2 years, with an option for another 1 year. That is a longer than the 1+1 I would have expected.

When Carle left they said he would be back next season, so wonder how they will fit him under the cap

also interesting that he took Carle's number.

I can see Carle not coming back tbh

I've seen tweets from people that Sydney FC games are going to be shown on SKY TV in Italy. Not sure of the source though.

I think we should think of something witty to put on my banner in Round one.

Romanes eunt domus?

NB: Has been done by Bayern Munich against AS Roma http://pythonline.com/media/and-now-something-completely-silly-%E2%80%93-uefa-bans-python-joke

As happy as I am that Del Piero is going to be playing in the A-League, I can guarantee you he would not get the joke.

For starters, he barely went to school - like most other Italian Serie A players - so he has no understanding whatsoever of Latin. Secondly, I have had the pleasure of listening to many an interview with him growing up and he can barely string a sentence or two together in Italian, so it would have to be something short, snappy, and easily understood.

I'm surely the most fluent Italian speaker on this forum - so am very happy to lend a hand to write a banner..

just hit me up.

Cheers

Well I'm going official on this and stating that this is an amazing signing.  He will be a brilliant player in this league.

You're just saying that because this signing shows there's still hope for you of picking up a contract in the A-league.

Good use of Google translate there News!

I actually can't wait to see him play - he will do so well for them. All those who think he is too old will be proven wrong!

I'm hoping for a wet, windy, miserable Wellington day to welcome him to the A-League though.

Actually not Google.  I know the term Perdenti and it's use in conjunction with Inter so logic said Perdente must be the singular.

Very good, News. I know many people who studied Italian for years who would still get the singular of Perdenti wrong!

Anyway, can we hijiack this thread and turn it into "let's think of a cool banner for AdP" thread?

Any good ideas?

If they sign Jason Culina (and he remains fit) Sydney FC should go well this season. Have they got a decent GK yet?

Just had a discussion re: Del Pear O on ESPN Presspass, all 4 of them wrote his chances off from having any real impact on the league. "wow factor will settle after first couple of weeks", "away fans wont care the second time around", "Beckham was 32 when moved to MLS, but Del Piero is too old" - were amoung the main points raised.

Steve Nicol said he was personally approached by Del Piero's agents 5 years ago about moving to the MLS when he was with New England, and they "thought about it... for about a second" before saying no.

I think Bling will have an "aura" about it this season.

(NZP - how do you say "disgusted" in Italian?)

10 things about Del Piero

1. As a child, Del Piero's mother wanted him to play goalkeeper because he wouldn't have to run, sweat or get hurt.

2. In February this year an Italian news agency reported a 12-year-old girl woke from a two-week coma after listening to a video message from her hero, Alessandro Del Piero.

3. Del Piero was named in the FIFA 100, a list of the 125 greatest living footballers selected by Pele as a part of FIFA's centenary celebrations.

4. He is a global brand and has his own logo.

5. He is famous for post-goal celebrations where he runs around with his tongue hanging out.

6. Del Piero is known for scoring improbable goals by flicking the ball backwards off his heel.

7. The goal that made him a household name - in 1994 against Fiorentina - is a YouTube hit and still regarded as one of the best of all time.

8. Top all-time goal scorer for Juventus.

9. Has won almost every major tournament including the World Cup, Serie A and Champions League.

10. Close friend of Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher.

I can see what you're trying to do there.

That's very funny but I don't think he would get it. We don't tend to say Who are Ya the same way anglosaxons football fans do.

I was thinking something like: "Benvenuto, pippone" (Welcome, you big dud).

"Solo la nebbia" (understand: you have, only fog --> a popular chant used against the Northern teams in Italy, mainly Miland and Turin where the weather is pretty crap most of the time...)

Let's get hold of an old Fiat and burn it on the concourse.

Better still, we'll drive it through the gates, do a few doughnuts on the pitch, and then burn it.

Will move this to the dangerous liasons thread for any further discussion, but Del Piero FC are playing the Phoenix in Sydney on the same weekend as Big Day Out. Sounds like a goer to me.

I'm not sure the first game v the Phoenix is going to see a heck of a lot more bums on seats.  Maybe I'm cynical but everytime the Nix put out a press release last season about ticket sales going well our crowds didn't exceed 16k.    Marketing has got go up several notches or just start (that's for another thread).

It's understood Sydney FC's kit manufacturer adidas is preparing to sell a minimum 30,000 Del Piero shirts worldwide this season  compared with its annual 4000 Sky Blues shirts sales.

Memberships are heading towards all-time records as Webjet's major sponsorship - brokered before Del Piero's signing  is now worth more than $1 million a season.

Del Piero's Japanese fan club's 500,000 supporters are also talking about chartering flights to watch the Italian in Australia and Italy's sports TV giant Sky Italia is planning to beam Sydney FC's A-League matches into Italian lounge rooms.

So what hasn't been reported is the ADP has a option for a 2 year extension to his contract. And he is the one that can activate it.

That is fucked up.

Sydney lost 5-1 to the Roar today. they have been having injury issues, so I don't think it would have been their full strength team.

I watched the video conference via facebook link on my iphone yesterday.

I was really impressed with ADP's English. Despite having played for Juventus for nearly 20 years, he is a really nice guy. He can only be good for the A-League. I hope he puts on a few top-notch performances for Shytney starting from week 2.

Says he was in Kiwiland for the rugby world cup- picture with Conrad Smith as a promo leading in??

18 Sep 02:09

You can see all the Oz journos froze when he replied "I've seen the RWC in NZ..I know it's not Oz, but it's close".. no one uttered a word. Golden moment..

Anyway he is a very humble guy and I have to say I can't wait to see him play.

Also quite shocked to find out that Tony P is fluent in Italian. I exchanged a few words with him over the years when he was here and never thought about asking him if he spoke Italian! good on him - that would have helped him get ADP signature somewhat.
