the 40 hour week is a load of crap, most companies pay a 37.5 hour week, but in theory I'd expect most people workl a lot longer than that. IMO Unions are nothing but a waste of time....giving the slackers a voice and the ability to keep their jobs, when those of us who are able to negotiate due to actually doing their job well, can manage perfectly well without paying some levy to a faceless entity.

Unions only help slackers? Wow. Tell that to the striking miners in Western Australia that work 12-hour+ days in sh*t conditions and are facing fines of up to $25,000 each. I'm sure they'd appreciate your comments.

not talking about miners in australia.....my comments pertain heavily to my own experience in the corporate world...not mining/wharfies/sailors where I'm sure unions have made a vast difference to poor working conditions. Unions are fine for those industries, but int the corp world I find they are pretty useless.

My point was that historically, it was common for people to do 12 or 16 hour days. ButuUnions were influential in making the usual working week 40 odds hours long.
