NZF/AUCKLAND - Taupo AFC pulled off the biggest upset of the 81st Chatham Cups second round but their stunning 5-3 win over Northern Premier League Tauranga City United was overshadowed by a nine-goal epic between Fencibles and Mount Albert Grammar.
Taupo stunned a Tauranga City side two divisions above them but neither that, nor Bay League Te Pukes 5-4 upset win over Rotorua United, could compete with the drama and controversy unfolding at Fencibles Riverhills Park
Zane Christensens sixth minute penalty was saved as an early indication of the excitement to follow and after just 15 minutes of play Fencibles had a 2-1 lead with Norm Archery and Christensen both responding to Mark Withers opener within the space of 90 seconds.
Sean Gillham put Fencibles further ahead in the 22nd minute but in another burst of scoring Zane Sole and Jonathan Raj had the schoolboys level again within three minutes.
Second goals to Christensen and Raj sent the sides into halftime locked at 4-4, but the scoring dried up until Zane Sole grabbed the winner for MAGS seven minutes from time.
The drama didnt finish there with Fencibles missing a late chance to send the game to extra time and may yet continue with Fencibles planning to protest MAGS fielding a player sent off in the schoolboys sides previous match.
Elsewhere, current holders Central United eased into their defence with a 9-2 romp over Oratia United, while Glenfield Rovers and East Coast Bays also enjoyed lop-sided wins in the top half of the North Island.
In the South Island, the progress of first round giant killers Cashmere was halted by a 2-3 loss to fellow Christchurch Premier League side Avon, while the cup dreams of Timarus Northern Hearts and Invercargills Old Boys were crushed by 0-8 defeats to respective Southern Premier League giants Dunedin Technical and Caversham on Saturday.
Nelson Suburbs claimed another previous winners scalp with a 3-0 win over Woolston Technical who won the cup as Tech Old Boys to add to a round one derby win over Nelson United, while Dunedins Northern needed a penalty shootout to get past Otago University after a goalless stalemate.
In Wellington, Petone handed Central League neighbours Stop Out a 7-0 thrashing, while three-time winners Miramar had an easier-than-expected victory by the same scoreline over four-time champions Waterside-Karori.
It was a heartbreaking round for Manawatu teams as Palmerston North End and 2005 finalists Palmerston North Marist both lost five goal thrillers to Inglewood and Napier City Rovers respectively.
Tawas match against Wellington Olympic and (Wellington) Marists trip to Lower Hutt City were delayed a week due to inclement weather in the capital, but those sides will have the luxury of knowing their potential third round opponents when the draw is released on Wednesday.
