Good interview. Devlin said he himself hasn’t experienced anything like it in New Zealand before. Fair enough. He’s in Auckland and like many of us here, this is great, it’s a new era, and a great start, and you cant take that away from us here.
Also you are comparing 2 semifinals and an international with a normal match round, (albeit a derby.) We haven’t had a derby here in NZ, enjoy it all, win or lose
Martin Devlin was born in Wngtn and educated at St Pat's Silverstream.
Yep knew that think that LG went to college with him. Has been on the Nix bandwagon before Used to listen to him bit wouldnt bother anymore.
Not quite correct. Between 1975/76-1981ish, Martin, his brother Carl, Myself & Colin McDougall used to knock around together in our free time playing football & other sports (Cricket & Swimming at Maoribank when the bridge was there) with a few others after college, weekends, School holidays. Carl, Colin & I played for Tararua United. Fantastic times. Martin's dad was an awesome fella, Rod. His mum & sister are still in Upper Hutt I believe. He was cheeky even back then but here are a few truths about Martin Devlin. Since at least 1975 he has and always will be a Man United fan. He is not a glory hunter but a real fan. He loves sport in general but United were/are his passion. How he got into trouble for a few remarks as a commentator at the Basin? That's is just his personality and people should not have gotten so precious over it. Since then, yeah he had personal relationship issue. I haven't seen or spoken to him for near on 35 years. I'd love to catch up with him, Carl & Colin.

Yes semi finsls and an international so what dosnt the atmosphere at those count. The comments have been said this hasnt been seen before in NZ before. When clearly it has, think whats happening up there is great. But the commetry by a number people that it hasnt been seen before is wrong. Dont think it matters when its happened or what game fact is it has.Think actually its bloody insulting to what has happened in Wellington for the last 17 years.
Martin Devlin is a true football guy. One of the few NZ sports guys that knows his stuff. I couldn’t quota him verbatim but I’m preety dam sure since the intro of the Nix he has been on the ship.
He also has been a great generic sports (I don’t even know what to call him - presentator?)
Since the demise of radio sport, the sporting media in NZ frankly sucks. It’s great he’s back on a daily podcast and I for one will listen each day
While the Port are independent, I get a kind of a vibe that they have a better relationship with the club than the YF did, at least in the early days? Or am I remembering wrong?

I think he is ok at this level, makes a few basic errors/ poor passes each game. He would need to work on eliminating those to go higher
TBH I've not seen him have a brain fart for AFC yet. A League is probably his level or maybe a league marginally better but I still think Bindon and Surman are better.
Bindon has the highest ceiling of all and I can see him ending up better then Nelsen who was still playing football in Canterbury/US Uni at Bindon's age.
A Pijnaker brain fart was what led to Ishige's point blank miss in the first derby. He's definitely been less error prone than expected though.

I think the YF have had a good relationship with the club from the "get go". Over the years, there has been time when the relationship was tested but it was worked through. The YF are not short to remind the club that fans are indeed a part of the proceedings and rightly so.

I hope the Port get some form of committee organised between themselves and settle down. They need to consider what they want as fans, What is good for the club and what type of relationship do they want from visiting fans. At the game, it's all good for banter and singing and chanting BUT when some people feel uncomfortable or unwelcome, that's not good.
The YF have built bonds with the other Australians sides. When people are prepared to pay so much money to support their team in the Capital, they are well treated. It is an occasion for them. I believe at most Australian clubs, that they in turn whilst committed to rivalry, they do play fair. My trip to Campbelltown a few years back to watch us lose to Sydney was brilliant. I've made a few friends to which we stay in touch to this day. Football can be a big winner and create some great friendships.

I don’t remember any beef (time could have made me forget things) but I get the vibe the Port are suck-ups and get assistance. Not sure of the facts to be honest but FTP :)
The test will be when the team is not doing well and if they question and challenge the powers that be, that may be the coach for picking certain players or owners making dumb comments.
6 wins from 6, it's the perfect start, and of course a total love in.
As per AP above, the true test is when some losses at last happen. Also I think amongst the wider Auckland football community, there will be some inevitable angst when AFC's reserve side enters the Northern League.

I feel there will be less angst towards AFC's reserve side entering the Northern League since AFC won't take one of the Northern League's 4 current qualification spots - its going to become 4+1 rather than the usual 4 (the +1 obviously being AFC) so the best 4 Northern League teams will still qualify regardless

However won't AFC be hoovering up all the best young NL talent before season starts? That could get NL clubs angsty.
Yes if Auckland II become a bit of a stacked team, dominating the Northern League that won't go down so well. There is a bit of anti Weenix feeling amongst the Central League clubs.
Auckland's reserve team will generate some similar negative local football vibes. Bit unavoidable, though yes it seems Auckland's pathway model is to leave the promising 15-18yr olds with their clubs, only bringing them in when they are older than that??

The "visible leadership" thing to have a word to their over-excited members if necessary would be good. I mean, don't get me wrong, T-AFC have gotten no static at the games at all, nothing but a good atmosphere IRL. But, in the case of online jerkassery (the worst example were the wannabe hooligans threatening to bring the biff to the RoF) it would be good to know who to call to put the hard word on said jerkasses. Can't get over how some of them want other AFC supporters uncomfortable.

It's not an easy problem to solve as there isn't a actual port membership as far as I know - so any clown can claim to be "The Port" and the ones who are in your terms jerkasses enough to do things like what you said and also go into the away bay and chant to Nix fans are also the same dudes (yes it's pretty much all men) who will ignore someone giving them advice on how to be a grown up.
Not saying it's not worth trying but I just wouldn't expect it to be a magic bullet.
The Port did post on social media a few days before the game saying the things they wont tolerate which is sexism, racism, anti-social behaviour... so there is a effort to eradicate this behaviour, but they're young and they will learn with experiences (they will get some things right, some wrong) but overall, I enjoy them

Someone is obviously organising the group. Even if it’s ignored at first, there needs to be someone setting the standards for the group and then calling out the behaviour so the group can be self policing.
If the group is independent from the club, then it’s got leadership and if that leadership can communicate about marches, pre-match etc they can communicate about not being jackasses.

Which is what they have done a few times already.
They did a level of self policing on Saturday. A fair few Nix fans were sitting in the Port. Most just got the a cheeky "w**ker" chant thrown at them (much like the Nix fans, who used the same chant to AFC fans on their way to the ground). The drummer for the Port flagged down security and got one particular Nix fan removed (from the Port, not the ground). He could see things were getting heated.
There are going to be dickheads in any stadium. People combined with sports, tribalism and alcohol, certainly brings them out. The Port are trying their best. Probably much like the YF did in their early days, before they got a reasonable handle on things.

To be honest just dont get why people who say they are Phoenix fans would then go and stand with the Port. You deserve anything that comes your way if your silly enough to do that. Get there are people who also like to support AFC because they live in Auckland but to go and stand in the home teams active bay wearing a Phoenix shirt is just asking for trouble. Great to hear they are making efforts to self police if it can be done better than having security hanging around. Which is what we had for the first few seasons.

I didn't they they couldn't and that's a good idea - I'm simply saying the jerkassees are likely to ignore it.
