Lacklustre Taranaki lucky to steal draw
By ROBIN MARTIN - Taranaki Daily News

CAMERON BURNELL/Taranaki Daily News
HEADS UP: Team Taranaki's Tomas Mosquera, right, leaps above Trent Watson, of Wellington United, to head the ball during the 1-1 draw at New Plymouth's Pukekura Park.
<!--story_features(_empty)--><!-- -normal_story_landing- --><!--start components/story/common_content-->

A headed goal from Tomas Mosquera saved Team Taranaki its blushes against an under-strength Wellington United in their Central League football clash at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth.

<!--why is this here? -reed-->

Trailing 1-0 with just five minutes left to run, substitute Brad Hickling beat his man on the left and sent in a cross, which muscular striker Mosquera forced past Jamie McKay in the Wellington goal to earn his side a draw.

The lacklustre Energyworks Taranaki performance confounded head coach Ian McGrath.

"I'm disappointed. I don't think I can dress that up any differently.

"Pleased that we salvaged a point, obviously, and the positive we can take from that is we are still unbeaten at home.

"But there is a real sense of disappointment and questioning in the dressing room in relation to why we let games develop first before we then decide to play."

United was missing six first-choice players but started the less inhibited of the two sides and made better use of the wide-open spaces of the Pukekura Park pitch.

Flame-haired Ben Fredrickson impressed on either flank and visiting skipper Trent Watson nullified much of Team Taranaki's aerial threat.

Meanwhile, the home side struggled to find Mark Bland at the point of its midfield diamond and took more than 30 minutes to fire a shot in anger.

By comparison United created several half chances in the first spell, the best of which fell to Sam Greene just before the break.

Taranaki lost keeper Mike Reive to injury at the break, but came out of the sheds with more urgency.

It had a gilt-edge chance early on through Nick Betteridge, who found the side netting with his shot and then, just minutes later, Taranaki found itself chasing the game.

United forced a corner that was half-cleared only for Fredrickson to fire in a shot from 25m, which was deflected past replacement keeper Graham Oliver in the Taranaki goal.

Sparked into life, Taranaki created one meaningful chance through Mosquera before McGrath looked to the bench after about 70 minutes bringing on Hickling and Tyson Brandt.

The change created more width and Hickling made the decisive break for the equaliser.

At the death, Betteridge had the chance to bag all three points for the home side which would have been a travesty for the visitors but after being put free in the box by Mosquera, the midfielder was denied by McKay at the near post.

TEAM TARANAKI 1 (T. Mosquera) WELLINGTON UNITED 1 (own goal). loadAd('300x250','STORYBODY',300,250);

Horror injury sees Peta in hospital
25.05.2009
CRAIG STEPHEN

Napier City Rovers Central League goalkeeper Shaun Peta has been admitted to Lower Hutt Hospital for surgery after a horror injury during a soccer match on Saturday.

The Eastern Institute of Technology student came off second best during a clash with an opposition player in the goalmouth in the first half at Bell Park with the Rovers trailing 2-nil before eventually losing the match 3-nil.

Team manager Tim Kilkolly told SportToday Peta smashed his eye socket, cheekbone and broke his nose after the collision when the opposition player's ``knee connected with Shaun's head'.

  ``He'll have some plastic surgery by Tuesday or Wednesday and, because of the severity of the injuries, he'll be out for the rest of the season,' said Kilkolly, clarifying there was no malicious intent from the opposition player as the pair chased a 50-50 ball.

Rovers were trailing 2-0 against Lower Hutt City and had seen Rainer Bauerfeind leave the field due to a recurrence of a groin injury when Peta received a brutal, albeit unintentional, blow to the head.

Rovers coach Matt Chandler looked on in horror as the sole goalkeeper in his squad lay stricken on the pitch, clearly in some difficulty. Almost 10 minutes later Peta was helped off.

Kilkolly said from Napier yesterday: ``Matt spoke to Shaun just after lunch today and he's holding up pretty well but it's been a pretty tough time for the young fellow.'

Peta had recently taken up a goalkeeping coaching stint to help out Hastings Boys' High School pupils.

In Saturday's match, defender Regan Cameron took over in goal and didn't have a great deal to do in the second half as Napier fought their way back. In fact, he looks as if he might be a handy wee stopper judging by how he handled what came his way, including a particularly dangerous attempt on goal.

Afterwards Chandler refused to let the twin injuries and the removal of Cameron from the defence become an excuse for the eventual 3-0 defeat.

``We didn't react well today. We didn't press them enough and we failed to stop them from playing,' was his frank assessment.

``I wouldn't say we were well beaten and that was never a 3-0 game but we didn't close them down.'

It's often said that the playing conditions are a great leveller but Hutt City had more drive and adjusted to the appalling conditions - not so much typical windy Wellington, but the Outer Hebrides on a bad day - far quicker than their foes, playing with what finesse was permissible on such a dire day.

The wind was so strong club officials spent most of the first half looking in adjacent roads and gardens for wayward balls. In the second half, those winds were joined by a downpour.

Kilkolly said: ``Matt couldn't even put down the cones and the ball bag was blown away during the warm-up session before the game.'

A great strike from Pedro Garcias within 20 minutes and a rebounded shot from veteran captain Phil Patterson, before Peta suffered his injury, put the home side in the ascendancy and Patterson added a third in the 78th minute.

Chandler was right, it wasn't a 3-0 game and Napier had chances, notably through fleet-footed Solomon Island striker Andrew Abba with a raking shot that went narrowly wide and Nick Dockary flashed a header past the post.

Now the coach has to sweat that the injuries to Peta and Bauerfeind won't hamper him too much with some crucial league games ahead.

Saw an opposition defender get similarly hit in one of our games a few years back when our striker tried to hurdle the guy's sliding tackle. Not a pretty sight.

Heard later that he needed a facial reconstruction.

Keeper appears to be a dangerous position all of a sudden. Oh well you go there you pay the price eventually and lucky if you can stay healthy. Back in the day they used to protect keepers.  Yet to see it.  Did you know: Botswana goalkeeper and captain Modiri Marumo became the first - and so far only - goalkeeper to be sent off during a penalty shoot-out in May 2003. Marumo was dimissed for punching his opposite number during a  Cup tie between Botswana and Malawi, after Marumo got a sporting pat on the shoulder. Malawi won 4-1 to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

Whadda mean. You've only got to stand 5 yards from a keeper at a corner and the ref will blow for some percieved infraction.

I agree. Barron should be facing a lengthy suspension.

< I agree. Barron should be facing a lengthy suspension. >

Do not know the ins or outs of that incident. The coach said he did not think it intentional.  But to cause that much damage and end a  guys season.  Well, I have seen penalties and red cards for a keeper tripping a striker and cause no damage whatsoever.  Even penalty against a keeper pushing over striker who happened to be innocently' standing on the keeper.  Yet to see a card for foul on keeper.

I think you missed 2ndBest's little joke.

He was referring to his own broken finger and the fact that he 'claims' it was (not) stopping an Andy Barron shot.

Don't really have anything at stake - not an Olympic fan or anything like that - just don't think Bubbles will lose to Rovers.
