Wonder how much the Phoenix are contributing to the Jets and if that impacts on our squad budget at all or if it's funded independently.

IIRC it was Western United, Western Sydney Wanderers, Sydney, and the Nix who were funding the Jets.

id assume Jets funding is coming from a different budget, ie itll have no impact on what we wanted to spend and what we actually spend.

Queenslander 3x a year.

Hopefully the Nix owners not having to part pay the Jets wages frees up some money for an import in January.

No mention of the Phoenix still forking out for their existence? Either we've stopped supplementing their finances, or it's just poor reporting.

Either way, the interesting thing out of that - $10 million for the licence. Bill Foley may be intrigued at such a figure given he paid over double for that to set up this Auckland mob.

$10m buys you a used, secondhand one, $20m+ buys a new one?

You'd think they'd be roughly the same across the board.

Mind you, we don't know how run in to the ground their finances are, so maybe this Italian fella has come in with an 'It's better than nothing' sorta deal?

Could also be taking on some of the debts?

I do not have any facts on hand, but would be extremely surprised if Jets licence came debt free. Who would be taking care of these if not a new owner? That is how you get a bargain.
I would not be surprised if Foley did not look at the option of buying an existing club, checked the small print and said "nah, I am not fixing that hole in the ground".

Auckland is a far bigger city than Newcastle. If I wanted, and had the money, to start an A-League side, I'd be happy to pay more for the chance to set up one in Auckland rather than Newcastle.

But you'd hope that those helping to run the Jets, including the Nix owners, will be compensated for what they've done as part of this deal

Edit: The 2021 Australian Census recorded the Newcastle Greater Metropolitan area as having a population of 682,465.

Auckland has an urban population of about 1,478,800 (June 2023).

Jets also have the Mariners 1 hour down the road. So a very close competitor for fans, sponsors etc. Auckland is going to drag in football fans and maybe some commercial dollars from Northland, Waikato & the BOP.

Foley also has a relationship with NZ, but not necessarily with Australia.

It will be interesting if the going price for Perth is higher than the Jets.

Was there a 'cutoff' for when this needed to be sorted by? I recall something being mentioned, but maybe that was in relation to the supposed Canberra bid that was 'happening'. 🤔

Article dated 19th March. Basically a late April deadline. Doesn't seem promising.

https://au.sports.yahoo.com/jets-canberra-must-ownership-deals-012511323.html

Conroy indicated Newcastle and Canberra's futures needed to be sorted within the next month to allow the league to plan for the 2024-25 season - and wouldn't rule out the possibility of either club folding if that didn't happen.
