Awesome that an Aussie coach would go so far as bringing in a hongi, using a haka, backed up by the club's Te keo symbol. Brave and shows he is looking for meaning at every turn. Love it.

I think he's a breath of fresh air. Not just for NZ football, but football in general.  I really enjoy hearing him speak, incredibly passionate and articulate. I'd happily see him as Aberdeen manager one day (just not yet obviously ;) )

Hopefully NZ football as a whole take note and learn from him.

I cant see anything solid in the TWG article apart from wishful thinking on part of Western Melbourne. So, they've been "bowled over" by Rudan therefore  he is supposed to be "poised" to join them?

I thought he had a two year contract with us? Just bs and speculation. Could go to the new Sydney team a season later though and return to his family.

He's Invested so much in the club. Surely he wont be leaving this season. Wont be staying longer than his contract, I can tell you that for free

He invested not much more than most other coaches or random people working abroad. He is her in Wellington for 7-8 month, if there is stress with his family he is gone. Rudan is just a few hours flight away from his Aussie home, this is pretty easy exit and 100% talked through with his family. I’m not saying his not committed or does not do a good job. And beeing seperated from family is hard, I would never do that myself. But some here talk he is a saint, I think it’s all a bit over the top.

Well maybe not invested but sacrificed as he is living in a country away from his whanau. This is quite different from other employees. I think from the articles about him, he will stay. Based solely on old school values which he seems to have. Loyalty etc

I'd find it hard to believe he's going to Western Melbourne. He's got no real connection with them. If it was Sydney FC or the new South West Sydney side I'd get it. However if he's looking to take the next step, a start-up club in Melbourne is a good option. Given we are unlikely to get our licence renewed at the end of next year, he'd be mad to turn down a good offer. Rudan has done a great job for the Nix but at the end of the day he'll do what's best for him and his family. You can't begrudge him for that.

Move the family here, problem solved. resolve our licence issue and another problem solved.  This club is a project that even he must be curious to see how it finishes

It just doesn't add up to everything he has been saying. Everything is about respect, buying into the club, making a change, loyalty, etc. Surely the bottom line is he stays for the 2 years he's contracted for. He's been recently talking a lot about preparing for next year. It just doesnt seem like something he would do, leave us after 12 months

Completely unfounded article, no sources, no proof, no reasoning, plus goes against literally everything Rudan’s said so far - just media speculation designed to unnerve the club. Notice how it kisses Rudan’s ass and only belittles the club - got to keep author bias in mind. Not worried at all to be honest

And as Rudan said himself earlier. he does not comment on speculations.

He's not leaving until at least the end of next season surely. He's too committed and doing well with us will work as a springboard for him to get on to bigger and better things eventually.
I know what we could do to impress him and try and retain him though... A fool YF Rudes Tshirt which would certainly sell in numbers and make him feel like he's loved here!

Simple question. Does Rudan owe the nix the breakdown of his family? 

It's got to be a proposition that suits him. 

A contract is a framework for managing change, it's not absolutisim or slavery.

Maybe the club could sweeten the deal and help him relocate his family down here for the rest of his contract if that's what they want. And if Rudes felt more settled here, he may be open to a new contract beyond the end of next season, assuming the new A-League management group still want us. Frankly, the way we're playing at the moment, why wouldn't they? Imagine if the only NZ club made the semis, or finals, and then got dropped? I think it would be a new 'underarm' scandal, and Aussie football's getting enough bad publicity at the moment. 

Breakdown of his family? He said he misses his kids. That's understandable but let's be honest he is on a fixed term contract and flies to aussie every second weekend... I'm sure he's working with the club to maximise time with his family.
Let's be honest, unless he gets a job where his family is based, he's not gonna see them much and I doubt he plans on working in Sydney (or wherever they're based) for tre rest of his career...

Read what I said- the proposition has to suit Rudan, and doesn't exist at any cost.

No other A-League club was prepared to take punt on him before Nix brought him over. Knowing what we know about Rudan's values, he'll be here till the end of his contract. It is a mutually beneficial deal for his, and ours, long-term ambitions.

And just like with the first season of Ernie's coaching (at almost any club he coached), it is always best to wait for the second season to have better perspective.  We all need an early resolution of our future, and whatever the decision is will have an impact on many careers and contracts. You'll be mad to expect Rudan not to have long-term options, options by the start of the second season depending on what FFa cooks up by then.

I think I heard someone say [a footballer] that in the professional world of sport its not unusual for players and coaches to be separated from their families for long periods of time in terms of living apart from each other. Its also not unusual in the real world either. Many people work in the mines or on oil rigs and the like all over the world and their families stay at home. In the 3rd world families are estranged for years even forever when one or two of them work in other countries and send money home. So lets not make it out to be something especially different, as someone else has posted, its actually down to the people involved as to what they think is best for themselves and their families.

A: "I'm not going to answer that. It's been brought up a little bit at the weekend, I'm going to abstain from answering that question, there's nothing to talk about, I'm not going to make comment on it. I am contracted and I am the head coach of Wellington football club and as far as I'm concerned, all my energy goes into making sure that we are the best prepared for every game that we play."

A: “I’m here as the Wellington Phoenix football coach and all my efforts go into making sure my team is best prepared to win a football game every week."

It's quite non-commital isnn't it.  He could put all the speculaiton to bed by simply saying he's here next year

It's not as if he's going to commute from Sydney to Melbourne everyday, he'd be a couple of hours flight closer but would he really see his family more? He's in NSW a lot as it is virtue of almost half the teams basing themselves there.

If we don't get our licence renewed I think the chances of him being here next season drop quite a bit. 

Given i'm relatively new to all of this, when does this licensing issue get decided upon?  And what would happen to the club in a doomsday scenario? 

Personally, I can't see why he'd move to Melbourne, he's still away from his family.  I'm sure he'll stick to his word and stay for 2 years. But not beyond.

Yeh, his family not being there worried me. 

There was an interview with him a few weeks ago when he talked about his family and them currently deciding whether to move over or not.

If his family were going to move over, it would've happened over the Xmas break, less interruption at school, treat it like a years exchange etc.

When Mourinho was at Man U, I don't think his family left London, and he spent entire time in Man U in a hotel.  Peter Cech went to Arsenal from Chelsea so he could stay in London

Wow if his cousin is a big part of the new A League team at McArthur South West, he must be a right chance of becoming their first coach. Interestingly this is also the new team, that seems to have established a relationship with Welnix. So some proper open honest discussions could well be had.

Going to Melbourne doesn't seem to make much sense, but finishing his 2 year Nix contract, and then becoming coach at McArthur for their first season does.

I wonder how many years his kids have left at school? I moved high schools (and Islands) as a kid and it sucked mostly. 

Don't forget in the winter off season, he can base himself back in Sydney for probably nearly two months. Chuck in his family visiting him in Wellington during Oz school holidays, and to me it would seem to make sense to stay with the Nix until he found a coaching gig back in NSW.

Anyway once Nix, have the licence situation sorted they should be looking at some sort of succession plan for post the Messiah - helping some NZ resident coaches get their badges etc
