This kind of nonsense makes me more determined that there should be active-support alternatives to The Port. The bit about doxxing the B&Y podcast guy reminds me uncomfortably as to when I got Facebook stalked by a Port character who disliked T-AFC's existence (pretty sure not the same guy). Not All The Port obviously, but a few bad apples.
Nah T-AFC was not the one. We don’t need political football supporters groups in NZ. Slippery slope that.

From afar it seems that from early on a number of Brit expats in Auckland, have joined in with The Port (some even in their leadership group), and brought with them that nasty hooligan type approach. Hate everything (incl AWs) that isn't Auckland FC.

Not easy I imagine for others within The Port, to chuck these guys out now, if there is a fair number of them, and they are very much part of the active support.
Not helped by Nic Becker seeming to say 'no problem to see here'.

I dunno how shocking it is that a CEO is using spin to paint a rosier than might be the truth picture - I think this is pretty standard in business let alone the cutthroat world of sport.

That said he personally went and visited the WSW fan who got attacked and made sure the attacker got a ban (although like someone said earlier the effectiveness of those bans hard to police).
Yeah but it goes back further than that he flat out denied Phoenix fans had any issues and he wasnt aware of of any. When that just wasnt the case, has to be a point where he accepts there is an issue. Its the continual  denial or blaming others that annoys people i think.

Pulp announce concert in Auckland on Saturday February 21, and you think there is something on that day ... and then realise it is the second derby game in Wellington ...

Did I say they were worse? Bad eggs will be flush out if the port surely. The guys I know in the port will be disappointed with the behaviour of some.

The more I think about the political side, the more I think it would be a slippery slope.

Whilst I may not agree with everything that Doloras and her bunch would say, I would have empathy for some.

But if there were a bunch of entitled David Seymour supporters, that would really fire me up

The prawn sandwich brigade? Or in our Kiwi context, the seafood platter brigade?
Edit: or even more, in an Auckland context: new bar restaurant Hello Sailor, in Half Moon Bay (opposite Glen Innes, not a higher decile burb) has seafood platter on the menu at $220. Note: Harry Lyon, ex-Hello Sailor the band, is a co- owner. Obviously no more a muso but a capitalist-Seymour-pig.

Let's face it, you look at the Australian Championship where you have not one but two Croatian fascism-themed supporters group making people's lives a misery, and anyone who thinks half a dozen lefties waving a Tino flag is somehow a terrible provocation can just get lost.

Compared to those Ustaše scumbags, an ACT Party fan group would be harmless and funny. The worst they'd do is wear red baseball hats and pat each other on the back for "owning the wokies".

Would never get that bad like those Aussie teams. But I’d ask the question why the hell would we need a lefty and righty group? I’d happily go to a football game with a right or left supporter and be united by the football not bloody politics. Most would agree I would hope.

I'm hoping the Port would be actively self policing and keeping the mischief makers in check or having them removed. I think a rivalry between both clubs is fine, but I too, don't want it to go the Aussie way with the Serbs v Croats, Italians V Greeks etc. We don't need that in our football or country. Support your team, not a cause.

I used to think that sport, be it football or world chess championships, was one way for all of us to recognise a fellow human in someone wearing a different colour hat. Art (especially cinema) is another, to allow us to see ourselves in dramas and tribulations of people like ourselves, just with the subtitles.
I have bonded somewhat with a bloke my age (an old English migrant) by us being the two main members of a small pub quiz group. He has very different political views from me, which we occasionally air, gently.  I think the key is that he is a decent open minded bloke, and these exist in all parts of the political spectrum.  I am happy to spend more time with him over a beer and trivia, than with some foaming-at-the-mouth types who actually share my political views but would not allow for any other.

This is part of why I love this country. Most of us can debate and disagree but also discuss things over a Beer/Coffee/Tea/Milkshake.  We for the most part have rational minds. I really hope 99% of AFC fans just want to support football and their team and likewise with the Nix fans.

I think it's safe to say the percentage of AFC fans that are just like you and want to support their team but aren't dicks is in the mid to high 90's percent wise - the ones that aren't are ALWAYS more noticeable  - on both sides of the fence.

In the past, some of the best long afternoons at the pub next to the Addington ground were spent over a beer with the CCM, or even Perth, fans who flew in to Christchurch when the Nix had a game here.  Nice guys, good atmosphere and on our part a respect to their commitment (Perth flights to ChCh are not cheap).  Cannot comment on the travelling fans from other clubs, did not get to meet them here.

Stupid question from me (just because if I do go to the derby I likely am going on my own and usually am on my own) what if I/we don't know what this guy looks like? (though I avoid trying to talk to people-my own social anxiety).

I've been told by another AFC fan that he will be at the derby (veracity tbc). Probably best if everyone gives him a wide berth and doesn't engage in any nonsense he tries to initiate.
If your going i wouldnt worry about it to much he is more than likely to try and engage with people he thinks he can bait and your obviously not that person. The other thing to do is stick with the YF people am sure they will make sure you are okay.
Hopefully AFC does the right thing and bans him. Yeah Right

Still comeinto the zone if it makes you feel safer. Inbetween this and my last comment, I am thinking, that the AFC fan on the end of a headbutt, should lay a complaint with the Police. Get this guy dealt with properly. Obviously has anger issues and I'm surprised his employer still retains him after that Pod Business.

Terry McFlynn on the Unused Subs is a really interesting listen. One of the interesting things he says is that Bournemouth straight up bought Paulsen with every intention of immediately loaning him to Auckland (and with the intention of getting the rule changed to achieve this).

Maybe this was common knowledge, maybe this was what many assumed was the case but nobody had come out and openly said this as far as I know. There was at least for a time a narrative that it wasn't the original plan for Paulsen to be loaned to AFC, that this was a disappointing thing for Paulsen etc.

in other words water is wet. The whole loan rule was just in place so the City group didn't make it a one team league. Given owners of clubs such as AFC and Victory (Tony Bloom) are involved from different leagues, it made sense to remove the loan rule as there isn't just one club in the league under multi-club ownership.

Would we care as much if Paulsen got signed by Brighton and loaned back to Victory for a season, probably not.

Absolutely agree about the Perth travelling support, the guys who came over end of last season were great to talk to after the game and their dedication in coming all this way speaks for itself.

Derbies are a bit different but I remember sharing friendly banter with a table of AFC supporters at The Right Track when we took it over, and enjoying the conversation with some Port members prior to the AWs game in Auckland. So despite a small minority of highly visible dickheads it is possible.

I know why the Nix were ok, they got a good transfer fee. Though people in general don't really like it when wealth changes the rules to their benefit. And it's a rule that only a few clubs can exploit. The way it was also done, the loan move announced before the rule was changed, was rather bullish

I said this last year too, but with the Caceres rule being removed, I think A-League should allow some form of transfer fees between clubs. Right now you have A-League clubs with multi-club ownership who essentially can buy players using transfer fees (using another owned club) while the rest can't and rely on off-contract players. Obviously the league and clubs have a bit of financial troubles so can understand why they're holding off on this though.

The removal of the rule was supposed to allow for a pathway towards a domestic transfer market between clubs (I believe that's why clubs were ok with it being removed) - but since it got scrapped nothing more has been said about it unfortunately

I highly doubt they are more credible but I'll leave it at that. The club and FRG are investigating that.

I will add that fan violence is a massive no for me. We should all go to the Football for a good time, not a fight.
