Tend to agree. As long as AFC ain't completely hopeless results wise, can see them averaging crowds around 10-12K in their first season. Novelty factor, is NZ's biggest city after all, and just it being sooo long without a pro football club in the 09.

What will be very interesting, is how they do their marketing and whole match day experience compared to the Nix. From memory Foley said he would be bringing over some staff from his LA Golden Knights NHL organisation, and as the saying goes 'America does sports well'. Certainly looking now & again at the Twitter feeds of MLS clubs like Vancouver, Portland and Minnesota they do that whole match day pre game experience impressively. And Foley ain't short of moolah, so be interesting to see what they come up with.

I've only been to Mt Smart once, but from memory there is a no 2 playing ground alongside where you can pitch tents pre game, have lots of pre match promotional stuff for kids etc etc. You can't really do that with the ROF

But at the end of the day, results will be the main driver to how big crowds are. Though yeah as AP says above, even in a season where the Warriors are a lowly 13th (of 17 teams), every home match has been sold out. Helps with the marketing that each NRL club gets over $22M from the NRL!  Compare that to the $500K pittance A League clubs are getting from the APL. But yeah expect Foley to not skimp on the marketing

Sakai to have his own little fan club it seems. Mate of mine lives in Greenlane, walking distance almost to Penrose. Lived in Japan 10 years, speaks fluent Japanese. Partner from Nippon, sports mad rugby playing 9 yr old son fluent as well. They will be on the Sakai bandwagon.

Great to see that. There used to be a healthy number of Japanese migrants in the nineties in NZ but the numbers have been overshadowed since by arrivals from China, India and Philippines. To add to then a number of Japanese actually left as well.

I think from a crowd perspective this is perfect timing for the new Auckland team.

As someone has already mentioned rugby is on the decline attendance wise. Domestic and super rugby band wagon days are well and truely over and likely beyond repair.

League at Mt Smart has been the new band wagon. On the back of a great last season, they have sold out each of their home games at Mt Smart, which is amazing.

However they have had a crap season, so there is no guarantee this band wagon will continue. Players like Johnson leaving will not help as he has always been integral to this side. RTS and Tohu Harris will be another year older as well. From both a marketing and player view they are likely a team in decline.

The band wagons (looking at the white middle class and even higher) have however now became used to entering the Penrose area. It’s not as scary as it seemed and it’s likely their kids play football and not league.

Can foresee a number jumping ship, especially if Auckland recruit well in their foreigners, market well and start the season ok. They have heavily recruited kiwis and not ausis so there should always be a kiwi presence which will help -unlike the knights.

A hard core of 5 to 7k I think is possible, with potential for the bandwagon initially to fill the place for the first game and thereafter nix /final games, with 12k going to games in between.
Have a close mate, rugby fanatic, late 20s, never shown an interest in football in his life - who's committed to going to as many Auckland FC games as possible this season. Sees the genesis of AFC as a cultural milestone in NZ sports.

This club has a golden chance to be another household Auckland name if they play their cards right, especially as youth participation continues to blow up.

For the pre-game + during activities the end without a stand is perfect. I recall the weekend at Mt Smart last year when they hosted the Phoenix and the National League final they had McDonalds sponsoring it and had set up lots of events etc for the kids which seem to be a success.

I think for the first couple months they should be getting around the 12-15k mark, the question is if this can be maintained afterwards, which I suspect will be strongly influenced by the results of the team

No they do not, there are regular warnings about this very thing pre, mid and post game. Bring flares and you will be banned.
We always have a little laugh when the warning, safety announcement is made, cos you know since when has anyone turned up to Sky stadium with a flare!? Maybe it will serve a purpose this season?

Really?

Was it a scary thing to go to Kingz games and The Big Day Out in the late '90s / early '00s? I used to go with my "Shore Boy" friends and family to both religiously (see Bloc5). Penrose is hardly south Glasgow, Marseille, or Kingston.

I wonder if they will do them behind closed doors or not and also whether the games will be against a-league or NPL teams (or a mixture)

I wouldnt be surprised if we see something at one of the derbies, more likely in Auckland I'd guess.

Putting him back in the A-league is ludicrous, he should be clear of this level.

Might as well have stayed with the Nix.

"It was always a high possibility that the 22-year-old would be sent out on loan to continue his development before he was ready to play for Bournemouth but the Phoenix were under the impression that the ‘Caceres Clause’ would rule out Auckland as a destination."

I really hope the Phoenix opposed the review into the Caceres Rule.

The fact that this review would have been communicated to clubs beforehand should have set off serious alarm bells at Nix HQ.

I really hope we make a statement on this, and also state our opposition to the review.

What a joke.

The weirdest thing about all of this is how little sense it makes for Paulsen to agree to it. Destroys all goodwill at the club that created him and essentially stalls his development for a year

I will preface this by saying I know this would be a disaster and genuinely bad for everyone, but - right now - I hope they finish last 3 seasons in a row and then cease to exist.

I know, "cutting off your nose to spite your face" and all that...

But honestly fudge them.

What a joke. He is clearly ready to move on from this level and should be competing in Europe. Two things:
1) If AP knew that this was Bournemouth intentions why the hell did he sign for them? He could be heading to the La Liga or Eredivisie (where his ball playing would be idealised) or any other top 5 league for that matter. Another year in the A League isnt what he needs. Even if a loan was on the cards why not sign for Bournemouth then loan somewhere in Europe.
2) If AP didnt know, surely Bournemouth would see greater value in sending him on loan somewhere in Europe for development. Perhaps Championship to get him use to the demands of the English game. A year in the Championship would really toughen him up.
I understand this is in part, or wholey, due to the ownership. But what a joke. Seeing one of the best NZ prospects in years be sent back to where he came is not it.

So the Nix don't sound that angry about the move. I mean looking at it objectively they get now get a few more thousand on the gate for the first derby. Plenty more added spice now. Hopefully the pantomine villain come Derby 1, is more the Foley Group, than AP himself.

Plus the Phoenix got a nice fee for Paulsen when he signed a 3 year Nix contract extension last year, and then was sold to Bournemouth. A far worse result for the club would have been Paulsen signing for Auckland, leaving the Nix on a free.

At the end of the day the Nix and AFC play for a max 9 points this season, and 6 pts each season thereafter. I doubt Alex signing for AFC changes the Nix's title chances much. And yeah the 3 derbies now get a publicity boost.

But as NZ football fan first, Nix fan 2nd - I'm disappointed for him he's back in the ALM. Backward & unexciting step for him it must be, even if the 09 is his hometown. As re the above posts Paulsen's development & needs should be front & centre, not the chance of a marketing publicity stunt if this is what Auckland are trying to achieve.

https://aleagues.com.au/news/a-league-rule-change-caceres-clause-explained-latest-updated/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR09-y2O1ncYK8hyWnm8g3z2aespJSKSdHtGhgtdZFT-0ndyVaj48zsqRgU_aem_eSqdKkrcdSNIz4ilLqvlzA

A player contracting rule change was supported by all clubs, with the premise that the APL reviews and maintains certain guardrails.

This has Terry McFlynn and City Group Becker written all over it. Bad faith cods during their career. Why change now? Anyone who cared about NZ football would never never have done this.

All that BS about his development? And as some said he’s been undervalued.

They don’t give a f- about NZ football or about football. This is the hilarious pitch invader marketing writ large.

This is so wrong.
