After watching that season i must say i thoroughly enjoyed it. The coaches sacrificing and living away- no wonder they were just like the lads and had a siege mentality.

Nix really becoming a whingy club (first italiano calling A FC lucky ) now Domes reaction to O FC league. Seriously Nix really have smashed their reputation. I know things are crap with the economy etc in the city but supporters and club need to get the chip off their shoulder, innovate and compete.

Lol. Corica is the biggest whiner in the game! He’s still going on about being cheated in the last semifinal.

Don’t buy into their press, man.
Don’t think you’ll find many Nix fans supporting many of Chief’s statements from last season.

We aren’t blaming anything. We were shark and we knew we were. We’re hoping to be surprised by this season, and if not we’ll wait until we get the next good crop.

And the Phoenix attendances in Auckland were often near 20k or over it at Eden Park. The potential for decent Auckland crowds for professional football has been there for 15 years. A FC didn’t invent that.

Have you seen the press release today- those are crafted without emotion (theoretically).

Seriously Wellington City needs to get back to being “positive”.

Haven’t seen the press release. Doubtless not a great moment.

I’d have Fran Wilde back as Mayor! Wasn’t she Absolutely Positively era?
Or get the new…there’s never guna be anything like the Lord of the Rings…Minecraft movie? Squid Games? Brokenwood Mysteries does a Die Hard Rip Off in Wellington?

We’ve got Brazilian football back in the capital this season too.

I’d take the Nix winning two league games back to back.

I guess AFC  & The Nix have something in common. Neither  could score against Heidelberg,  nor win.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I cannot remember which thread I said it but Woud WILL cost AFC games this year.  He is a shot stopper BUT has one or two brain explosions each game (as AWs fans will remember from the Olympics). Shot stoppers react to things - where Woud struggles is decision making.

If Woud plays all season AFC will do well to finish in the top 4. Its that simple.

I get the feeling this season that they're about to find out what having a keeper like Paulsen was really worth.

Strange, strange move from Sail in a World Cup year though.

He's an awful keeper......he'll probably go to the World Cup now, just to piss me off.

To be fair there were A LOT on here who said a new Auckland franchise was not going to work because it had been tried before and failed.

Only a few minutes in but the theme so far is "rubbing peoples nose into it". Seems all rather precious. "We'll show them!" says the multi billionaire and multi millionaire owners with access to a multi club infrastructure.

To be fair given the history was there anything wrong with questioning its viability. Has been great what they have done but lets be honest the test will be when they face a bit of adversity. As im sure your aware the Auckland public probably more than anywhere else in NZ can be very fickle and every thing is great if your the flavor. BUT

Got an example of how Auckland sports fans are any more fickle than the rest of NZ?

The Knights and Kingz were years ago. The 09 has changed a lot since then, it’s football community grown, and this 3rd pro team ain’t based at NHS. Plus it’s a highly resourced and smartly run operation

Crowds will drop but nowhere near as much as you are hoping for

Sail made some blunders last year for sure.  But from what I’ve seen, he’s a way better keeper than Woud in my opinion.

It annoys me that the Nix consistently had pro football in Auckland and often with excellent crowds for 15 years and that ‘pie warmer’ legacy is ignored.

The Nix led the way in the A league and in Auckland. It wasn’t a void they were coming into like the Kings. They weren’t inventing the product or the market, they were expanding something there was a proven appetite for. There were a fair few crowds near and over 20 thousand. That’s very good going.

It’s an attitude switch. After the Knights the media and general public was saying NZ didn’t want soccer. But after the Nix, they can see the team fighting away week by week and two teams or even 3 with Christchurch, doesn’t seem strange. Football folk are happy and rugby haters can see actually live and let live is fine and football can be a good laugh sometimes.

I think what’s taken most of us by surprise is how good Go Media has been for the football. Our best crowds were at Eden Park and usually lower away from the centre.

It’s also been an important market for the Nix for sponsorship, so we’ve had to relinquish that.

It’s annoying to have 15 years of history just wiped out.

Where in my post have i said anything about wanting crowds to drop.
As for examples try Rugby,Warriors,Breakers yes all have had great crowds but all of them have also had low periods when things havnt been going right. Sevens rugby is another example.
Yep they are the event for people to go to and be seen at and not necesarily to watch the football. Those people will move on to the next thing that comes to be seen at. Dont think having the hairdresser at games was to attract football people the people that was for wont be there long term or when its not cool.

there were also A LOT hoping for successful (not that successful!) NZ teams (often using the support the 'Nix have gotten in Akl as a basis for this) as it would be good the league overall and here in NZ, and good for the 'Nix.

Just cherry picking random posts to create a narrative.

The now defunct NZ Sevens was a Welly (and then Tron) sporting event, yes?
Does it losing it's lustre, and then dying show Wellington sports fans are fickle?

For sure AFC's crowds will drop. They won't be Premiers every year. Some seasons they won't even make the playoffs. Some summers they will get lots of rain affected games. They will need cleverer marketing than a giant slide and beach to keep the punters coming in.

But you are just continously pounding out this tiresome narrative of 'just wait until they have a few poor seasons blah blah'. Just from it's sheer population size, the 09/07 has a larger football community than the 04. The Estonians are here to stay and I'd bet my left kidney that from hereon until eternity they average larger crowds than the Nix every season.

Key point being, as you say, that’s simply demographics and market size. When the Nix were in Auckland they had bigger crowds.

The Sevens is a gimmick, not a sports team that requires supporting.

The Nix supporters have been absolutely top notch in my opinion. Wellington gets a lot of bellyaching of late. And it looks like it’s going to get another succession of mayors who don’t wanna pay for an infrastructure through rates, blessed be the NIMBYs for they vote and complain. Given the perhaps unnecessarily harsh economic conditions of late and the lack of respect and treasuring of our capital, the Nix turn out has been top notch.
Wellington used to be a byword for culture and positivity as someone brought up in another thread. Now it’s a whipping boy and a good way to stick it to the Libtards. Which does nothing for the country imo, much like letting foreigners back into the property market and privatising healthcare or a myriad of other things. Unfortunately the 90s/00s, DVDs, Lord of the Rings and the multiplex, were things that met Peter Jackson and can’t be replicated. And trying to simply repeat them has been a failure as the culture has moved on. Though Jim Cameron has multiple times turned the norms on their head, but that moment in Wellington hasn’t arrived.

Anyway, my point being is that the Nix fans have been bloody good through thick and thin in the dramas in the game and the buzz from outside the game or not and the fact that a whole bunch of the Auckland fanbase are ex-Nix fans probably means they’ll be alright too.

A bunch of passionate mainly fun people.
The bitterness that has crept into the forum recently is probably more to do with our struggle and the realisation that we did the hard yards and yet someone else is stealing our dream.

I'll always remember reading that academic article from about 15 years ago which explained that the main reason the Knights were based out of NHS was "demographic". Translation: they thought Albany/the Shore was, er, of a "complexion" more likely to support a football team.

Weird given the Kingz played most of their matches at Mt Smart (Ericsson Stadium back then) and actually got some decent crowds in the few seasons they hovered around mid table.

Knights crowds were a joke apart from two maybe three matches tops.

Three for me, and two for them.

And to be fair to the Kingz and Knights the Aleague was miles away from what it was when the Nix got involved - in terms of quality and coverage in NZ.

Yeah absolutely. I mean the Kingz were actually old NSL, pre A-League days. The Knights played the inaugural season and the one following, so really in the leagues infancy. Only an 8 team, 21 game league season in those days.

Three for me, and two for them.

The Kings were free to air! I remember that. And had a million players including Wynton Rufer for a while.

Still- letting Mata go and bringing in Brook and Cosgrove- I hope that continues to backfire on them. Brook does look like a player and Cosgrove is large, but Mata and Rogerson were a winning combo last season.

The Kingz were on Sky - maybe the odd game on free to air? But I remember as a kid I'd have to wait for the sports news to be able to watch any footage of the Kingz, or during family holidays hoping the motel had some Sky channels so I could watch a game or that Kids Kingz Saturday morning show!

I do not think it was just an odd game.   For quite some time I was watching their games on Prime TV.  The epic goals by Rufer Sr.  The epic failures by Lammers to connect his foot with the ball, alone, in front of an open goal.  Ah, good times.

I wasn’t really a fan at that point but I remember Ngata and Silva and not really anyone else. Also you could buy kava in a can for a while at that point. With dandelion and St John’s wort or such. But were we better for it?

Harry Ngata was definitely the unsung hero of the team.  Was he the captain, or was it Danny Hay?
And sure, Silva was great, but I will remember Paul Urlovic - great Kiwi striker - ahead of Silva.

The players themselves barely get a word in, for example, and we don’t hear from any of the club’s supporters. The Port just magically appears out of thin air right in time for the first game, introduced by way of an anecdote from CEO Nick Becker about hosting the prime minister in the Mt Smart hospitality box. ‘
