Central League Promotion/Relegation Battle

Olympic comfortably the better team, but it wasn't a spanking and in patches Red Sox looked alright.  Don't forget Olympic have destroyed a few Central League teams this year.  They beat Wests by a comparable scoreline to the one they beat Red Sox by in a game that had just as much riding on it.

So I don't think Sox will be a cakewalk for Tawa who are a league below the Greeks.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I think that's an average thing to brag about

In reality, if i was Tawa I'd be happy the Sox are putting on a good show. Tawa were/are so overwhelming favourites, its a lot of pressure

B team- I dont think so. They had george, Mikey, Chaz, Jimmy, Churchy, Neonakis, Malucivic and there defenders which i'm not too sure of there names. So thats not there 2nd team

Its no longer a problem.

Stupid discussion. Just trying to make the point that we were still playing against a quality Olympic team. Well we were missing Louis Fenton. And sorry forgot about you Nick but I thought seeing Utting was in goal that he was a worthy replacement

Yea how did you get onto this?
Its a fair point that its a far better Olympic team with raf and robson in their tho.
Not sure Fenton would be a factor at all against olympic.

I think he'd be a factor against anyone - terrific young player.

No doubt he is a fantastic young talent, ive seen afew games this year and he really has stood out as one to watch, but that was in champs premier and not against the likes of olympics backline and midfield of which I dont think he would cause to many problems against just yet.

But as you guys say its not tawa v olympic its tawa vs macenvayl/redsocks.
Id definitly back tawa to get past one of those two teams although they are generally good battling style teams, well red socks anyway, dont know much about macenvayle, does anyone?  i think it will be the game against wellington united that will be a cracker.

Don't know how it got onto this but you can't compare Tawa to Olympic. Pre season at the Hilton means nothing at all. Olympic are in a class of there own at the moment and i wish them the best for Sundays big game.

Back to the topic!!!

Have seen Maycenvale and Red Sox play a few times this season and also Tawa. There won't be much in it, all three teams play to about the same standard. Would pick Red Sox to beat Maycenvale this weekend as they have a good home advantage and then it will come down to who wants it more out of Tawa and Red Sox...  My prediction Tawa, but wont be easy.

6-3 to Red Sox over Maycenvale today, so 10-6 on aggregate.

Red Sox v Tawa in Palmy next Saturday
Tawa v Red Sox at Endeavour on Saturday September 12

Tawa would have spanked maycenvale and should put red sox away - but red sox will be good enough that if Tawa have bad day and dont get the bounce of the ball it will be interesting.

Any word on Tawa having friendlies leading up to this game

Or more importantly Welly U and it's massive 5 week wait?thelastnomad2009-09-02 18:02:27

Yip, 1-0 in Hilton Petone but the Greeks got the points because KCU played 2 players who got sent off the week before. A bizarre result considering the seasons both teams have had.

Don't you play for marist? Thought you would have known about tonights game against WU when you posted that. Unless they've brought in a new keeper for Cap Prem next year already?

OK - MY STANDARD QUESTION - SO WHO IS FOR AUTOMATIC CL RELEGATION??

As explained in previous years, a CL team can win no games all season and still stay up. ie take the piss. This year Wellington "Titanic" United has won a grand total of ZERO games, yet could still stay up (even on pens).

I got fobbed off at last years CF meeting for whatever reason (mainly due to idiots). Surely this should be a concensus decision from all clubs - not just the CL incumbents.
(and no mentioning the word 'stability' please - because it makes no sense)

If the team who win the play-offs are not better than the team that came last in the CL, they should not replace them.  If WU get 6 points this season (I am sure that is not true, but I cannot be bothered checking) but still get past Tawa, they deserve to stay where they are.  If Tawa are not better than them, there is the possibility that they will only get 5 points the next season, making them more of a joke.

This is not a dig at Tawa - just using them as an example.

Jonesy, I couldn't disagree more.
The onlt way you should earn the right to stay in a league is not finish bottom.  Tawa shouldn't have to compete against Welly U, they aren't a Central League team yet, they haven't played at that level, and haven't had the opportunity to recruit Central League players.  They've earned the right to go up and they should (or whoever qualifies out of the playoff)

*sigh*

haven't we all already had this arguement in a pub somewhere in Wellington?  I put up a convincing arguement for keeping the play-off, but Feverish, JD and Marius won by sheer weight of numbers, bullying and (still unproven) spiking my drink when I was in the toilet.

KEEP THE PLAY-OFFS SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO LAUGH AT WHEN TEAMS LIKE PETONE (and Tawa in a few weeks) LOSE AFTER THEY HAVE PISSED THE LEAGUE.

rubbish frankie

if you finish last youve blown it and its someone else's turn. Good enough for the premiership and good enough for every other capital football grade. If you are the most successful side in your league you deserve to be rewarded and if you are the worst performing side in your league you deserve to punished.

A team in CL will always have the advantage of being able to attract better players who want to play in a higher league - so to determine promo/releg by a play off is not actually going to determine who is most capable of playing CL the following year. it doesnt prove anything (although I still think tawa will beat WU if they get past Red Sox)

Reward = opportunity to play off for Central League.
Punishment = risk of losing place in CL. Pretty black and white.

If it was to change I wouldn't be entirely against it. The teams will know all season that there is a danger of automatic relegation and it would probably make for some great games of football from the desperate bottom teams.

I don't think that a season's worth of effort is deserving of only a playoff place, nor a seasons worth of failure punishable merely by a playoff

Good as the season doesn't peter out.  Plus you don't have the farcial situation where welly U has 5 weeks to wait to play a playoff

football league play-offs over here are very successful, with even teams who finish 3rd in the league accepting that they may not go up as they deserve.

Also, this seems to have been missed - remember how funny it was when Petone lost the play-off?  Imagine how funny it will be if United beat Tawa?

Worth having for that potential of funny.

How many games in a row do you have to win to qualify for the world cup?

Palmy basically has to win 6 games to qualify for central league - a bit over the top
