CSOF has/is being scrapped and being replaced by the regional talent centres (RTC). more opportunities for more kids (and coaches). 2 seesions a week, inter and intra RTC games/tournaments etc.

Kids train and play with their club as well as with the RTC. Apparently clubs have/are being instructed to run trainings on mon & weds do RTC can operate on tues & thurs (or the other way around).

Think its the best solution, assuming the kids that were CSOF last year dont all go to the 1 club

So how do kids get into the SCOF? Is there an open trial?

big thumbs up to Mainland for the new system
I think it's got a lot of things better than the previous "In-house" set up.

it also ties in good with NZF so that accommodates games/tournaments/training with different regions. On paper it's looking quite promising.

Player selection did involve Mainland and Club FDO and Rep Coaches from 2011 program.
I assume this was across the differing grades.

invites have gone out asking for Parents/Players to confirm. It looks like it's each age group. Mainland FDO have more than one year to look after... this may mean mixed age training or they are overseeing what individual coaches (per age group) are doing.

once the player interest in confirmed I guess the dates are coordinated with the clubs to prevent the inevitable training time clashes. I was on the understanding it was 1 session /week not 2 Big Friendly Gings but I have not looked at all the age groups mate.

2011 rep coaches + a collective brains trust from around the clubs (think club FDOs) have put together ratings of most of the players who are there or there abouts.

Theres bound to be a few kids who should be there miss out (as always).

Pretty sure mainland has upped it to 2 per week, but more info *should* be out soonly...hopefully. Coaching appointments x14? made in a few weeks if my info is correct.

Here's some interesting news I found out last night. Not sure if it the School of Football, or something else Mainland run, but this weekly or twice weekly training for these kids is being expressly written as the way to make National Talent Centres and the NZ team. The price for this opportunity? $900.

2 sessions a week for say 30 weeks = $ 15 a sessions

different prices for different ages

youngest group is 12's ( I think)
which is $750 for 82 sessions

$9.20  per training

next level up is $825 and they get more sessions

included in the information pack is links to Funding Organizations with a reference letter.
Mainland have also indicated they have a designated help out fund too.

what's the cost in Auckland and Wellington? be surprized if it is cheaper
I don't know what costs are for other team sports codes but would consider this pricing as more affordable than Tennis

You guys are having a laugh right? If we make it a tenner per session, with a group of say 10-15, multiply by however many groups they have, Mainland are rolling in it.

I am all for more trainings for the elite, however not at that type of cost. With all the financial troubles some are facing in CHCH, $900 for children's sport may be out of reach. And this being the only way to make Canterbury and NZ? I doubt this would happen in rugby.

Go send ya kids to Ballet, Music or even Swimming and see how cheap they are !

I'm pretty sure the kids get a training kit and various other goodies too. To get the right coaches it does cost too.

Ideally it'd be free for the kids, but lets be realistic, we dont have a cash cow national team (like the all blacks) or a professional competition which also makes $$$ of tv rights etc (super 15/NPC). Until NZF can get these it will always be user pays

With clubs back in pre season training what player movements have been noted.
Duncan Reid moving from Western to Woolston/Cashmere is one doing the rounds. Western have a young keeper lined up from within the club to fill the spot.

Which clubs are going to splash the cash to try and keep up with Bays in the MPL?
How are Coastal doing in getting a keeper to replace Matt Thomas if he's still off to Australia?
Parklands will not have a team in Div1 as half of the 14 players at training during the week don't want to play Div1.

Has/Is the tech/cashmere merger still going ahead for this season? It all seems a bit quiet on the news front considering last I had heard they were in advanced discussions and it was a mere formality... (I do note they have been lumped together as a nike cup entry/interested party but thats hardly concrete)

Foal30 tells me they are called Port Hills Utd, however it didn't come from the horses mouth. Oh that's good.

I had heard that name or the very similar "Port Hills City" being thrown around. Suprised the oldies at woolston let the 'tech' bit get dropped

foal to clarify that what he said he was

there was a team in the U-12 comp at ASB for Nike Cup weekend that was called Port Hills that I assumed was a merged Cash/Tech.

merger has happened as I talked to the Tech 12D2 coach and 3 Cashmere 12/13 coaches .

Not that bad is it? Just a combination of the two names. No biggie. What happens to the Woolston side of things tho?

It just doesn't roll well off the tongue. I don't think I'll be saying "Can't wait to walk over Cashmere Technical this weekend". I don't imagine it will be too long before Technical gets dropped much like Spirit does.

Oooohhhh, that burns.

I have to say we used to call the old Woolston Tech, Tech, so if anything, you might find that it is the Cashmere part that is dropped.

Wow just checked the nike cup draw on MF site.

Not even a news story on the mainland site outlining the merger.

That is rather depressing/uninspiring. Port hills city had a much nicer ring. Any word on playing strip

They don't usually comment on the club side of things. That draw isn't correct anyways, I have a different one. Besides, it says Coastal play Nelson Suburbs twice, and that they play at 1,3,6 and 7 on the Sunday.

I'm sure they announced the last few that I remember (Coastal, FC2011 & Waimak spring to mind).

Sadly both Cashmere and Woolston have zero info on their websites.

On another note, surely its fair that Nelson gets beaten twice? means they get their moneys worth

Speaking of Nelson, what's happening up there Luis Garcia? I see that FC Nelson have a team in the Nike Cup, so must be keen, no Richmond, and Nelson Suburbs looking strong?

The Richmond situation has made football in Nelson very interesting.

Steve Bignall - coach of Richmond Athletic last year has now gone to FC Nelson (a merger of Nelson City, Nelson United, Nelson Metro).

But Nelson United are trying to pull the pin on the merger and play as their own team, much like last season.

Sounds like Steve Bignall is bringing a bunch of Richmond guys with him.

Joe Green, Jordan Yong and Ben Wright have all gone to Nelson Suburbs. Joe and Ben will coach the side. Suburbs relies heavily on youth, but like most years a lot of them have moved on after school to Wellington. Gagame Feni is coming back and rumour has it Mike Bothwell could be joining.

Richmond have now turned to youth and will hope to link up with Waimea College, Nelson Suburbs currently have Waimea Colleges three best players. They have kept player of the year Darryl Fenemor and two others from the first division team last year and Wesley Olea could be going to either one of the three.

The goal keeper for Suburbs could either be Coey Turipa or Eddie Newman.

Erik Panzer and Mark Johnston (both defenders for Canterbury United) will be with Nelson Suburbs again.

I've been a long time supporter of Western and by the sounds of it a lot of the lads are leaving. Does anyone know who is actually staying? And why everyone is leaving?

Western has been on the decline as a club for a few years IMO. The juniors have pretty much fallen away (I was a junior there back when they were in div 1 for most youth grades), the womens footy has pretty much gone too.

The lack of quality at the junior end of things makes it harder for the mens teams to function properly without huge recruitment.

Its a shame coz they're in a good geographic location with lots of potential.

Yes i agree that the club has been on the downslide in the last couple of years but the senior team has always performed reasonably well. I dont think the lack of a quality junior system has affected them too much.

Is the captain from last year staying? Heard he was in the US but will he be back? What about the other promising younger players?

Goss doing the rounds Western don't want/don't have players for a Div 1 team to put the extra teams in that league.

MPL may still go to 10 teams as I hear that two people at least, with positions in Canterbury Football [but not Nomads] are wanting to have ten teams with the Lincoln Academy entering a team. Someone must have more on this for it to get to me on the grape vine, maybe the Mainland meeting in a few weeks will have it on the agenda?
Leaving all this a bit late if Lincoln have decided to enter.

A few teams looking for a Goalkeeper if the calls around the city are anything to go by, Coastal, ChCh U, CashmereTech, Fc2011, Nomads all looking.

Yes goalkeepers are a little hard to come by.

Interesting that Western don't have the players, however it is only Div 1. That division is going from bad to worse with only Nomads and Mid Canty (I'm guessing) the keen ones to get promoted. If what you are saying is correct about a 10 team MPL, I'm not dead against it, however I am not sold on the 10th team being an academy of any sort. No way would I be happy with a Mainland academy, so why should this one be any different?

Draw already out for an eight team MPL so cannot see it changing at this late stage. APFA (Lincoln Academy) could not enter (and unlikely they would want to anyway), as they are not a club. Let's see the standard of the existing MPL improve before adding more team - quality before quanity.
