I think one solution is to stop employing rubbish coaches.

Another is to never again force a player into early retirement. Look at our team, who are our senior players? Vettori, McCullum, Bond - ok but Taylor should not be our senior batsmen. It is no wonder Dan and Brendon are always bailing us out with match saving knocks. The likes of Daniel Flynn and Tim Macintosh should be rubbing shoulders with much more experienced players than they are.

yea, vincent, macmillian, astle i thought all had a bit more left in them

And Flemming. Thank you John Bracewell.

The problem with our inexperience at test level in the batting lineup comes back to the point TopLeft made, our domestic cricket is a step below. The guys who score runs at Domestic level, Sinclair, Cumming, Bell, Papps, How are all incredibly experienced and have all captained their domestic sides, if even 2 of them had made the step up there would have been a better core of experience. Instead we pick guys like Flynn who undoubtedly have potential but have no real experience behind them, MacIntosh did but that tends to be the exception.

Downey why not Sinclair? He has had chances yeah, but so has Fulton. If you are picking the 6 best batsman in the country to be in that top 6 I would like to see you come up with an argument that says Fulton deserves to be there ahead of Skippy. Also Downey MacIntosh 31 in that 2nd innings was exactly what the game needed, his 31 and Elliots 20odd were so incredibly vital in that win.

MacMillan in his book also talks about the growing impact his diabetes was having in his cricket, so yeah he didn't get on with Bracewell/Charlesworth but I would also suggest we wouldnt have seen to much more of him (especially in the whites).

As to who the long term top 3 is, I think Guptill and Flynn at 1 and 3. Not sure about the 2nd opener, probably Waitling in the long term or this guy down here who is scoring big runs this season but in the meantime I would stick with MacIntosh. Taylor and Ryder have 4 and 5 sown up, then it depends on what you want to do with an all-rounder, do you move Vettori up to play an extra bowler? Lengthens the tail a little bit to much for my liking. This time last year I was advocating picking Williamson in the next year or 2 and asking Jesse to take on more bowling given that Williamson is worth 10 overs a day probably. However he hasn't produced so much of late and I hear he wasn't to impressive in India on the A tour. That leaves Franklin as the obvious allrounder but my feelings on him are relatively well known, only a test match bowler on a lawn when you have a bank of cloud above you, yet to see him produce with the bat at international level the way he has domestically.

So that takes me back to square one, with Ryder out I would stick with the same balance. Elliot is probably the best option at 6 if you can get overs out of him as long as BMac and DV score runs.

Healthy to have this debate after we won a test match though!

If we can sort our top 3 out and can have Ryder back and him Taylor and Bmac on form with this current bowling lineup I think with some luck we can push the Aussies in March. They will be onto another opener by then because Watson wont last to much longer, Siddle and Hilfenhaus don't frighten me neither does Hauritz. YF should spend T-Shirt money on getting Johnsons Mrs to have another fight in the press with him Mum and then he will spray it all over the shop and Bingo we win the series.

Wow, that's the kind of post length AWB would be proud of!

3 or 4 years and Corey Anderson or Harry Boam could also be considered.

Id put Boam a bit further down the line than I would Anderson but yeah agree.

Good points bopman. I think a lot of it comes down to the balance of the team in terms of experience and youth. We were a much stronger team when Flemming and co were there (around the early 2000's).

I have read Nathan Astle's book and you get a good idea of his and Flems views on the John Bracewell situation as well.

As for the rookies, I think it is far to early to tell how far they will go. I think Boam, Anderson, Doug Bracewell and Boult are all struggling at first class level. Kane Williamson is slightly ahead but that is not to say he should be considered - going back to the whole 'step up' thing again. I believe he will get there but they all have a lot of hard work ahead of them and should not be rushed in like Southee was and like Boult almost was. That was a joke.TopLeft072009-11-30 23:31:41

maybe we could get some young guys to go play state cricket in aussie? though they wouldnt be to keen on our young guys taking up their own rookies chances to develop.

yea, without ryder the team is a bit unbalanced in that we have to have fulton, we won in spite of him really. Has he spoken out about why he didnt refer his dismissal?

im happy to see flynn stay, but yea the idea of bringing sinclair back just doesnt sit easy with me, given his last few recalls

did papps ever get enough chances? he got injured then was no good?

overall, im glad im not a selector

To be honest, both of them. Neither is the answer, but at least Fulton's just a stop-gap until Ryder gets fit, so can live with it for now.

I would take Vincent at 5 or 6 in a heartbeat. In fact I would probably take Hamish Marshall at 5 or 6 ahead of Fulton, even Elliot.

Looking into getting a 5 day pass, but it's unlikely I'll be there on Saturday, and you never know with the Blackcaps, it could be a three dayer very easily.

48 bucks for a 5-day pass aye? That is magic value, especially considering the last session starts at 5, meaning even if you work you can get in at least the last session on Thursday/Friday

I guesse the only positive from that is that its not his back again, hopfully he recovers well and quickly. It sounds like they are being very positive and precautionary about it anyway.

Yes intereting point as to who comes in now, Southee is the obvious but does Tuffey deserve a chance? Whats the basin pitch like? Patel if taking turn at all?

Tuffey is already in the squad, so will probably play. Southee will probably come in to fill Bonds place.

Can't see Patel coming in with the amount of rain forecast.  Would expect Tuffey to play.

over 16 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
If it is going to be green and overcast for most of the game I would pretty seriously think of Southee ahead of Tuffey, but with DT having been in the squad I would expect to see him get a run. His extra bounce could be a worry for the Pakistanis

At least with Tuffey we're guaranteed a wicket in the first over.

ah no..I remember him for the "milkshake + two female tourists + video camera" scandal as much as anything else that had anything to do with the end of his career. Big ups to him for the come back though.

As for Bond's injury, I'm gutted. Really wanted to see him playing at basin this week. They won't select Jeets for a number of reasons. The were advised to select him against India last year on a deck suited to him and they still didn't. I'd go with Southee personally. He will be keen to show some energy and make a big come back to test cricket after that debut vs the poms.

Good to see bond back and looking forward to seeing him play at the basin next week. I'm just really hoping for 5 days of glorious sunshine, although it's not lookiing dood...
Thu 3 Rain. Southeasterlies. Fri 4 Showers with easterlies. Sat 5 Showers with little wind. Sun 6 Fine. Northerlies. Mon 7 Partly cloudy with northerlies.

Thu 3     Showers clearing and fine spells increasing. Southerlies easing.
Fri 4     Fine and cloudy periods. Southerlies dying out and northerlies developing.
Sat 5    Fine and cloudy periods. Northerlies picking up.
Sun 6     Rain. Northwesterlies.
Mon 7    Showers. Northwesterlies.

Slight change but still not looking like 5 days of cricket. Forecast is from metconnect.co.nz. However metvuw.co.nz tends to be more accurate and although it is different, it still predicts rain. Bugger.

Another slight change in www.metconnect.co.nz's forecast for the better. The more reliable www.metvuw.com has also changed for the better, showing almost all 5 days to be fine, except for some possible showers Sunday evening. Now the only concern is drying the outfield. The amount of rain that has been + the amount forecast for tomorrow is huge. Worst case might be a late start on Thursday but we will see.

Well when you give Bondy 49 overs in his first test back what do you expect. Hes overworked and he did the most work of all the NZ bowlers
Permalink Permalink

To right. I think having only three seamers was a bit rough. Our all rounder - Elliot - isn't really an all rounder when he only bowls 2 overs. If we had a genuine all rounder, then it would be fine to play just the three seamers. That one test win has come at a huge cost.

Vettori is an allrounder ?

Or do you mean an allrounder who is a seamer ?

Who are the seamer allrounders in the country ? Apart from Oram.
