I can't see this level of recruitment happening in future seasons. It is mainly because NYCFC are recruiting big names and have nowhere for them to play for 6 months, so are using Melbourne City to bridge the seasons. That won't happen again.

yes, but the money still will be there next season.

I hope people put their bet on at the tote before the book was shut because this has to be their title. If not then that's just amazing.

Can you imagine Franks reaction along several fronts...

'I normally play football at this time of year but its not raining'

'We only play one game a week you say?'

'Where the fuck did these refs come from?'

Big name players have never automatically equalled success; especially in the A-League. Considering they're just 10 game guest stints, I wouldn't be too worried.

Better chance of it equalling 30 points than not.  Nix would like that chance and pull factor at home games.

Bloody hell, the things money can buy you!

Anyone know what the rules around multiple guest stints in a season for one club are?

You get 1 guest stint per season. They will just be creative with their transfers to have both Villa & Lampard on the books.

I think the FFA need to be fairly careful about this. They obviously want the exposure and interest that these sort of players will add, but they do have the guest rule in place for a reason and this would be an obvious breach of that. They wouldn't want the integrity of the the competition questioned. I think this should use up their marquee player for the entire season.

As will the gap between the A-league and MLS seasons.

In future seasons new signings to NYFC will be available to play soon after the completion of the European season.

The registration windows – the dates between which MLS may request the transfer certificate of a player under contract in another country – are as follows:

February 18 – May 12 (Primary Window)

July 8 – August 6 (Secondary Window)

Melbourne Heart have always struggled to bring in a strong supporter base. This is the perfect way to do it. People will be interested, go watch, jump on board. 10 games would have gone, same with Villa and Lampard, but chances are a lot of those fans will stay.

Already noted, but this is really going to mess with their squad over the whole season. I don't really see them turning up for a whole lot of the pre-season, then they're going to fly away when MLS starts? That's going to be pretty disruptive, and someone's going to have to manage all those egos into one team somehow. You can bet that they'll expect play to be built around them.

Having said that, I'd of course take them in a heartbeat if they were offered here...

Perhaps, but still very good players by A League standards.

But surely it takes more than this? I can imagine them drawing in a lot of fans when the guest players are there but I don't think it is going to help their active support. I reckon they have to do more than throw money around if they want to win over people.

Not going to be their title...

To have a successful season you need to build a solid team.

You can have all the stars and big names you like but they don't guarantee success (ADP didn't win SydneyFC any titles...)

If anything they might make the play offs.

But nevertheless exciting times for the A-League!

Will give it another boost for season 10, can't wait!

Apart from chucking money at players and the off-season trip to Manchester, have MC franchise thrown any money at the coaching side of things at Melbourne City?

Obviously a winning team should get more supporters. But I think this is a good way to start. Already a lot of people are talking about City and no one ever used to talk about Heart. If they can get people through the doors, buying jerseys, then win and they'll retain them.

I rate JvS as a coach; probably the best thing they have going for them.

Why? Hasn't done much with the Hearts before and was sacked in Mexico afaik.

Victory release Francesco Stella and are chasing a Dutch striker.

This is interesting. It shows that Muscat wants the team to function a lot differently than it did last season (and I think it needs to). Obviously they already have Berisha but if they sign another quality striker they will have a very different formation.

They will be playing with a 4-5-1, so maybe they are gonna look for a wide striker rather than another out and out striker. The false nine went out the window when they signed Berisha.

Interesting they are allowing Etihad when Qantas are the official airline partner....

Was there not a story some years back that one sponsor was declined because it conflicted with an official partner of the HAL?
