Plus the PFA team has to be a 4-3-3 formation. It's part of the voting criteria. So rather than him being chosen as the central striker, he's been chosen as one of three forwards in general.

I'm not an expert on the MLS but sounds something that they do.

I was there ... tis true... FFA will pay players direct as I understand it and send the tax money to the clubs ... essentially FFA will make a monthly payment to the players and club re the 2.5 million salary cap...

New CBA is for 2 yrs, Cap goes up to 2.5 mil for 13/14 and 2.55 mil for 14/15. The FFA distributions to the clubs will match the salary cap.
Other important points of the new agreement include:
• the retention of 2 Marquee Players per club;
• the retention of 3 Homegrown Players per club;
• an increase in the minimum wage to $50,000 (excluding superannuation and any match payments)($40,000 for players under 20);
• retention of arguably the world’s best player injury protection scheme, featuring full protection for contracted players, income insurance for 104 weeks for injured players out of contract (now capped at $350,000 p.a.) and career ending insurance (1 - 10 years annual salary based on age, capped at $500,000);

Really does it make it easier for all clubs to become sustainable long-term. Probably the biggest thing to happen to the league since its inception. Now, all we need is to get rid of those stupid plastic chairs and get a real subs bench!

I can understand that the FFA pays the players, then every player/$ under the cap is guaranteed to get paid, but then not to pay out the difference to the club if it is spending less than 100% of the cap is silly.

Ask the owners of the 'Nix. We are supposedly aiming to spend up to the cap, if we happen to be under we should still receive our share and since we are not yet fully sustainable it would be welcomed. If the owners were happy with their extra payments the increased revenue could be invest to improve facilities (and keep players like Marco :P ) or help fund our academy or pay for extra costs we incur when we stay in Oz between matches.

I think if they give the money outright as a lump sum, then you will have teams that will try to make money out of it. i.e. if we can put out a team for only XYZ of 2.5 mil, who cares how they perform if they make us money. While they are entitled to make money out of it, what does that then do the credibility of the league putting out a team of hacks on minimum wage. It would not happen but the potential for abuse is there.
I agree that the teams have to spend to the cap limit or anything not spent is not given to the club (or perhaps find some other use to benefit the club with out it being pocketed)
