Because he has teenage boys that aren’t going to want to leave their friends behind for Wellington.

Then he's in the wrong line of work and should stick to being in TV.

If Sydney is such a horrible place why do 100000 Kiwis live there?

I was in Auckland for 2 weeks over Christmas and I would say that it is the worst place I have been to in 20 years. A dump.

I couldn't compare them. I'm in Sydney a week every other month, I can't remember the last time I was in Auckland other than just transiting in the airport.

To paraphrase Muldoon, I think it probably improves the IQ and sense of humour of both places.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

I remember a guy from Sydney telling me how he visited Welly once, for work.

He just talked about the wind, and how he rounded some corner to find a 40kg Japanese girl with her arms flung around a lamppost, and uttering “pleaaaaase help me”.

Also feel we've drifted from the topic...

The family situation is what it is, what is a little more telling/interesting is the comment I read this morning that said another issue was to do with the club's ambition or something. Sorry cant recall the exact words but they did remind me of what many of us have complained about re the club seemingly not prepared to go that extra mile to make the club successful. I have always put that down to the uncertainty of the license situation [and the hope that when that is sorted in our favour, they go all out] but if the club are saying to Rudan that the license is sorted and he still has misgivings about the club's ambition - then that would worry me a little too.

Perhaps the owners are waiting for the A League team owners to formerly take over the league and them put their cards on the table. Perhaps they don't wish to tip their hand to the current wankers in case they come up with some new and pathetic metric.

clearly the big personal issue is having his family close by, if he his our coach next year his family will be moving - this goes for any club he moves to. The unknown currently sits around club issues - ambition, a licence, a willingness to do what is needed to win the league?

I'm pretty sure he is also quoted as saying that Morrison keeps telling him the license is sorted while he is hearing different from his contacts in Australia. If Morrison is true in what he says, then the ownership might not have put their money where their mouth is to Rudan's satisfaction yet.

Depends on who he's talking to, we all know FOXs opinion on the matter.

SBS - Spin on Rudan Interview with Piney

"If I coach here, great, but my family will have to be with me for that to happen," he told Radio Sport.

"If I coach in Australia, my family will be with me at the end of this season, whether it is Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane.

"They (Phoenix) are looking at ways and means to try and make that happen."

So over this shark just when you think great we are at last heading in the right direction along comes something to throw fans back into despair.   .Just another reason why people are so reluctant to commit to supporting the club when they are continually reading negative things.

Sorry but Rudan knew dam well what he was doing,or did he not realize Wellington was in another country.

Bottom line is he wanted an A league gig and none of the Aussie teams seemed prepared to take the punt we were so he came here.Clubs in Aussie like what they see so surprise surprise   out come all the excuses why he wants to head back over there.

He said in the interview he'd knocked back four other A-League head coach offers in the past so while he's great full to the Nix for giving him the opportunity it's not as if it was his only opportunity.

We know that the Jets offered him something a few years ago, I wonder who else had talked to him? Maybe CCM before going for Okon or Mulvey?

Meh, if he goes we have full confidence in the club to carry on his good work and appoint someone suitable to take over.

Right guys?!

Rudan is not the best coach. He is not better than Ernie in his first season + he gave much less confusing interviews about his private issues. Ernie got some credit to the Wenix setup and professionalism in club and we he quit the job with style.

If Rudan goes, we get another coach and if the new guy is not a complete numb and we finish 4th, I'm a happy chap.

about 7 years ago · edited about 7 years ago · History

Yeah with our current squad, and maybe more importantly spirit, I think we can do better than Rudan's doing with us now. Of course he's the one to almost wholly credit with bringing the squad and spirit together, but I for one have pretty limited worry if he does leave - we'll hopefully pick up a good coach to lead the reins, and the positive atmosphere will be retained with the renewal of our license.

Rudan's not the only competent coach in the world, but careful, we don't want another Darije

Rudan was very important in bringing the core values back to the club - we lost that quite demonstratably with Darije

Bringing back the core values started last year with Greenacre.

I think Greenie has to be the guy who carries on the good work thats already been done if Rudan does end up going. He knows the culture, knows how to get the best out of our current squad having worked with Rudan day in day out. For me its a no brainer really

This is nothing about core values. Our off field organisation is poor and Rudan has helped with that. If we lose Rudan we need both a new coach and some off field leadership. That's manageable, but we need to sort both things

So he had these other offers supposedly yet the one he chose is the one that took him away from his family to another country.Yeah right

Western Melbourne would mean a move for the family too.

However CCM would not.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

I may be reading too much into it but he doesn't say "the club", he always calls it "our club".

I feel like he's totally i vested in the club and will be untill he isn't a part of the club.

If he is getting better offers that will give a better work life balance then like any of us we consider moving and if we care about our employer we give them a chance to match/ better the offer.

What those nuances are we can't say but I don't feel like he's planning to shaft us.  If he does move on I feel it will be for reasonable human reasons, not to screw us.

Of course I hope he stays.

I hope you keep him... where I sit at Gosford Stadium, is the upper level behind and in line with the opposition teams coaching box...

By the holy mother Mary, he is impressive to watch he seems IMO to have a sixth sense of where to guide and what to say to his team... and the respect shown to him by the players speaks volumes for his knowledge and ability and as the post above says he has done it the hard way ... via the NPL ...

I hope the bean counters over their understand what a unique talent they have ... good luck in keeping him... as I posted earlier it ""sucks dicks"" that the new Melbourne team are trying to poach him...

Mike Mulvey is looking for a job, I'm sure he can slot right in if Rudan decides to leave us... I'm sure he'd be a cheaper option than Rudan as well.

100% this

Nix management got lucky getting Rudan. But the success driven by Rudan has only papered over the cracks. The club has been very poorly managed for the last 4 or 5 years. If Rudan goes we will be back to the rinse and repeat cycle of changing the coach every year. In an organisation if you repeatedly lose key staff members then thats a sure sign that there are serious management issues that urgently need addressing.

The biggest mistake Welnix have made IMO was not appointing a proper CEO with football management experiance. Running a football club is not just about spread sheets. You need someone with football management knowledge who can work with a proper medium/long term plan. At the moment we lose a coach.....then flap about wasting time appointing a new coach who then has to scramble around and find a squad and get them is shape for the following season...then we repeat the whole exercise. There is zero continuity.

Nix management appoint a coach and then expect them to take on the whole recruitment, publicity, media roles etc . Rudan is now Mr Phoenix. He is the face of the Phoenix....he is the go to guy that drives the recruitment, coaching, media, publicity...everything. Thats a lot of weight on one persons shoulders. Especially when the coach's primary job is sporting. Thats why if he leaves it will leave a huge, huge hole. When we had a proper footballing CEO like Pignata, he took on lots of the off field stuff.

This issue has come up quite often on the forum. There have been calls for a director of football appointment. There is probably not enough fat in the Nix budget for this extra position but IMO there would be plenty of competent football managers who could do the dual CEO/football managers role.

Mark Rudan: Phoenix 'chipping away' at history

https://www.ftbl.com.au/news/mark-rudan-phoenix-chipping-away-at-history-520341

With the Nix storming towards a home final Rudan called on Nix fans to respond in numbers and pack the stadium for their last three home games of the season.

We got 23,000 in Auckland which was a record

We just want the fans now to come out in big numbers, with three home games remaining in Wellington, to get right behind the players because they’re doing their bit.”
