 6 for the whole series and you can kick start your international career. just hope this test doesnt do damage it may take a long time to repair.
but then in saying all of that the whole thing was complicated by bmac not keepingbopman2008-06-07 16:11:30
