Western Suburbs only beat Havelock North 2-1. Goalless at halftime but apparently the East Prem side held their own very respectably against a fairly strong Wests side.

Was at Northern vs Wanaka and honestly is should've been 4 or 5 nil to Northern. Some really good oppertunities but wouldn't pull the trigger. Either way a really good win. Otago and Canterbury don't meet up until R4 so we took out some good competition in the mean time, plus we were resting players for the Coastal game on Monday. Imagine it'll be Northern vs Royals in either R3 or R4 so that'll be interesting.

I watched some of the Seatoun v Upper Hutt game on the Iive stream - Upper Hutt were woeful and by all accounts were lucky that it went to extra time and penalties. They looked like the lower ranked team.

Onwards and upwards - looking forward to the next round in a couple of weeks. Does anyone know if it’s still being held on Wednesday? Or will they wait for the Nix v Island Bay game to be played first?

I'd imagine they will still do the draw, other countries do their cup draws before the last tie of some cup games.

Long list of games on today - what’s the pick of these? I’m not too familiar with the Northern sides.

Some tasty match ups and more potential cupsets on the way. I feel sorry for Miramar….. Olympic then Wests

Most likely cupsets I can see are:

Royals vs Mosgiel
Royals have struggled quite a bit this season though they have gotten two upset wins in the SL. Mosgiel meanwhile have been a solid side in the SPL for a few years now and currently sit 2nd. 2nd lowest SL vs 2nd highest SPL, could feasibly see that happening.

Seatoun vs Petone
Also possible since Seatoun just beat Upper Hutt City on penalties + they're at home

Northern vs Otago Uni
Least likely I'd say. They're sitting 3rd in the SPL but their only loss is to the current leaders Northern Hearts in Rd1. Northern still sits mid table in SL though so they're not really struggling which is why it's my least likely pick but you never know.

Part of me wants to back Ngaruwahia United again but they're away from home so I don't think they'll be able to breach the 2 league gap this time, though it would be pretty awesome if they did.

IBU win the last Round 2 game 3-2 AET, after the Nix came back from 2-0 down to make it 2-2 at halftime.

What are the predictions around the region’s for the cup this weekend??

Central Region:
There is one all Central League tie and 3 matches with Central League 2 teams playing Central League teams.

Seatoun v Petone
In the last round of the cup, Seatoun dispatched Upper Hutt on penalties. Meanwhile Petone took most of the 90 minutes to dispatch Greytown. Petone then went and lost to Upper Hutt 2-0 in the league last week. At home at Seatoun Park, this has cupset written all over it! Seatoun to win in normal time.

Palmerston North Marist v Napier City Rovers
PNM have found their form after a slow start to the season. Although even with home advantage I think the Napier squad will simply be too good! Napier to comfortably win this one.

Miramar v Wests
In this high profile Round 3 fixture, Wests will be hoping to replicate their league win against Miramar. Both teams are coming off tough league matches last weekend which ended in draws. I think this one will go the distance with Wests winning on penalties.

Island Bay v Stop Out
Stop Out will cause some problems but the strength of the Island Bay squad, at home, will prove to much for Stop Out. Island Bay to win in normal time.

I like to know others’ thoughts on games around the county - including those in central telling me I’m completely wrong!

Southern region
Only four games but some still some interesting ones

Ferrymead Bays vs Cashmere Technical
The two best clubs in the South Island at the moment and with Cashmere especially it's not even close. With Cashmere they were knocked out of the English Cup a bit ago so you could argue there's a chance, but if we're being honest it'll probably just be a Cashmere sweep.

Northern vs Otago Uni
Feels like a bit of layup for Northern to get a team from a lower division ahead of the round 4 but nothing is set in stone. Queens Park gave Royals some trouble last round so I suspect Uni will also cause some issues. Two cupset are on the table this round and I'd argue this is one of them, not that I'm backing Uni to win. Northern should get passed Uni this weekend

Dunedin City Royals vs Mosgiel
Probably the other game that's most likely to lead to a cupset. Royals have been struggling this season and Mosgiel have been one of the strongest SPL sides for the last few years. That said Royals recently got a win over Chch United so wouldn't get my hopes up for Mosgiel. Royals to move ahead.

Nomads United vs Nelson Suburbs
Both have been in some good form since the start of the season honestly, Nomads especially. It wasn't until Rd4 when Nomads pickeed up their first points of the season in a 3-2 win over Coastal. Nomads have been in better for though so I'll back them to win this.

After this the last four South Island teams will come together, so it will be interesting to see who converges between the remaining two Chirstchurch and Dunedin teams

And Cashmere go through. Honestly that was a tight game. Ferrymead kept equalising every time Cashmere pulled ahead, but unfortunately when you're always the follower you'll eventually fail to catch up. On a seperate note that is officially the most goals Cashmere have conceded in a single game all season, which speaks to how well they've been performing this year

Great cup game, love seeing the keeper up for the last free kicks and corners.

Tech must be up there nationally as favourites to go all the way.

Hope so but hard to say. South Island has definitely fallen behind the North Island quite a bit in recent years (Coastal last year could attest to that), so you never know. That said Cashmere haven't just been the best they've been trampling the best all season so you'd imagine they have more hope than other SI clubs

Just got home from the PN Marist - NCR game.  After watching the first half, I was convinced that PN was playing for penalties.  NCR eventually won 2 - 0 but even after scoring their first goal, PN didn't seem to be interested in chasing the win.  I got the distict impression (and I could be wrong) that PN was only trying to keep the score down.

Island Bay vs Stop Out was a surprising good match!

Island Bay were on the front foot early on and through most of the first half, bagged a couple of goals to go in 2-0 up at HT look like they were cruising, early in the second half it's 3-0 (double for their number 2 Nicolas Ball which seemed to be a pleasant surprise for many in the crowd!).

3-0 up against a second-tier side you'd think that's curtains and they'll roll on from here... except somehow they almost blew it. Stop Out found a goal from nothing with about 30 mins to go, gained a lot of energy from it, scored a very direct second goal (assist by the goalkeeper and brilliant volley from Campbell Webster!), and all of a sudden things got crazy. Late in the game on a corner there was a corner scramble where Stop Out must've had about 3 or 4 shots blocked from close range, and they genuinely could've taken it to extra time, but lost 3-2.

Good game IBU vs Stop Out.

Two goals were from Rhiley Bell (looks like an admin error), was his last game for the club as he heads off overseas.

Stop Out are such an aggressive club both on and off the pitch. I guess it kind of works for them but it’s an ugly watch.

Seatoun v Petone was great watch. Seatoun deservedly in front at half time, probably could have been 2-0 or 3-0. Two very good one on one saves by Stapleton in goal. Petone really struggled to play, caught between playing out and more direct. I don’t recall them having a genuine chance until they scored in the 70th minute.

Seatoun had two more excellent opportunities through Conor Boyd at the start of the second half, but when he was substituted (managing minutes I understand), the main theeat was gone and Petone got a little more on the front foot.

Overall, the game probably deserved extra-time. But fair play to Petone who took 70mins to get into the match. Seatoun definitely would not be out of place in the CL next season if they can make it there after two strong performances (albeit at home) against two decent CL sides.

On a side note, it was great to see a top ref from Mainland refereeing the game. It can get a bit stale in the region when you have the same refs multiple times a season.

Otago Uni vs Northern was very competitive and Uni kind of just got unlucky.

Early on Northern was granted a penalty which was saved by the keeper but it rebounded straight into Toby Orchiston who was able to sink it into the net. Later in the 28th minute Northern would be granted a free kick from about 10 meters out, which a uni player headed it into his own net granting Northern a 2-0 lead. Despite these early mistakes the keeper had a very solid game and stopped every open play shot Northern chucked at him. There was a good moment where he had a triple save which earned him a round of aplause from the Northern crowd. Uni would eventually get a goal off a corner header in the 88th minute but by that point it was too little too late.

Sam Cosgrove left Northern recently and this game feels like proof it'll be a struggle without him, but a win was found either way and revenge has been taken for 2024. This is the first time Northern has reached this stage of the cup since 1988, or 38 years ago. Next up it's either Cashmere, Nelson (Who just defeated Nomads 2-0) or Royals. Personally I would prefer either Royals or Nelson for Rd4, but there's an equal chance we get Cashmere which would be so cruel haha

Just coaches squealing and yapping. Pretty much harassed the ref all the way to their changing rooms.

I guess they felt aggrieved, just not how I expect coaches to behave

The Assistant Coach has form for side line behaviour which is a shame as he has  good coaching ability.
