If Ernie gets the job, expect us to never beat Newcastle again.. He'll take them to the final, win the whole thing.

FORMER English Premier League manager Steve Kean wants to turn the struggling wooden spoon Newcastle Jets into an A-League force.

Kean is in a two-way battle for the vacant coaching job at the club with veteran former Melbourne Victory and Wellington coach Ernie Merrick.

I wouldn't want Kean in charge of my worst enemies team, hope they play safe and go for Ernie instead.

Didn't he release Vinnie from MVFC though?

Likely to see Burns back at the Jets?

They only have 1 keeper on their books, I would rate Mambo ahead of Duncan.

Vinnie is unlikely, Jets have Ugarkovic as their DM going forward.

They have up to 7 roster spots to fill & 2 visa slots available as far as I can tell, so not much room for Ernie to collect squaddies.

With Greenacre unlikely to get the Nix top job, I wonder if Ernie might headhunt him to join him at the Jets?

Thanks.

My lasting impression of Merrick from his time here was that he wished to operate, and perhaps could only operate, in an unbridled way with resources available as desired.

This move surprise me in a sense  because, unless this Ledman group are willing to match the big clubs budgets I don't know if Ernie will prosper having to cut his cloth to suit.

The owner wants ACL within 3 seasons, they apparently have cash available for a marquee player. Wonder if he might blow that on bringing Burns back from Japan.

is Burns a full season player. It was two and a half seasons ago that hot run ended as far as I can see. And that was a bolt from the blue.

Good player ? Undoubtedly. But not one I would net the farm on leading a team to success.

I think there are a lot of questions about Merrick given his most recent success was quite a long time ago when the A-League was in quite a different phase.  Good luck, as a Phoenix fan I'm quite pleased he's turned up there as his teams are so open we should back ourselves to get some results!

Newcastle Jets will face three La Liga clubs in Spain in late July and early August as part of their pre-season plans for the 2018/19 season.

The beaten 2017/18 A-League grand finalists will meet Madrid-based CD Leganes along with two other clubs, whose identity is yet to be determined.

The Jets will also venture to southern China in early June during a blockbuster pre-season.

Newcastle, along with Sydney FC, will compete in the 2018 Free Trade Port Super Champions Cup, where they'll face Chinese Super League clubs Beijing Guoan and Shanghai Shenhua in Haikou.
