Hey Poolmister what happened at the MPL meeting? I see the PDL draw is on the Mainland site and it is good it is down to a 8 team reserve MPL league (with Nomads replacing Nelson's spot). I want to know who is in Div 1. The ones I know of are Nomads, Mid Canty, Nth Canty. Varsity and Selwyn maybe? Parklands definitely not.

That's not Nelson's second division club Wakefield is it?...

As in the same side that is no better than three Nelson Suburbs teams..

Good on them for entering though, probably got a slim chance against Richmond. But Nelson College could have easily gone in ahead of them.Luis Garcia2012-03-09 13:04:46

I know Burwood have got a mens team entering this year (first time in yonks), I don't know if its div 1 though. Pap-redwoods PDL from last year maybe moving to div 1?

Hi Vim I was not at the meeting. Goss doing the rounds at Coastal t/m on Thursday was the PDL is to be same as last year. Yes I see the draw has been done but only for 8 team league.
Div 1 completed with FC20, Tech and Western making the numbers to 8.

Surely not. PDL looks good as an 8 team as it means it is more of a reserve team format rather than what happened last year with the multitude of almost first teams from the lower clubs.

I still can't work out the 8 teams from Div 1. Nomads, Mid Canty, Nth Canty, Varsity, Selwyn, FC20, Tech, Western? The first 3 the only real challengers to MPL?

Yes Western defeated Bays 6 - 1, I think it was 2 - 1 at the break so Western and Halswell into the Final and Bays and Cashmere Technical to battle it out for 3rd and 4th place.

Consistency please.
1. Mainland PDL league - 7 teams are named as follows: CLUB NAME PDL.
FC2011 (so last year don't you think?) are named FC2011 DIV 1.
WTF? Do they have another 'Development" PDL team (which is the rumour I've heard).
2. I assume the Woolston Technical sides entered at MPL, PDL and Womens are actually Ca$hTech now?Stretford End2012-03-12 15:04:21

Maybe it's just that the names of the teams for the competition run by an outside company are still the same as last year. Perhaps they are changing it shortly? I dunno, doesn't make a lot of sense but don't think it can be that sinister, no way can they have a Div 1 team in the PDL league, everyone should abide by the under 23 rules. (or whatever it is)

I agree Vim, suspect its an admin error.

Any word on whats happening regarding cash-tech and the junior grades?

its meant to be 1 div 1 team per club per age group, but there is precidence from the FC merger where for 1 year they could have 2 if the old clubs had teams the previous year.

I sincerely hope not. Pretty sure Coastal was told they weren't allowed, and it's just one of those things when you merge really. When has there been a precedence? I've never seen FC2011 with two teams in a top div. They did have 3 in Mens Div 2 last year tho I think...

Pretty sure FC20 were told that if their Junior DIV2 side won DIV2 they could then have a 2nd DIV 1 team.

My mail is that Cashmere Juniors is a mess.

Coastal were not allowed 2 teams in Div 1. Which was the rule so far enough.

However last season (2011) some clubs did have 2  sides in Div 1. It wasn't just FC2011, but was after all divisions were 'rejigged'.

Cashmere - Tech merger does seem to have a couple of issues in the juniors. Some of it is predictable, ie: 1 coach from each club wanting to be D1 coach can't fit.

maybe my mind is letting go in regards to FC, did remember its discussion at a pre merger delegates meeting many moons ago.

I too have heard ca$htech is a mess. seniors pissed off with Halligan's boys moving in and juniors missing the top team in their age group for younger players who aren't better than them.

Had a quick look through last years results and the only time 2 teams from one club are in Div 1 is in girls 18th PDL and 11th boys Div 1 (where FC2011 B team got promoted after winning Div 2 halfway through the year)

I say tough luck. Rules are one team in Div 1 per club, and it should be something they had considered when merging. Coastal were told no, so what's good the goose.

It will cause a massive stink as there are plenty of occurrences of Tech and Cashmere both in Div 1.

I guess it opens the door up to the smaller clubs (parklands, pap redwood etc) to potentially get a div 1 slot...also potentially stops alot of fighting with schools at 14th & 15th grades over a space in those div 1 comps

Results from tonights pre-season tournament, give us comments on how you think this may reflect the season. Obviously no Nelson to compare against. Coastal beat Nomads 3-2 and Chch Utd beat FC 2011 3-1.

1st and 2nd. Western and Halswell
3rd and 4th. Woolston and Bays
5th and 6th. Coastal and Chch Utd
7th and 8th. FC2011 and Nomads

I guess the big question is where are the canty united first and youth players all going? (none have been released yet?)

Western will go ok, as will Tech, Bays and Halswell. Coastal will get better as season goes on, FC and Utd will struggle. FC my pick for wooden spoon. Nelson top 3.

6 senior players with Bays, so they may struggle until then, could cost them the title. Most of the youth going to Tech.

There may be a request to the clubs for some players to have a 4 week stand down at the completion of the ASB premiership and another 4 weeks prior to the start of training for the next premiership. Could save Bays a fortune as they are splashing the cash again this year.

4 week stand down after a 14 game competition? Not quite sure on the point of that. Nothing better than game-time for training for a season either.

Could be 16 games don't forget. Stats show that the players who have now completed 3 or more back to back seasons are the ones suffering the most injuries. They are also the ones showing a drop in form.

Will ceretainly be sixteen games, as already in the semi's  and hopefully seventeen if we make the Grand Final, also there was the 3 White Ribbon Cup games as well

If Dragons make OCL will squad players be released back to winter clubs?
Pre season training for dragons 2013 comp to start in late June or first week July?
If word at drinks at Robbies is correct the above is on Keith's wish/want list.
Anyone else heard this?

Also heard that if we do make the OCL cut then could be pre-season games on the cards, maybe off-shore.

There is also serious talk from NZ Football that the O League in 2013 may be played outside the ASB Premiership, so this would allow for a 21 round ASB Prem, and not the stop/start nature of the current sumner season.

O League would be played during the start of our winter season, this may be an advantage to the two NZ teams, but if the ASB is increased I can see the Dragons management trying to insure all players have a good break or maybe not even play over the coming winter.

Nelson Suburbs beat FC Nelson 8 or 9-0 in a pre-season today. Ben Wright looked particularly impressive as did Mike Bothwell. Ross McPhie and Matthew Elliott were other standouts.Luis Garcia2012-03-17 18:51:09

Love the FC name - what was the game like? Could make 90210 odds on for the wooden spoon already?
Coastal v Utd was fairly random, Coastal all over Utd in first 20 and could have been 2 goals up only to get caught with some sloppy defending to go 1 behind. Went 2 down soon after then got back in the game with a well constructed effort to go into the sheds 2 - 1 down (at least I think that was the half time score). Utd scored a very good goal after Coastal left back completely missed the ball at the top of the box allowing a good cross that Chris Anderson got on the end of with a bullet header. From then on it was pretty much end to end stuff, with Coastal playing the better of the football as they worked their way to what should have been a much more comfortable win, only thing keeping Utd interested some average defending. Ryan Faichnie POD, in everything and playing very well, not far off being back to his best. it will be interesting to see how he and Welbourn develop their burgeoning relationship as the season progresses but can Coastal keep the goals out at the back?
Bays v Tech was pretty woeful, fair amount of long ball stuff interspersed with some mediocre passing and poor first touches from both sides, left at half time bored to tears. Bays will be desperate to get their 6 Dragons on board as soon as possible.
Didn't see the final, any match reports? surprised at the result, thought it would be a lot closer than that with possibly Western sneaking it by the odd goal.

Didn't see the game but reports this morning being Nomads could and should have had more. Not bad with 3 of the Div1 starting 11 away and a B Snelling [Nomads POY 2010] having his first few minutes on the park in almost a year.

Coastal v Christchurch Utd can do it again next Friday night to get the MPL up and running.

I heard that the final was closer than the final score would indicate will Halswell scoring twice late in the game.

Halswell had the better of the first half and deserved their 1-0 half-time lead although most of their chances were long range efforts. Second half Western had a few good chances to get back level before a bad mistake at the back gifted Halswell a second. Western finally got a goal back with about 10mins remaining a but with pushing people forward left gaps at the back and Halswell scored 2 in the last couple of minutes to secure victory. Overall Western didn't play well enough to win the game but 4-1 probably didn't reflect the game overall.

Well done to Halswell who desreved to win, better team on the day.

Western need to try and stop the goals going in, although there is plenty of goals in the team. In the preseason tournament Westerns games have averaged almost 5 goals a game, at least ur guaranteed goals when watching Western!
