WOMAN'S DIARY
Sunday 8th March 2009
Saw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely.
I'd been shopping in the afternoon with the girls
and was a bit late meeting him, thought it might be that.
The bar was really crowded and loud,
so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk.
He was still very subdued and distracted
so I suggested we went somewhere nice to eat.
All through dinner he just didn't seem himself
- he hardly laughed and didn't seem to be
paying any attention to me or to what I was saying,
I just knew that something was wrong.
He dropped me back home and I wondered
if he was going to come in,
He hesitated but followed.
I asked him what was wrong,
but he just half shook his head and turned the television on.
After about ten minutes of silence I said that I was going upstairs to bed,
I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him deeply,
He just gave a sigh and a sad sort of smile.
He didn't follow me up immediately but came up later and,
to my surprise, we made love
- but he still seemed distant and a bit cold.
I cried myself to sleep -
I think he's planning to leave me -
maybe he's found someone else.

MAN'S DIARY:
Sunday 8th March 2009
New Zealand lost the cricket.
Gutted.
Got a root though.
The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
Been saying this for four months now. Glad I'm not the only one.
Here's a variation for you, pick on form and ability. Add my voice to the give Franklin a go chorus.
Having set the selection standard that going for 10 an over like Southee did means out you go, we will be looking for quite a few new bowlers for the next one dayer.
Turner was on record as saying Franklin's bowling is a bit sporting, well at the moment I'd be happy for a bit of sporting bowling rather than gifting bowling.
as much as I/'d love to see Franklin in the team, I can't see him or anyone we have available at the moment being able to knock these indian batsmen over! they are just that much better than us.
Mind you it doesn't help when your captain decides to bat first on a wicket that is clearly going to be bowler friendly with conditions suiting swing early - I'm with Martin Crowe on this one, we chase better at home, so we should do what we are good at! they will destroy us at auckaldn - especially with the short boundaries square!Queenslander 3x a year.

Granted the Indian batsmen are a class act, but a lot of the bowling to them has just been poor. The pressure the Indian batsmen have put the bowlers under has been immense but rather than bowling good lines and lengths and accepting that these guys can score off good balls our bowlers have made it easier for the Indian batsmen by bowling long hops, full tosses and both sides of the wicket. You cannot set fields to that rubbish.
Totally agree with you regarding the decision to bat first, strikes me as too much tactical thinking not enough smarts. Our bowlers needed every bit of help they could get and the only way batting first was going to help was if we posted a giant score and pressured the Indian top order. We do not have a great record of setting big targets and 270 was only par.
No way in hell we will take 20 wickets, though Martin might offer something different with the ability to swing it back into the RH

Franklin makes the team as a batsman. 2nd change at best as a bowler.

Any of them scored more runs than Franklin in the 4-day compettion this season? Franklin's the same as Oram these days - batsman who bowls. Elliott, Broom, Ingram? You're avin a laff. How should have been in the team as an opener ahead of Guptill, Cumming shouldn't get anywhere near the Black Caps ever again. And I mean, ever again. Even if we only have 10 other cricketeres in the whole country and Craig Cumming, I would rather we didn't play than have Cumming play for our national team again.

Basically it all comes back to me not thinking Franklin is good enough as a batsman to be there, not good enough as a bowler but combined maybe just gets there. I think pick a guy who is a specialist batsman basically, or given the issues we will undoubtedly have with bowling India out shift everyone up one and playanother specialist bowler.
Fair nuff.
Elliott probably deserved a shout because of his ODI performances, but has been rubbish in tests any time he had a chance. Franklin has not - he does have a test hundred, and a very good first-class season behind him with the bat. He also had minimal chances with the bat against WI, including a very unfortunate dismissal when he slipped and hit the wicket with his foot after playing a sexy leg-glance for 4...I don't think either Ingram or Cumming are good enough. Broom has not really done that well in ODIs - he's hung around for some partnerships, but hasn't really posted a big score that says you have to take him into account right now. But he's got something, and I think he'll get his chance both in ODIs and Tests.
Btw, don't expect Jimmy to get 5fer, but would be absolutely rapt if he did. But will be very disappointed if he plays in all 3 tests and gets no runs.el grapadura2009-03-13 13:48:32
