Three for me, and two for them.

Yeah but it was against Wellington. They're like the Black Caps - if anyone has a record, it was against them.

New Zealand cricket great Martin Crowe seriously considering a comeback at the age of 48?
Permalink Permalink
almost 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
A truly beautiful player - not just by NZ's low cricketing standards.  Absolutely world class.  Even at 48 - he'd would walk into our test team.

But could we handle the "Oh, my right hammy's gone, dunno whether I can play next week, therefore I'll keep the nation on tenterhooks again"?

Having. A. Laugh.

I don't know what his motives are or what he's trying to prove. Or if this is even true or just a filthy rumour. Anyone got a link?

From what they were saying on radiosport, he was inspired by Adam Parore climbing some mountain and Mark Richardson running marathons . He has been keeping fit and just wanted to do something similar. He will only be playing club cricket.
I don't see what the fuss is about. It would be no different if say Wynton Rufer said he's going to play for a local social club team.

I heard he wanted to add to his first class stats = not club cricket.

Tha man himself was just on Prime news saying he wanted to play competitive cricket and the first step was club cricket. I guess he'll have to see if he can handle spending a day in the field. I have no doubt he still has what it takes to bat.

indeed. As an ND fan, lets hope he gets some match practice by playing in some 4-day games :)

Would be very tough if true. Was the one of the best performers on the Indian tour with the bat.

Edit: He has missed out, even with, as a cricinfo article states, an average of 54.16 since he was recalled in December. On the list - Neil Broom. Crazy.

Elliot, Patel and Franklin missing out will hurt Wellington as they will have more people to fit into their contracts.aitkenmike2011-07-01 16:50:30

I think broom deserves a chance in the test arena, but I wouldn't have given him a contract. And Jimmy had 2 good innings' in India - since then - averages 23, with awful bowling thrown in. Although I assume he'll get another chance sometime

Agree on the bowling. I have said for about 4 years now that Franklin is not a one day bowler. If the ball isn't swinging he bowls pies. If his batting goes well enough that he can be a test 6 then his bowling is good enough to be a 4th seamer/3rd seamer with 2 spinners.

Yeah his bowling hasn't been great, but I'd still rather see him batting in any of our line ups ahead of Flynn or Rob Nicoll. Broom I think has potential, but hasn't set the world on fire with any of his previous chances in the black caps either.

It seems to be easier to get one of these contracts by staying out of the black caps and smashing a few runs in domestic cricket (as Franklin always does when he plays for Wgtn) than by actually playing in the team.

Pleased to see Flynny in there - when he got last played tests he was told to bat for time, play defensively, totally the player he isnt. Hopefully he's allowed to play his own game now - the one which got him a double century v Otago

I've had numerous conversations over the past couple of years with NZC staff who swore the best thing for NZC was for him to go. Hopefully onwards and upwards for NZC (just like that other sports team)

Teams for tour to Zimbabwe have been named, Bracewell and Brownlie make the test side, Aldridge, Nicol, Watling, McKay others included. Reece Young still in the test side, despite having Watling and McCullum, this really infuriates me :).
