Looking at the HRV cup and potential finalists

at the mo its

Otago 20 (4 wins, 2 NRs)
CD 20 (5 wins)
Auck 16 (4 wins)
ND 16 (4 wins)
Welly 8 (1 win 2 NRs)
Canty 4 (1 win)

In terms of the finals that means 4 teams, two spots

Last three rounds

Aucks vs ND
Otago vs Canty
Welly vs CD

Canty vs Auck
Otago vs CD
Welly vs ND

Aucks vs Otago
Canty vs Welly
ND vs CD

Assuming that no furher matches get rained of

on form

Otago beat Canty
CD beat welly
ND or Aucks either way, going to say ND because of a more rounded lineup and dishan must be due for a big score

Aucks beat Canty
ND beat Welly
CD or Otago too close to call, leaning toward Otago on home patch

Going into the last round that'll leave it at

Otago 28
CD 24
Auck 20
ND 24
Welly 8
Canty 4

Last round
Aucks vs Otago
Canty vs Welly
ND vs CD

Welly to beat Canty

That leaves Otago with a secure final with CD vs ND for the other spot.
Hypothetically if (God forbid) Auckland beat Otago and a result occurs in the other match there will be two teams locked on 28 points pushing it to net run rate (currently Otago top, then Auckland, ND ,CD)

However if Otago beat Auckland they secure a home fianal with the winner of CD vs ND to decide who joins them in the final, which this year after last years washout has a reserve day.

However if CD get up over Otago they will be virtually safe in a final spot with ND and Otago going into the last round, both on 24 pts. If both of them win there will be three on 28 sending it to net run rate so in all prob based on current NRR's an Otago v ND final.

But according to my predictions Otago to beat CD and Auckland and CD to beat ND giving a Uni Oval Otago vs Central Final.

EDIT: fixing calcuations.

For the sake of NZ cricket I hope CD win it, they could put on a pretty decent show at the Champions League. Though in saying that I thoght Otago were going to also

In fairness to Otago, they were drawn with the favourite and the third favourite. Not saying they played well, because they've played better, but they got a tough draw.

In saying that though on paper they still had the side to compete, batting line up was all international apart from Hamish Rutherford. NZ T20 quick, NZ spinner and a guy that will play for NZ in the next 2 or 3 years. Yeah they got tough teams but they were still good enough to compete.

completly agree, they had the side and they played poorly in india compared to how they played when they cruised to the NZ title

And well done Indian gazzillionares for not wasting money on that cheating c**ty f**kwit Haddin. Some big names going unsold, Swann, Afridi, Haddin and Kaif all not taken. So far only Pollard, Parnell and Bond have been taken

Are they not going for any Paki's because it's an Indian League...? Anti-Pakistan sentiment? Or just scared they are secret terrorists?

Anyone else agree the IPL auctions are a joke? Player's get over-priced as these Indians don't want to lose out to each other. Can't believe that Vincent didn't go under the hammer and why the hell did no one want Guptill?wellyphoenixfan2010-01-19 23:39:32

Umar Akmal is probably better than both of them and didn't get bought either. Haddin has pretty good too... It's a tactical battle though. Probably better system than just a few rich clubs being able to buy whoever they want all the time....

I think Akmal's decision was more political than talent-based. Also Guptill in one-dayers I would disagree with, he was in the ICC One-day team too.wellyphoenixfan2010-01-19 23:52:25

Afridi was player of tournament at World T20 Cup last year, a lot of it seems to be ego in that they dont like losing to each other (the owners) but pretty clear today teams were after fast bowlers and that was about it. Though in saying that I though Mohammen Amer was around the auction somewhere and someone Deccan i think payed 600odd for Kemar Roach.

The Pakistani thing is very interesting, wealthy wealthy Indians I imagine would be pretty nationalistic but they also like to win so why you woulnd't put politics aside and just pick the best players. I think more will be heard of that.

The best auction will be next year when all contracts are up and the circus really will come back to town

cant believe umar akmal didnt get picked, i mean he showed enough in the tests to suggest he could excell at scoring quickley but i guess there are more politics to it than we know

You've got to look at test/tour schedules as well. Bond was available for most of the tournament as he is retired from tests. Haven't looked at it, but perhaps Pakistan have an international series over some/most/all of the IPL period. (Although this seems unlikely.)

No point bidding on players you can't actually use. Possibly why Guptill wasn't even in the reckoning.aitkenmike2010-01-22 01:15:16

from an otago pt of view rain in wellington wouldn't be the worest thing in the world, provided it clears down here like its meant too and we get 4 pts

From CDs point of view it doesn't really matter if it rains or not as we're going to whoop Otago.

hmm, Should I head down to the basin or is it going to start raining soon.

disaappointing result @ the uni oval, but very pleasing result at the basin

Otago dominated right up until the last 8 overs where Shannan Stewart and Craig McMillian took control. Fortunately centrals lost means a still a real chance of top spot and home final.

The situation

Otago 20 (4 wins, 2 NRs)
CD 20 (5 wins)
Auck 20 (5 wins)
ND 16 (4 wins)
Welly 12 (2 wins 2 NRs)
Canty 8 (2 wins)

Last two rounds

Canty vs Auck
Otago vs CD
Welly vs ND

Aucks vs Otago
Canty vs Welly
ND vs CD

Assuming that no further matches get rained of

Aucks beat Canty (although Cantys got a solid batting unit)
ND beat Welly
CD or Otago too close to call

Going into the last round that'll leave it at

Otago 20/4
CD 20/4
Auck 24
ND 20
Welly 12
Canty 8

Last round
Aucks vs Otago
Canty vs Welly
ND vs CD

Welly to beat Canty

If Otago beat Central, they play Auckland who will proably have beaten Canty, the winner with a home final, the loser in risk of been knocked out by the winner of ND vs CD, as it goes to NET Run rate for a tie.

If CD beat Otago it gets a tad more confusing.
The table will be as follows going into the last round,
Otago 20
CD 24
Auck 24
ND 20
Welly 8
Canty 4
Obviously not in that order,

That will leave CD and Auckland playing ND and Otago respectively with a win a gurantee of a final spot at least with hosting rights if the other loses or hosting rights if ahead on NRR. However if one of OTAGO/ND win they will be level with the loser which will send it to NRR to decide who plays the winner of the other game. If both Otago and ND win there will be four way tie on 24 with the final spots and thier hosting rights decided by NRR.

Currently NRRs are as follows,
Auckland 0.562
Otago 0.506
ND 0.300
CD 0.213

For it to be a four way tie Otago would beat Auckalnd enhancing thier own NRR and reducing Aucklands. The other two teams NRRs are too far of to be challenging.
Therefore in the event of four way tie the final would almost certainly be Auckland vs Otago,  hosting rights dependant on the size of the Otago win.

Ok, time for my dumbass question of the day. I just finished watching the U19 Quarter Final between India and Pakistan. When Simon Doull interviewed several of the players afterwards they had Wasim Akram translate for them. My question is, how come they were able to understand the question in English but couldn't give an answer in English? Surely if they knew what Doull was saying they know how to respond.

Three for me, and two for them.

You get people that have learnt enough English to basically understand what people are saying, but not able to actual speak it that well. They'd still be able to speak English to some extent, but seemingly not well enough to talk on tv. I've seen an English speaking person do the same thing when being interviewed in French.

They may not be able to explain the intricacies of the lbw rule in English, but they'd be able to ask directions to the curry shop.

This is right. Its one thing to be able to understand what people are saying, but another to be able to formulate your thoughts and express them trying to explain things and answer questions.
