This feels very much like their own Petone Arena moment. A good idea but done kinda half arsed. I wonder how much compromise was involved in order to satisfy all the financial backers involved?

https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/360830419/auckland-fc-backers-promised-850000-visitors-year-western-springs-stadium
The numbers dont make sense, given their crowds why would they only build a 12500 seat ground.
190000 for Professional Football equals 15.2 games at 12500 seats. Not that many rounds and doubt the A League would allow that size stadium for finals.
Ali and Anna got their helipad so stadium was surplus to requirements. 😁

Maybe a women’s team too?

Nix probably pay peanuts and therefore likely get monkeys for their advertising/marketing/social media. Domey then goes to the media and whines that nobody is coming to the games. Rinse, repeat
Does your talking shark about the Nix ever change or is it always just " rinse repeat"
Have you ever attended a Nix fan engagement and bothered to talk to Domey or any of the other Nix staff who are always engaging and willing to talk. Or is it all just bluff and bluster from you.

Mate, nobody running the Nix needs to hear my opinion.

But Domey is on record in at least one podcast interview I remember saying he would rather spend money on player wages and the academy rather than in advertising which he believed would not move the needle in terms of interest and attendance. As such, it is unrealistic for us to expect to match AFC's social media game because 1 they have money and 2 the guy running the Nix is publicly sceptical about trying hard in that sphere to do things

Edit: this was in response to ballane's response to me

Part of me wonders how serious AFC really were about Western Springs, given the proposed nonsensical 12k capacity number and the really crappy 3d visualisation graphics of it which made it look awful. Maybe there never was any intention of following through with it. But I can't think of what else they may have wanted to achieve with such a bluff

The best marketing is doing well on the field - doing poorly on the field results in all aspects of the business being under more scrutiny. Our socials are pretty good (incl. YT) - way more active in terms of interaction than afc.

12.5k was from memory the seats only and not the bank which could add a heap more if needed for big games.

As I understand it the 12k was for the 3 closed stands. The 4th side was to remain as the big open bank which full would easily accommodate another 6k plus.

It wasn’t the football that was heroic assumptions given their season last year.
It was the concerts, conferences and other activities.
But I still think it would have made use of the space more than currently and other proposals. But building on a swamp often runs into extra costs.

You make some good points. The Nix need to engage the next wave of supporters. Once again AFC are showing us up.

Yeah, it's gotta be a tough one to manage though, do you do all the socials in a way that attracts the younger "new gen" fan and annoy the current fanbase who dont want the silly 15 sec soundbite, or do you stick with what has worked for ages and keep the current fanbase happy. AFC dont have that issue because all their fans are new.

Id presume that most on here are 30+. How many of us are all that bothered by social media apart from forums etc?

I think socials, especially TikTok, X and Instagram are generally the domain of the young so should be used by the club as such with content targeting them.
FB users are generally older so Nix content there should be aimed at them (us).

It's clear AFC know this and use it right, the Nix maybe not so much.

there was only 2 closed in sides from memory - the end facing up the hill was no roof and the other end open like Mt Smart, for the D-zone activities - concert stage etc.

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/09/22/auckland-fc-owners-add-top-tier-croatian-club-to-growing-global-network/

The global football group that holds a major share in Auckland FC have added a stake in Croatian champion club HNK Rijeka to its portfolio.

Black Knight Football Club, a partnership led by billionaire Bill Foley, have reportedly acquired a 25% stake in HNK Rijeka, who won the top-tier Supersport HNL competition last season.

Croatia becomes the eighth country, at least, in which the investment group has ownership or strategic partnerships with prominent clubs.

Main photo: Bill Foley … his vision is for a global group of football clubs that collaborate.

The HNK Rijeka transaction means BKFC’s interests include:
  • England: 100% ownership of English Premier League club Bournemouth.
  • New Zealand: 82% share in A-League club Auckland FC.
  • France: “A significant minority investment” in French Ligue 2 club FC Lorient.
  • Portugal: Majority stake in Primeira Liga club Moreirense Futebol.
  • Scotland: 25% stake in Scottish Premiership club Hibernian.
  • United States: A strategic partnership with Major League Soccer’s Orlando City.
  • Japan: A strategic partnership with J1 League club Kyoto Sanga.
Foley has openly promoted a vision and business strategy of building a global group of football clubs who share expertise, and opportunities to move players within the group.

Any of the Birkenhead players stand out?
mrsmiis
A ton of young players blooded in AFC's 2-0 win over Birkenhead. Randall and Brook with the goals, either side of the half.

Sakai, Gallegos, May, Hall, and Gillion all rested - Sakai was just chilling on the grass bank with Takuya Iwata and his kids, getting no shortage of young autograph-seekers noticing him - and all the U20 reps were absent, of course.

Lachie Brook looks like the shark - probably AFC's best player technically and was a nightmare for the Birkenhead midfield all match, often cutting inside from the right and beating two or three men before feeding through to the strikers or to de Vries/Rogerson in an advanced left-wing position.

Cosgrove had some nice touches and turns but really looked lost out there, losing more than a few duels to the Birko defenders and skewing some good chances. Really not sure if it's a good fit yet; aside from Randall I worry about the production, especially with May looking extremely poor in the Australia Cup

Elliot was quite poor, nothing came from the right - de Vries conversely was brilliant as always

FDV & Cosgrove might end up a useful combo for AFC.
Woud started but Sail I read through the Twitter thread came on.

Unfortunately Sydney FC didn't provide any similar wrap of the Nix warmup game on their socials that I can see.

New faces for the AFC Development squad as their U17s took on the Nix last night.

Assuming this will be a similar arrangement to the NYL in the Handy days - players will return to their ‘parent’ clubs at the end of the U17 season?

From what I can tell, new guys include:
  • Loeki van Baarzel (Suburbs)
  • Charlie Taylor (Birkenhead)
  • Damion Kim (ECB)
  • Matias Nunez (AU)
  • Harley Hill (Hamilton Wanderers)
  • Ricco Howarth (Birko)
  • Will Britton (Springs)
  • L? Cunnington (Springs)
  • James Wenceslao (AU)
… among others

Cheers, McKay a 18 yr old from Fencibles. Though suspect if Luka Vicelich wasn't away with the NZU17s he would probaly be in this squad for VUC.

Vicelich lots of mins in the Australia Cup, and looks highly promising.

AFC will miss Gallegos, and may not start FDV after his long trip from Oslo.
Elliot at LB?

Niche Cache's article on the AFC Reserves from Feb this year.

Ryan McKay – Defender (30/05/07)
Another East Aucklander, McKay has risen swiftly through the Fencibles system to get this opportunity. To give you an indication of the bloke’s youth, he was playing U17s for Fencies just last year. He was also often captaining that U17s side so there’s another indication for you. Can’t tell you much else about him, being as he’s so nascent in his career, but his mere presence is proof that these Auckland FC jokers have been doing their research.

Rogerson also benched.

Disappointing as Marlee Francois despite having pace has no output at all.

Just watching the warm up and remembering his brief cameo in the Australian cup, That new 6 foot 4 striker looks like he permanently limps. Looks like he has one leg longer than the other, the way he walks.

Don’t think he is built to press so he had better be able to knock them in.

Auckland will rise once more

Any Japan based folk getting this blocked?

There’s a list that SPOTV has 6 games live or delay in the website? Sakai might have pushed the viewing figures to make it worth their while…

Edit: bugger. Happened after the Brisbane game. Or games not covered are still on YouTube.

I watched pretty much all the game and it reminded me of a scrappy II Division Polish league game from the sixties.  I would say both sides were evenly matched and they have beaten each other into a draw.
Sakai - despite being outplayed a couple of times - showed some sublime interception passes, that is where experience counts.  Verstraete was decent but the absence of Gallegos in midfield was showing. Dan Hall was solid, and once Pijnaker is back in a few weeks'time the defence may become even harder to break down (just in time for our derby).

May missed the target too and others hit weak shots. It was a rusty attacking performance. I’m hoping Cosgrove is going to fail and they’re guna look silly for letting Mata go. But that’s probably not that likely.

But it was quite something how much Mata created space for May and others and their scoring rate and early scoring went up last season after his arrival.
