Just had a look at Squads.

Anyone know who Jamie McMaster and Johnathan Pledger are in the Rapa Squad ?

Is McMaster the the same player who used to be at Leeds and is now playing in the NSW Premier League with Marconi ?

I don't know of a single top club or national league team that does not spend money on players.
The higher up, the bigger the spend e.g. Auckland City, Waitakari and Bay olympic.

Not sure that 'but they do it' is entirely justifiable in 'amateur' football.

I agree with you most clubs do compensate there players for playing.
It is understandable in National league as there is a greater demand on players time and there is also the finacial reward to a club that the O - League and World Club Championship can potentially bring.

As far as I know there is no prize money for winning the Northern or Central League.

Will be good for Rapa Football if they both are Local Lads.

Billy Scott (20 years-old) to captain Western Suburbs. Youngest ever full-time captain in the CPL apparently..

I can't see any local team struggling this season, with the player movements and new players coming into the region.

Maybe for Western Suburbs.
However not for the Central League.
I can think of one younger.
A Young Garry McDermott was Stop Out Captain in the 2008 season.
At the time he was 19 years of Age.

Yeah Wellington United definitely a little thin on the ground in terms of the number of recognisable players.
The will miss the quality experience players they have lost.

I heard that Clapham was going to Wairarapa a couple of weeks ago. Heard from someone who had also been approached, presumably the Clapham news was being used as a drawcard [unsuccessfully].

I agree that Phil should do what he likes with his money. I like the idea of a "dream team" and it seems, based on the opinions here, many people find the concept of certain interest. I hope they sign more and it gives the other clubs a target to knock off (done 4-1 by a non-spending Tawa last year- maybe Well Utd/Petone this year)

I think the real issue is Phil's sanity, he knows little about football (a rugby man by trade) so would need good players to cover his coaching limitations. Not a dig because i like him as a man and i admire his generosity to all football related matters and also to the Rapa community.

The fact remains there is not a single player in any central league squad that is worth more than $200 a week. They are not good enough to draw crowds willing to pay more than $10, they are not good enough to draw endorsement $$ so by definition they are not "worth" much at all. If they were they would not be playing football in this league.

However, they are worth that to Phil for whatever reason he desires, so let him buy.

It will all end one day soon for Wairarapa, likely in tears ,but I for one hope not.

Players are worth what someone is willing to pay...

However, the sanity of someone paying a NZ footballer to play in the Central League is a different story

Agreed.

Do enjoy watching the Central League though, there is always some excellent football mixed in with the odd minties moment.

Good luck to all starting this weekend.

Johno Pledger is Captain of Rathkeale Colleges 1st 11 that plays in Wellington College League
Jamie McMaster is relatively new and i think he is from Wai Col.

And i very much doubt the number 2 on the Wairarapa Squad list will be there as he was handed a 2 match suspension for violent conduct, for an incident after the Cap 4 game against Wainui on Friday

Their even a lot of players getting paid in the Capital premier league. I wonder how far down the leagues it goes?

Just heard Keinzley has agreed to sponsor Wairarapa Bush rugby for $50,000.00 per year for the next three yearsplus has signed tobecome the main sponsor of three senior local rugby clubs at $20,000.00 per year. NZ Rugby Union really chasing him.

Looks like anumber a number of you are going to get your wish and see the end of him.

Interesting zoro.

As we all know Phil has been doing this for a number of years now, and it has generated a lot of negativity amongst of sort of people within the game of Football. But at the end of the day, how he earns his money and spends his money is totally up to him.

He obviously had a really good business head on his shoulders as he wouldnt of been able to do what he has done, negative or not.

Do you think he would just throw his money at other sports, without first going through the business options and if there was a risk of losing it all, he would do it?

I very much doubt it.

Phil has always sponsored rugby clubs over that way. Bush sponsorship is new though. First step towards a multi-sport venue over there?

True Steelo. Also sponsored the Rathkeale College Cricket Academy, including training facilities.

The talk was to try and turn Howard Booth into that exactly. A multi sport set up. Maybe a Wairarapa United Sports Club, involving all different codes

Jamie McMaster is a Wai Col boy who has played for Wairarapa Federation teams over the past four-five years, good to see some local home grown talent making the way up through to the 2nd team. That should be four or five boys from that age group playing for the 2nds now. Good News.

I see the usual I wish I was still playing for Wairarapa United Gossip column has started, with notice of all suspensions aswell. Looking forward to the next issue.

I also totally agree with this.

I also dont care how Phil K spends his money thats his choice, but paying players in Central League almost what seems a proffesional full time salary is certainly insanity.

I think this doesn't really do much for football in general.

I think its something that CF or what ever should purhaps have a look at before purhaps things get out of hand and that would not be good for anybody.

As I said in my previous post I personally oppose any payment to any players in what is an [and I will say it again] AMATEUR competition.

Next we will get a Players Union who want payments for players right throughout the whole CF competition.

Heaven forbid but its a slippery slope.

I think you are getting a bit carried away there.
Keinzley spent a truckload on Akld players about 10 years ago in the Prem so its nothing new.

Points noted Feverish & 2ndBest but once somebody pays you to do a job, be it left back for a football team, you become some bodys comodity, no matter what the price.

You then get the situation where they can then dictate what you can and cant do, and I am sure that if you get an injury and are no further use, they drop you like a hot potato, no insurance nothing.

As I say its a slippery slope and for some clubs trying to keep up with the pack it could be a very harsh lesson if payments have been made, purhaps/probably not declared by either party, questions will start to be asked.

No keep it AMATUER in the true sense of the word, but then I suppose I'm just old time, but I make no apology for that, its a game for pleasure for most for this level and down, unless you are a true proffessional in the sport.

For better or worse thats my opinion.

not really sure what you are trying to say.  We are talking about 10-15K for players.  Players will have other jobs so not really an issue.

I don't think this will impact things, Phil has always been a very generous person with many things and his bank balance is far more healthy than some may imagine.

He has plenty!

I am like you Steelo, I wish i still played for Wairarapa United too mate. What with the seconds playing Cap 4, and the team I play for in Cap 3, there is a real incentive. And with you getting your team promoted to Cap 1? last year, you would want to still play for them. Yeah nah.
