How many test wicket keepers open around the world?

Fuck this stupid game

I can't think of any. Certainly not regularly. It just seems to demanding to keep for up to two days, then go straight out to bat.

Your right, forgot about Nicol, he would definitely be next cab off the rank to open.

ND declare with Kane on 284no.

top effort

What I liked about that innings is that his strike rate was around 70 odd. That's an ideal scoring rate in the long form, 2 runs every three balls. He's like that though, he can find runs even if the bowlers are keeping it tight.

Otago just had a massive collapse, all out for 63 to lose the game by an innings and seven runs. Terrible from them.

To be fair to McCullum, and I hate him opening as much as the next guy, he has averaged 50-odd in the last year opening. He just won our test player of the year at the awards.

We wouldn't be having this 1 less bowler/1 less batter if Baz just kept - at least a one-off? Word is that Boult is in the squad.

My team would be:

Baz
Gup
Kane
Taylor
Ryder
Brownlie
Dan
Tim
Braces
Tboult
Martin

Franklin
Nicol
Young

3 very odd games for Chch people to watch this week. A near triple-ton, Auckland making 381 with a 3rd highest score of 15, Guptill carrying his bat, Mason coming out of retirement with 6-20, Otago collapsing.

Find me a weirder week!

Why would McCullum keep for a one-off though? Whats so special about the 1st test that he shouldn't do it for the whole series? I don't understand the logic.

Just a one-off series, to stop us getting tonked. It won't happen though, I still think we need an extra bowler rather than an extra batsman.

Watling in 13 man squad just named

Did they only name 13?

McCullum
Guptil
Williamson

Boult

So comparing to my team above, basically Watling in for either Nicol or Franklin and only 13 picked.

So Watling gets in ahead of Franklin, Nicol and Mills I guess. Although I read they may consider adding another quick following the warm-up game. That would be McKay or Mills I guess. Of that 13 presumably Boult and Watling miss out.

What really bugs me is that the top 11 is genuinely a really good side and if they play like they could its a team that could give this Australian team a really really good run. Unfortunately they wont and we may be competitive for a day or two before getting humped.

Best case is we somehow hold on in Brisbane and then go to Hobart which is likely to be quite like NZ, play Vettori at 6 and four quicks. Hope like hell the ball swings and we won the toss and bowled first. Dare to dream I guess.

Why did Northern declare with KW on 284?

Three for me, and two for them.

Probably the same reason why the Cantabs declared with Ellis on 97, some people are stupid.

Slight different scenario, we had enough runs, needed more time to bowl them out, and were 9 down. Canterbury one seems indefensible though

So they couldn't let him slog for 10-15 mins to try get towards 300 then? Rubbish decision.

Three for me, and two for them.

Yeah I'm not in full agreement with it, but knowing Kane he probably didn't care, very modest, team player. 300 would have been nice though

I agree with this. At first I thought it was f**kin rude but after thinking about it, Kane is likely to have had a say in it. If he was given the option I guarantee he'd take what's best for the team at the time.

What an allrounder! Bowling well in tandem with Dan. Kane used to be quite the bowler, then went crap for a season and a half. Hopefully he can contribute for NZ.

I'd be happy for him to do some part time bowling as long as he consistently scores runs for us.

Paulinho has a theory that the reason Kane didn't bowl so much for us when he first came into the team (this is a theory he developed after watching him bowl v Zimbos) was that they weren't confident the ICC would allow his action so have been working on it.

Think back to the v the Basin here last year when we were trying to bowl them out on the last day when every man and his dog had a bowl. I think even Jesse bowled some off-breaks. Kane was fit because he was bowling the ball to mid-on any time he got it.

An interesting theory.

I've never heard anyone say he has a problem with his action until you did but I will ask around and see if I can find out more.

Pretty dull rain-effected round of Plunket Shield.

Permalink Permalink

Indeed. And the new scoring system is so dumb that a rain-affected match is bad for the teams ivolved. Also, 0 pts for a draw, 0 pts for first innings. Just bonuses. ND going alright in first dig v Otago, we may see some contrived finishes

Pretty sure they showed highlights of the 1st test on Comedy Central.

No. I think his keeping is just no where near the level of being a test keeper.

Had a whine in the piss you off thread, but two test series really get on my nerves.

About 10 years ago I used to complain that we only ever got 3 test series, and would wish for the 4 or 5 matches like the traditional powers.

Boy those were the days.

What's up with all the declarations. Some of them look a bit fishy. Also, what's up with Woodcock getting a hundred. I knew he could bat a bit, but that looks like a good knock.
