On The Port's Podcast, Nic Becker talks about the WSW game crowd incidents

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61564032191731
This is not the Port's podcast. These guys aren't involved in organising the Port. Some of them don't even go to the games. That is like saying the black and yellow podcast is the Yellow Fevers.

The Port did a social media story condemning the violence.

Nix fans should not be throwing too many stones. It was only last year Nix fans jumped into the away section to fight Victory fans. My take is there should be no violence, at any game. I was surprised to hear a Nix fan was punched at the derby. That should have been reported earlier.
Bit of a stretch bringing up what was a very isolated incident from some idiots who couldnt be called fans at all in any way, as a comparison to what happened in Auckland.
The facts are YF and the Phoenix both tried to highlight concerns they had before the first Auckland Derby but Auckland chose to ignore them.
Then at the second one again issues were raised and some members of YF and Phoenix staff spent part of the first half trying to highlight issues. Apparently yet again Auckland and their security chose to ignore those concerns.
Sadly all those concerns were proven to be correct and if Becker continues to bury his head in the sand im afraid come finals things may not improve.
Many of the things that YF fans experienced havnt been spoken of widely but  from those i have spoken to an away game experience in Auckland is one some will make a priority.
Bloody shame actually given the away game experience Nix fans get when travelling to other away games.
One thing I can agree with you on is red badge don't know what they are doing. Both Auckland derbies had fans from both sides, trying to sit in the active support of the opposition team. A really dumb thing to do. Red badge did not know what to do. This needs to be fixed.

Agreed. We raised this before the second game in Auckland and the Phoenix suggested a plan to Auckland for how to move people on. Clearly that didn't happen.

Clubs need to set clear procedures to red badge for this kind of thing, and for stopping oppositions fans from trying to go in there to bait people.

So no one in the Port is a spokesperson or has a journalists number? There’s been no direct contact with the press or with the RBB?

I think the Fever has to have some credit for their fan culture established over the years. At least they should be getting listened to, not dismissed. We’ve had 7k consistent fans as a ‘core ceiling’ from a 400k base compared to whatever City Football group has and is achieving in Melbourne, to around 4K in tough times.

That is the club’s CEO though saying things I can’t hear but are being summarized here. That’d be why that’s important.

Anyway, understand you want to defend the club here, but your CEO is doing a relegation level effort currently. Families going don’t want to hear that it wasn’t our fault, they want to hear that it won’t happen again and it absolutely isn’t tolerated.

Everything I heard from the club and Nick has been about it shouldn't happen again and it isn't tolerated.
He’s tidied it up.

First reaction from the match report:

It did happen at a match where the opposition fans came on mass, and also have a reputation for causing some trouble.
https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/sport/557450/assault-at-football-match-unsettling-says-auckland-fc

Anyway, it’s your club. He’s your guy.

As for the Port condemning the behaviour, if they want to reach everyone, yeh, contact with the media is the way to go. That’s where everything is collated and archived and intergenerational. Quick check of 5-6 articles, one has The Port’s perspective. If you’re representing the fan base, you’re the face of AFC fans, to such an extent you’re getting a discount others aren’t, it might be an area to lead on.

Anyway, again, it’s you guys so 🤷‍♂️. I’m not getting the big bucks (like Dale and Chopah football OBE’s in waiting no jokes above 👍) or anything, just my version of a call to Sports Roundup.

Only one win in their last 5 games for AFC, not losing will keep them top of the table but wont be great preperation for the finals series. 4 points ahead of City, another draw for AFC sees them take the league, their last game is against Perth in Auckland so that shouldnt be too tough.
They'll be tough in the finals, and will no doubt get the first week off, it'll be down to how well they can prepare for whoever comes their way.

Is the tie breaker for finals goal difference or head to head.

so it is, think they can still clinch the league next week with a draw though, assuming other results go their way.

Draw for Auckland proving a good result, with Western united losing.

Two wins would make it safe for Auckland, which they havent had for a while.

The title race is very much alive!

Auckland FC Remaining Fixtures:
Melbourne Victory (Away)
Perth Glory (Home)
Western United (Away)

Western United Remaining Fixtures:
Brisbane Roar (Away)
Sydney FC (Home)
Auckland FC (Home)

Melbourne City Remaining Fixtures:
Western Sydney Wanderers (Away)
Adelaide United (Home)
Sydney FC (Home)

I think Victory away will be too much for the JAFAs and we should see Western United to beat Brisbane to go 3 points behind. WSW away proved to be a tough fixture for Western United, but if City can find three points, The ladder going into the last two games will look like:

AFC 47
MCY 46
WUN 44

$400. Pocket change Dolaras to turn the littlish hooligan into the next Macey Fraser.

But surely Auckland Fc don't run a camp like this for young girls, without plans to launch their ALW team soon.

No I don't expect a 7 yr old to be in the ALW next season!

But would be poor PR to run camp like this charging $400 per young girl, and then say hey we are delaying the launch of an ALW again, by another 12 months - as the Bonnie Jansen article said they might.

I'd say a ALW team is happening (rumours of player already training at NHS?).

Interesting that Anna Leat, Paige Satchell & Aneka Mittendorf (ex NZU17s captain) have all chosen Hibsiscus Coast as their Auckland club, this NZ domestic season.  Not too far from Albany. Though Satchell is also sporting director at nearby Long Bay College team.

ex Fern Katie Rood is at Western Springs. There are a heap of ex Nix ALW players at Auckland United.

You'd think a number of these players would be in an Auckland ALW squad.

I’ve got a niece who’s just upped her involvement in football to 3 trainings a week, with the goal to be potentially a professional player! She’s 9. Currently in Japan.

Though the nephew I had who was also all-in on his football gave the game away at junior high school age. A lot of competition and priorities change. Getting into high school requires a lot of stressful effort.

Don’t there’s a chance of wangling them Kiwi passports tho.

3 trainings a week at age 9. Little glimpse into why Japan is so successful in womens football, especially at age group level.

Though yeah must be a big early burnout of kids at a young age, like your nephew.

Remembering reading a really interesting article on I think Friends of Football, penned by a respected shools coach. A guy who coaches at one of the big secondary schools on the North Shore. A Kiwi he'd started out coaching in the UK, including age group stuff at some of the bigger clubs there from memory.

In his view NZ had it about right, in mainly focussing on the enjoyment factor until an older age compared to the likes of Japan & the UK. He also thought it was fine for kids to play both school & club football. Declan and Arsene Wegner may disagree, but I remember it was an interesting point of view & read.

Edit - found it. Guy coaches at Birkenhead & Westlake Boys. Interesting yarn if you have the time.

Nephew’s a sensitive kid. I saw him cry at a loss a couple of times. Plus he probably started a little too late to be really serious and he also got a girlfriend and I’m sure a number of things I’m not privy to.

Niece has been playing on a mixed elementary school team, but I think this is a move to girls only. Tbf I think she’s still enjoying it! But yeh, a slightly different mindset perhaps. More folk, more competition, less time to waste.

I think also you focus in a little earlier here. Where a kiwi kid might be doing  3 days on hobbies- say swimming, music and soccer, especially by JHS quite often kids focus on one exclusively.

You can get club branded ‘training’ from 2 here, if you’re really keen.

Soccer and baseball the main sports. But basketball, volleyball and traditional sports like kendo, judo, karate and others also popular.

Strange thing pressure in football. It was all very easy for AFC early season. No real expectations. Everything went their way, the fifty/fifty calls, the late winners, the bangers. Now the pressure is really on and its having an impact. Only one win in the last six,  conceding late goals, luck against them. Its affecting the players too. Mai has missed two open goals in the last two games. Passes are being missed, tackles missed. Even metronomes like de Vries are spraying their crosses. The bangers are not going in. AFC are in unchartered waters for a debut club. They are certainly good enough to make the grand final. But from now on its 100% mental strength.

Here’s hoping that they are actually given a penalty by the Ausi Refs before the seasons end. The team they are playing this week have been awarded 5 penalties which is a bit ominous for this week.

It is interesting because I've been doing some girls' coaching training and they say that might be a warning sign: young kids esp. girls who specialise too early and train too hard are in danger of physical breakdown and/or burnout

The Roar not losing to Western United is the most unlikely result, in the sequence that could see Auckland as champions elect this weekend.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360654288/how-auckland-fc-can-secure-league-men-silverware-weekend

  • Auckland FC can secure the A-League Men Premiership as soon as Saturday night.
  • They need to win away to Melbourne Victory that evening, for Western United not to win away to Brisbane Roar on Thursday and for Melbourne City to lose away to Western Sydney Wanderers later on Saturday.
  • Auckland have drawn five of their last six matches, but maintain a four-point lead at the top of the ladder, with three rounds remaining.

Auckland FC have launched a petition website to show the Auckland council the support behind their bid for Western Springs.

It contains some more detailed renders of the stadium as well - still only a 3 sided stadium and no roof over what I assume is the port's stand (which would be strange considering that's the frequent observation around Mt Smart that you can't really hear the port due to the lack of a roof projecting the sound towards the rest of the stadium)

Thats really interesting. The pitch is facing a different direction than it would be now. The no stand end backs onto western springs.

It also means that the steep bank is also used for seating which wasn’t obvious in the initial promo. Admittedly it doesn’t look a great spot for watching football , with a concourse in between. I’m really really hoping that the 12k quoted does not incorporate that seating as if it does those two covered stands are mighty small.
