The whole Crowe comeback thing is a joke. Ego maniac throwing himself back into the limelight. I reckon Crowe has been challenged by someone to put his money where his mouth is after all the criticism he has been giving the NZ players lately and he has decided to take it on because of that ego. He wants to be able to turn around and say "if I can do it at 49 what is wrong with our current crop?". Hope he get's rolled in club reserve grade.

Or maybe he just fancies a game every Saturday arvo again. Relax.

You must have missed all the hype buff. He has said that he wants to see if he can play first class cricket at 49, which translates to me as more that a social hit on the weekend. If you've met him you would know what he can be like, he's all about how good he was and how rubbish everyone else is.

True. Never met him but if that's the case then poor form. Oh well, at least he has his hair (is it his though?). And Lorraine Downs.

Wellington made a bit of a comeback after lunch with 19 year-old debutant Scott Kuggeleijn taking three quick wickets to kick off the CD collapse. Other than Ingram making 81 the rest of CD didn't fare too well. CD were 252 all out and Wellington will be disappointed having undone their good work in the field when they finished the day on 59 having lost three wickets.
Day two and Wellington well and truly recovered to hold a solid lead at stumps tonight. Both Stephen Murdoch and James Franklin passing three figures, 103 and 127 not out respectively. For Murdoch, a good start to his first contracted season and Franklin's chances of a spot on the Aussie tour were done no harm. Grant Elliot (63) and Luke Woodcock (50 n/o) also contributed to Wellington's total of 407/5, leading by 154 runs. New coach Jamie Siddons will be happy with his sides performance so far. Score card.

Trent Boult (24 7 48 5), Tim Southee (12 5 34 1) and Brent Arnel (24 6 54 2) bowled well in Whangarei with Boult and Southee at one stage having bowling figures of 13 13 2 and 8 8 1 respectively. I would expect both of these two to appear in the national side at some stage this summer. Southee looked to have a lighter bowling load in his first game back from injury. Auckland finished the day on a disappointing 250/5.
Southee and Boult carried on their form from yesterday to tear through the Auckland batting line up with Southee (9 2 23 3) and Boult (11 3 23 3) doing the bulk of the damage to restrict Auckland to only 139. ND have these two young bowlers to thank for being in the box seat, now needing just 264 from a possible 194 overs in their second innings to win the match. Score card.
Rob Nicol hit 16 fours and one six on his way to 107 off 203 balls to throw his name in the hat for a test spot after his recent good form in the one day side. Canterbury ended the day in control on 286/4.
Canterbury resumed today to take their total to 420/9 before declaring. The Canterbury top/middle order all contributing with starts. Neil Wagner and English international Steven Finn taking three wickets each. Otago walked off at stumps at 122/2, with youngster Mark Bracewell (41) and Neil Broom (14) at the crease. Score card.

Again Southee and Boult putting in performances which will be hard for the NZ selectors to ignore. Along with Franklin who had some good form in India last time he played in a test series.

Just saw a story on the news saying Bracewell will be going to Australia which is a good move IMO but if they are to include Trent Boult and Southee it means we have a very inexperienced pace attack. Surely McKay won't be there if Boult is and I would think Mills might be included along with Martin to balance the experience with the youth. TopLeft072011-11-08 18:55:29

I plan on going to many 4dayers this year, I love getting on down to Seddon. ND making a much better go in their 2nd innings, 145-3, game still in the balance though, need a good bat from the tail
Wellington pushed on this morning with Franklin making it to 162 and the highest individual score of the round so far. Luke Woodcock then combined with Harry Boam and while Woodcock (86 not out) held up his end, Boam smashed ten boundaries before Elliot waved his lads in. Boam finished on 55 from 35 balls and he brought up his fifty after just 32. 536/6d.

Central Districts have fought hard this afternoon to chip away at the deficit with Jamie how finishing the day on 128 not out. He had good support from youngster Ben Smith (68) and Matthew Sinclair (42 not out). CD are 267/ at stumps, still trailing by 16. Score card.

ND have these two young bowlers to thank for being in the box seat, now needing just 264 from a possible 194 overs in their second innings to win the match.
The game at Cobham Oval finished in a thrilling last session today. Auckland and ND can lay an early claim to one of the matches of the season despite the game finishing within three days of play. The seesawing game ended miraculously in the Aucklander's favour with ND needing just 40 runs with four wickets in hand at tea. In a game dominated by bowlers, Andre Andams took five second innings wickets and eleven in the match. He and leg spinner Bhupinder Singh will be the toast of the dressing room tonight after Singh took three big wickets.

The obvious lack of runs will be a concern for both teams going in to the second round. Score card.

Down south Mark Bracewell came agonisingly close to his maiden first class century, being dismissed just five short. What makes it more frustrating is, in just his third first class match, this was the second time he has been out in the 90s, (97, 95). Bracewell is sitting atop the scoring for Otago with all their recognised batsmen getting starts. Otago were 295/5 at stumps. They will be chasing the first innings points tomorrow in a match destined for a draw. Score card.

A lot of the usual suspects putting in good performances with a handful of youngsters also impressing.

The Northern derby was dominated by the ball while the Central and Southern derbies have had plenty of runs. I look forward to hearing about the pitch in Whangarei and whether it had a bearing on the low scores. Napier consistently produces road like batting tracks so it is unsurprising to see three centuries scored in three innings there. I can't say I feel like I'm missing out on much in Rangiora where the game has fizzed into a first-innings-points battle. TopLeft072011-11-09 20:39:55

Cheers, I'm glad someone's reading! been a long off season and am now a bit excited about the summer of cricket to come.

Unfortunately for us we're only getting two Plunket Shield matches at Basin this year because of the RWC and one game going to Karori Park. Will still be keeping a close eye on the fixtures around the place though with a keen eye on the Test selections. The one-dayers and T20's will keep me going though. Not to mention the ODI/IT20/Test matches!

Just hoping the weather does it's bit, it's no fun being a groundsmen when Wellington is at it's worst.

I don't think Ben Smith is a youngster by the way, pretty sure he's been around for years.

Anyways, Canterbury bowled out for 61 - just collapsed when trying to set a total, and then defnece didn't work either. Gonna be an unlikely Otago victory

Start of Decemeber I think. Aussies are in Africa for two tests which started last night, then back to Oz for us. Maybe starting around Dec 6 or 7.

He's 21, which to me qualifies. I did get one thing wrong though, "Mark Bracewell" is in fact Michael Bracewell, Mark is his father.

The interesting thing will if Boult can secure a spot in the team before then, what might happen. Will we end up with two left arm quicks in the team or will they battle for that spot...

They obviously fancy McKay as well.

Our fast bowlers stocks are looking alright at the moment if the promise that Bennet, Milne, Wagner and Boult show can be transformed into performance on the world stage.

That and the continued development of Tim.

Test bowling line-up of Boult, Milne, Wagner, Tim and Dan will do me just fine. Don't like Bennett, hate McKay. Out of the 5 listed I think Milne has the furtherest to go before getting a spot.

I still think Boult is better than McKay at this point in time, I am very anti-McKay :). Also, Luke Woodcock - why on earth are we playing him in limited overs but not in tests? To me, I'd love to see him given a go in tests, his limited overs ability is, well, limited
Permalink Permalink

Woody I think is being picked for limited overs because of his good ecomomy rate. He's there to tie down and end and frustrate the batsmen while they attack at the other. His average isn't great, he's not a huge wicket taker and that's kind of what you need your spinner to be in a test side. Jeets hasn't done himself any favours though, he's not quite what he use to be which is a shame. I'd have to say while there are plenty of good young pace bowlers coming through we really are struggling for spinning options which is a worry with Dan's career nearing it's end.

For me neither Woodcock or Jeets are test options so I have been pondering who is the 2nd spinner right now? Plenty of talk about Todd Astle. A few of the Indian guys floating around Auckland seem to go alright.
