Mainland Premier League (Part 1)

Too scared to play them!  Tis a sad state when top grade football is defaulted. I remember reading about big fines that could be handed out if a premier game is defaulted. I note that the other two Western Women's teams still managed to play today, so what was it then? Can't be unavailability of players.

Finals day for the lower leagues this coming Saturday. Halswell will be playing in the Pres A final (again), just saying.

FC Nelson Sprig & Fern beat FC Nelson Fuji Xerox 4-1 to move on step closer to obtaining the Nelson Pine Industries first division. Ant Sonneman, Heyden Nunn, David Goncales Maciel and Henry Fa'arado scored the goals for FC Nelson S&F while Kerry Eggers scored for FC Nelson FX. FC Nelson S&F now three points clear with a +15 goal differencial going into the final three rounds. Even if S&F somehow lose the title from here, FC Nelson will still be the club contesting MPL promotion as Fuji Xerox is the only other side that can catch them from here. However, I'm not sure if it's been confirmed that the club will chase promotion this season.

FC Nelson S&F are coached by former Richmond Athletic coach Steve Bignall and manager Rick Gower while a handful of the team also came from Richmond. Henry is absolute quality. Hope they do go for promotion, but it may be a year too early.

re: Ray's comments on the U-17's

Football South have a right to send their players up. As does the West Coast or whoever. Their guys should get a crack too and we only know they are not up to it after viewing them??

And the U-14 Football South Girls were arguably 'better' than Mainland's... So if the selectors cannot view in 1 place it's a hard call.

Parents paying... nature of any "high-perfomance" or academy set up. Whatever sport Mum and Dad will be paying. Is finance directly prohibiting players attending FTC? IMO no, but some parents did choose to not particapte for non-football reasons. Whether this means their kids do not make the cut for higher honours....

Does this get enforced though?  bet a club the size of Western couldn't afford that very often/ever.

Unlikely to be enforced but why have the rule then.

Hold the phone.   I thought (through the mega-reliable sources that is the YF Forum) that the Nelson team had decided not to enter the promotion relegation and that Nomads were officially promoted.  Is this perhaps not the case?

If so I want my money back.

Was speaking with Steve Bignall a couple of weeks ago when down in ChCh and he told me that FC Nelson had decided not to contest the play-off right at the start of the season, wanted to get the club up and running first before looking to the Mainland League, I have no reason to doubt Steve. Also understand that Nomads were the only club within the Mainland region that indicated at the start of the season that they would seek promotion if the won the league.

I believe the clubs in the qualiflying leagues have to state in writing, to the Mainland Fed, before the season starts if they what promotion -  I may be wrong on this.

Great idea having the knowledge at the beginning of the year, however didn't stop Richmond not taking part at the last minute.

With only one team keen, and perhaps one or two next year, makes for an interesting discussion when the 'competitions review' meets to talk about MPL for 2013 and beyond. If there is noone else keen to come up, how do we make the bottom half of the table interesting?

To be fair to the other two Western's sides they were both chasing titles in their own leagues, which they both won, so can understand why coaches / players would want to play for the side that they have been playing all season.

Maybe the real issue is trying to stage doubles headers on successive days in the premier league considering the women's league started three weeks after the men's and the women's play one less round.

According to the Mainland review of the week both Halswell and Western got deducted 3 points for defaulting those games.

Who's going to get the wooden spoon? Looking at their last seven games both have a 1 draw 6 loss record with United goals 8 For and 18 Against with FC 7 For and 20 Against.

Oooooh....  Now there's some gossip!  Do tell more!  My guess is FC 2011, as Burnside have a good track record.

Could be more gossip in the wings with clubs not happy with the current 'competitions review' going on.  But I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

Heard a wee whisper some out of town entities are looking to move out of mainlands saturday comps and have their own, cant see it happening/working tbh

You may be right Vim but my lawyer has advised me not to comment.

Re the competition review I cannot see anything happening until the 2014 as I am sure the last time there was a review it was stated by Mainland that any changes in the future would take place two seasons out.

The only thing that could change is the promotion/relegation issue as the auto relegation was in for three season which is up as the end of this season, for the record the the got the auto chop are Burnside, Nomads and ????

Similar thing happened in Central in last few years I think. Something like some of the Taranaki clubs running their own leagues - weren't happy with the fed, didn't pay fed levies etc but a disaster in terms of the overall sport pyramid.

Hey Vim I heard that part of the issue was that some clubs were in the mix and others weren't. I know Mainland have brought in people from ther sports as part of the process (cool, always interested to hear how others are handling things); but sounds a bit like "inner circle" group and "outer circle" group. Don't you love group processes and reviews?

A promo/relegation battle for the ages: FC20i'mstilllaughingatthatname vs Chch Utd.

One, a big new modern merged club with modern processes, clubmark, employed administrator and coach/dev officer, centralised ground that is getting lights and has no summer sports clash, year-round player devt plan from 4 year olds up vs small club with small junior and senior team base, squeezed between 2 massive clubs (halswell/cashmere); BUT they hold an MPL spot.

Sounds like this is with mainlands blessing and only up to a certain age group. Cant see it happening.

I'm so conflicted, part of me wants to see the club with no juniors etc vanish, but then I hate FC LOL 11...

Conflicted indeed!  Your points about one being a well run club with lights going to be installed at their park is interesting considering their Chairman is the same Chairman as Mainland's who issued the funding for the lights to go there!

We have the play off for last/second last. It's a big game with neither team wanting the indignity of being relegated from giddying heights of Pres A (it might even be open entry, I don't know)..
