Not as impressive as Imran Kahn blowing up his bed like one of those Pakistani marquees.

NZ A to get a new coach very soon. Quite a fast tracked coaching promotion, mostly done age group provincial so far but ex-test and ODI player must count for a bit...

Harmon is rather mistaken if he thinks the Basin would only draw 7,500 for an ODI. The supposed capacity is 11,000 and it has had that many in on several occasions. Besides, there has been discussion about adding capacity with another stand on the Cambridge/Kent Terrace side of the ground for years. Through the whole Petone saga I believed that adjusting the existing venues in town would have been a better option for the region as a whole.

Thank God for that.  Watching cricket at the stadium is just awful.

The irony is not lost. the stadium design was chosen for the very reason - cricket. Teh Black Craps were expected to be be really good in the mid 90's till now and that never happened so after three years or so, the numbers attending dropped. They should have gone for the square with rounded corners in the first place.

Secondly, the basin could have had an extra seating upstairs bar for that stupid roof design. They should pull it down and build it properly and to be honest, rip down that old pathetic stand and extend the main stand to incorporate that whole area and a bit further along. I reckon you'd get another 5-7k in there if it was done properly.

Only thing is the capacity of the basin is not 11,000. They squeezed in 10,000 for the Christchurch earthquake relief game which had a large amount of people seated inside the pickets. I think sell outs for test matches are around 8,000-8,500. Take out the Museum Stand and it's even less. They need to bowl the Museum Stand and build some decent sort of seating there. I think the best bet to maximise the embankment capacity would be to build a retaining wall where the fence is and extend the banks back to there with a better (not as steep) angle. One problem with that is the trees would have to go and they are very protective of those. Not sure the stand at the Kent Terrace end will ever happen now if the flyover doesn't happen because that was the only way they were going to find funding for it. Most of the Basin facilities are run down, the place needs a lot of work and they struggle to keep on top of it so I don't know where they will find the funding for all of this. The lights have been out of reach in the past.

Flatten the members stand and that stupid roof, flatten the old stand and build a new two tier semi circle stand with 10,000 seats in it that goes from Cambridge terrace at one end across to Adelaide road end on the other side. You could then leave the embankment alone for those who want to stand and of course Sonny Shaw annoying the shark out of everyone whilst trying to be seen on TV.

I can't see them bowling the $450,000 practice facility behind the Cricket Wellington offices. Or ever finding that much coin to build anything that size to start with.

Sounds like the plan has changed. Won't be NZ A but another age group NZ Rep side, guessing U20 mens or women's team so not that exciting just now.

So McCullum has said something to Kerry Schwalger about Cairns and his match fixing and Schwalger has told Cairns. McCullum then fires Schwalger. Sound about right?

So...

If anyone is keen to swing the willow or the leather (kinky) this season, I've got both 2 Day and 1 Day teams looking for players in a full time, part time or ring in capacity. Drop me a line leigh@onslow.co.nz

What sort of level?

It's a mix. Everything from 3rd XI down to social. My team (4th XI plays one dayer and two dayer) and for example has a mix of very good players, people who picked it up late in life and some new college kids. The club is small (about 9 teams in all) but laid back and no ego issues with the top teams. We cater to all levels!

Yup, most the teams have a mixture. A friends team (one day game only) have ages from 25 - 55 I think and a good bunch of blokes. My team, the ages range from 16 - 45.

Its South Africa and I am still of the opinion that we are not a good team. If we beat this lot, THEN we have something to crow about. They are bloody good so that would be quite an achievement.

Was hoping for something better from Guptill as I really like him, but sadly he fell straight back into the same pattern as his previous stint - taking up a lot of balls at the top without turning the strike, then getting out for a low score.

Definitely more interested in how we will go against Pakistan.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Any idea why Taylor is out? Rest?

Brownlee looked good, Neesham undone by a cracking ball so not all bad on a slow paced pitch which would take some getting used to. This appraoch of Guptill's to be the anchor early on really doesn't help him when he gets out cheaply. I've always thought he was more of an Astle type batsman who is much better on attack rather than trying to stick around as the 70-80% strike rate guy.

Taylor has calf strain I think, Williamson something with his arm.

Be surprised if we make 180 at the moment.

Boo, Mills caught. 156/9, we definitely won't make 180.

I'm not watching this but is it fair to say we are getting dicked by an outstanding bowling attack or are we playing silly shots.

If we are playing silly shots then they need to learn the preservation of life is more important than striker rate and thats usually the cause of NZs demise. If its cause of an outstanding bowling attack, well there is nothing you can do about that.

I'm not watching myself either, only listening and skimming stats, my uneducated guess is leaning me to think it is the bowling attack is just superior,

Ronchi and Boult doing well at the moment as far as this match goes.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Ronchi saying "fudge you South Africa"

Two sixes and a four in the over.

Upto 203/9

Amla's gone, and we are definitely in the game now.  97/4.  Get Duminy and/or de Villiers and SA has a long tail we can look to expose.

Well, it's not been an absolute thrashing as it was originally looking to be, Ronchi clearly saved the bacon and fried it too.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Shows you how well this was publisised, I didn't even know SA were in the country. Nice to see a small crowd attending a full on 50 over game. Even Crickets numbers have dropped. I knew they should have made Westpac square with rounded corners instead of oval to accomodate the Black Craps.

One day cricket has also been squeezed out by 20/20s. To be honest, the rise of 20/20 has made me realise how much more I like and appreciate test matches. 20/20 is an ugly, un-nuanced version of the game that lacks soul. ODIs are just a middle ground. But tests are where all the subtlety and drama is. People say " how can you watch something that goes for 5 days and can still be a draw" but it's precisely because it does go 5 days and can be a draw that I like it. The match has so many different phases and gears it shifts through and the strategies around pacing an innings or managing your bowlers and so on are fascinating.

-

Any way, rambled off topic a bit there but my point is that short versions of cricket just don't interest me like they used to. And I'm sure a lot of the people who used to enjoy ODIs now prioritise going to T20s because its more "exciting" as in more 6s and 4s and cheerleaders and fireworks. And then hipster snobs like myself won't go because we prioritise tests.
