Yep, Nelson will only get stronger and Cashmere will be desperate to get their Canty players back too. I see both the Cashmere PDL and Div 1 teams all lost on the weekend.

As predicted FC51CK improved again and took the points off Cashmere. Looks like they're capable of challenging anyone at present but will need to secure as many points as possible pre Canty player return.

As for Billy Tuiloma's non/ transfer, maybe he hasn't paid his subs or returned his kit ha ha. Or more likely, Selwyn jumped the gun?

Results board on Mainland shows Cashmere Tech Div 1 side defeated Mid Canty 3 - nil and sit on top of the table so is the result incorrect.

Consideration should be given to the possibility of the Canty players not coming back to their clubs. With the growing chance of Canty making the O-League, and the fact that it may start before the NZFC from next year, there was talk that the Canty players would not play at all this winter season.

Which is fine by me as my club doesn't have any!

I stand corrected.

Can someone clarify dual registration bylaw rule for me? Player can play any football for school and any football for club?

I think it changes from Federation to Federation. Stand to be corrected but locally looks like not allowed for males if the school wants the player but not the case for females but the latter do not have schools playing on a Saturday.

For example last year Tane Gent had to play for his school and this year many of the Rangi girls playing in Saturday for Coastal, maybe something to do with Gareth Turnbull involved at both Rangi and Coastal and of course he is the NZ Secondary Schools coach as well.

Pretty sure Gareth used to coach Marian and has not had anything to do with Rangi. Most of the Rangi girls have come to Coastal this year altho some have gone to (or stayed with) Parklands.

This is the ideal formula. Play for your school on a Wednesday, play for your club on a Saturday. The sooner the schools GTF outta Saturday football the better.

the Rangi Girls at Coastal are with Red Gordon. I think Skippy helps out to at Rangi, it was the Chilean who went to Bays (Jose??)

yes. school = Wednesday. club = Saturday

it's sickening these Tory schools flogging our players when all development is by the club. A good example of how the welfare state works actually. Mind you Chch seems a fertile breeding ground for people concerned about what school their kid goes to more than anything else.

Lights coming back on for football in Christchurch

Seven Christchurch football clubs have netted a healthy cash injection for new equipment and the restoration of earthquake-damaged clubrooms and grounds from the sports international body FIFA.

Last year FIFA donated more than NZ$385,000 to the New Zealand Football Foundation specifically for allocation to earthquake-affected facilities in Christchurch. This week the recipients of this were named, with funds to be distributed as soon as final costs are known and repairs are underway.

The largest allocation is $250,000 to Mainland Football for a lighting project on a yet-to-be allocated Christchurch City Council field, enabling year-round flood lit development opportunities and games to accommodate burgeoning demand from players and their supporters.

CEO of Mainland Football, Mike Coggan, says players in the region have been severely impacted by the closure of QEII Park which was previously available year-round for development programmes and catch-up midweek football.

This year, demand on the remaining ASB Football Park is such that we cannot accommodate all of our development programmes, federation trials and catch up games.

ï¿½We are working closely with Christchurch City Council to get their support for a new facility which, with the lighting facilitated by FIFA, will mean players have access to a flood-lit ground to replace what QEII offered.

He says the other successful applications for the FIFA earthquake funds include Cashmere Technical, which will receive approximately $30,000 to repair the pitch at Whittington Avenue, one of the clubs six grounds affected; grants of $25,000 each to FC Twenty 11 and Mid Canterbury Football to repair damage to clubrooms; and $40,000 to Coastal Spirit towards its training ground flood lighting project at Linfield which will replace the completely destroyed Bexley Park. Three smaller grants to help with replacement of damaged equipment have also been made to Universities AFC, Burwood AFC and Mainland Football.

ï¿½Each of these projects will leave a lasting FIFA legacy for football in Christchurch and will be a permanent reminder of its assistance during what has been a difficult and stressful time for both the federation and its member clubs.

The New Zealand Football Foundation, established with part of the prize money from the All Whites' FIFA World Cup qualifying performance in South Africa in 2010, will be making further national distributions from its endowment fund in the next month. The NZFF awarded over $100,000 to 30 successful applicants in its inaugural grant round in October last year, with money going to a range of causes, including paying for expert coaching, improving facilities and talent development.

The player can play for their schools 1st XI (CBHS, Shirley, St Bedes, Burnside, St Andrews and Christs being the only 6 in saturday comp) and then go and play MPL or Div 1 for their club (I'm 99% sure the PDL aspect of it was undecided and probably included despite the time clash)

IMO the PDL league should start atleast 30 minutes later in the day, give all young players the chance to play youth footy and then come along to the PDL set up. Having it on at the same time as U/17s and as U/18s finishes is stupid. Move 13s to the midday kick off and have the 17s and 18s finished by approx 1215

SO, how about a player playing Nike Cup for a CLUB in February and now playing for a SCHOOL this winter league. I thought Nike Cup rule stated you had to play for that club that year. Or is there a loophole - ie a school is not a club?Stretford End2012-04-18 17:20:20

Maybe mainland shot itself in the foot by allowing all of the nelson transfers and decided it was now duty bound to make the transfers here.

The schools are clubs when it suits mainland, but lose the club status at other times.

Example: Boys high and Shirley wanted to play mens div 1 about 3-4 years ago, and mainland said "No, you're a school", yet they still pay club fees and have to follow the same rules the clubs do.

The only time the schools are not clubs is when the kids play for them and then go to play mens footy for their club (we're talking maybe 10 kids in the whole city). This scenario was only brought out as a result of the above example.

Such thoughtful discussions on the forum. We should run the joint.

Nike Cup rules have (unfortunately) never been enforced. I'd put the Nike Cup at the end of the year like a mega-knockout, but that's another story. The Nelson to Nelson thing was worse cos we got to watch it play out live on the transfers page. I love that transfers page.

We've got all sorts of strange things going on in kids football at the moment it must be a real challenge to get it under control. There are 13's playing 14's, 15's playing 17's and PDL, and girls 14's playing 18's and PDL. Combine that with 10 FTC's in one team, Nike Cup, School teams, PDL kicking off around the same time as 17's and 18's, 5 FTC trainings cancelled and it's only just started, plus kids transferring/scrambling for clubs in the week before kickoff. We're in good health!VimFuego2012-04-18 23:19:38

I know in Melbourne that the 'traditional rivals' Aussie Rules clash between Collingwood and Essendon always draws a MASSIVE crowd as everyone has a day off and morning remembrance services are over. The clubs approached the RSA and mark the occasion appropriately; donation gathered for RSA etc. Would be great to watch a game of footy next Wednesday afternoon. Come on Mainland marketing team!

Yes when we have games on ANZAC Day the games always started with a minutes silent as a mark of respect.

Regarding Vim's post about all the shenanigans and inconsistencies, issues et al...it all kicks off again in 36 hours. Kids can't wait. It's footy season again! Was great to play last weekend and even us 'Masters' were like a bunch of kids I reckon.

We couldn't run mainland...we're far too logical!

Heard a wee rumour a sub committee has been set up to discuss kids playing up in the age groups etc to try and get some bylaws put in place for next year.

I'm absolutely amping for the season to kick off, just hope its not a crappy wet season with cancellations every second week!

It will never happen because some kids simply need to play up for their own development. A return to the 2 year Premier divisions would help.

Tonight's result
Western 0 Cashmere Technical 0
Good point for Western who had to defend most of the game with Technical having the ball into the net twice but one ruled out for off side and the other for hand ball.

Saw the FC / United game and United had the best chance in the first half which ended scoreless. Hem Gelal scored a great solo goal just after the break and then failed to put the game away with United battling away and were rewarded when Ando headed home a freekick late in the game. Stu Bola then has a free header with the goal open but headed over in the final few minutes for FC.

Heard Bays had a player sent off in the first half, two yellows with Wiremu then scoring against the run of play from the penalty spot. Halswell continued to dominated after the break and finally levelled thru Steve McRae.

That 14D1 Nomads team is made up mainly of 13th age grade players, only four of last years 13A Div 1 players made the team.

At least 3 ex Academy players in that Nomads 14th grade team Gings & Poolmister; so no great surprise. Don't know how SBHS got a DIV 1 team; shouldn't you have to earn DIV 1 status? Couple more similar results and they'll be re-graded down.Stretford End2012-04-21 20:46:41

Looks like it was 24...not 23 haha, poor kids. even with a few academy kids the rugby score shows one team is in the wrong place, and I don't suspect its nomads. Next few weeks will show it.

Waimak A beat their B team 16-0 in the same comp. Surely if your A team beats your B team by that kinda margin you know your B team isn't Div 1 standard long before the season kicks off? or am I being far too logical here...

Reality is very few DIV 1 leagues have more than 4-5 teams that are truly competitive - and some have less. 15 Div 1 had 15-2 and a 7-0 result. Couple of similar wide-margin scores in 17 Div. It's week one but maybe the call for the 2 year band Premier leagues may get more traction with results like this.Stretford End2012-04-21 21:17:40

With all the draws so far this weekend if there is a winner in the Suburbs verses Coastal game they will move to the top of the table.

The big clash of the round 7, (the first third of the league then gone) wll be Bays verses Suburbs, with the other games Western vs. Halswell (Friday), Coastal vs. FC Twenty and ChCh United vs. Cashmere Technical.

different clubs have different philosophies around what age grade is 'correct'.

Last season 2 clubs sacrificed one age group to try to win an older D1 grade. Both clubs now have no side in the D1 grade they gave up on last year. The good players of that age have moved to other clubs or play up in age again.

I'm hopelessly compromised because I believe the rule should be uniform and in the corresponding age grade but my kids have always played up because it was a better footballing option.

hullo Nomads!

so who is getting developed by winning 24-0? Cashmere Tech also have very good 13D1 players up in 14's. Coastal and FC2011 have kept their guys in the 13's D1 and the 2 who would of made that team (Coastal) who are younger play in the 12's.(which is a considerably less strong side).

I talked to a Waimak organizer this week and he was saying it's ridiculous them having 2x 14D1 sides... results round 1 seem to confirm that.

Players should be in their corresponding age grade. Player development is club coaching and FTC.
The Saturday Game becomes useless and in fact harmful if the focus is we are in the winning team.  If we want a genuine D1 comp then clubs choosing to stack teams and sacrifice others needs to be looked at.

some blow outs in other grades D1 as well, I know a side that lost 1 - 18 in preseason lost 0 - 8 yesterday to a side with a sympathetic coach.

in the poor organization arena, we turned up to find no posts and no marked field... worse still two fields marked across the one we were supposed to play on. Unacceptable really. The home coach was pretty upset, more so when I said this equates to a default  as he has the far stronger team and his side should win D1. The issue of course becomes it's his boys that miss out on the win if I protest. sigh.
